ALUMNI PROFILE
LARRY SPACKMAN, MBA ‘86
FORMER PRESIDENT
TRANSCANADA ENERGY LTD.
Management education has
played an important role in
Larry Spackman's career.
After a number of years
as an engineer with a
Calgary natural gas
company, Spackman
made the decision to
pursue an MBA at the
University of Calgary while working full time. He was interested
in the U of C’s very respected program that offered the flexibility
of night classes.
Spackman says, "The sacrifice of personal time was challenging,
but the things I learned had a tremendous positive impact on my
career. What I learned in the program was even more beneficial to
me than the MBA designation itself." It was while sitting in an
MBA class that Spackman decided to take the risk of leaving a
comfortable job to strike out on his own.
Shortly after that he worked with partners to found the very
successful Northridge Gas Marketing, which he ran. Northridge
was purchased by TransCanada in 1994. "The University of
Calgary MBA gave me the training and critical thinking skills to
work with partners to build and run a company. It continued to
give me the background needed for my position with
TransCanada," notes Spackman.
He has now decided to accept a far different role in life. He and
his family will be leaving Calgary for three years so he can serve as
a Mission President for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day
Saints. "This is a higher calling than anything I have done before
in my life and I will need to draw on all my past training and
experience to help me."
other international initiatives in the
Faculty, including:
