(COMPANY) Mobile Device & Driving Safety Policy
Scope
This policy about cellular phone usage applies to any mobile device that makes or receives
phone calls, leaves messages, sends text messages, surfs the Internet, or downloads and
allows for the reading of and responding to email whether the device is company-supplied or
personally owned. This policy applies to all (COMPANY) employees using mobile phones on
company business or in company controlled vehicles. The use of laptops is subject to a
separate policy.
The company supports the provision of mobile phones and devices which include mobile phone
functionality (mobile phones, Blackberries, iPhones, etc.) to employees and employees' use of
personal mobile phones used on business.
Policy
(COMPANY) is aware that employees currently use cell phones or similar devices for business
purposes while driving. Research indicates that cell phone use in an uncontrolled manner while
driving can be dangerous.
Mobile phones can only be used in vehicles when national, state or municipal laws permit this
and in accordance with the local guidelines.
We recognize that other distractions occur during driving, however curbing the use of cell
phones, while driving, is one way to minimize the risk, for our employees, of accidents. We
respect those employees who chose to turn off their mobile devices while driving to lessen
distraction.
Safety Guidance
When ever possible avoid using a mobile device while driving. Pulling off to a safe stopping
area and having the conversation is recommended
Only use the phone in low hazard driving conditions
No texting, emailing, web surfing, tweeting or key board dialling while driving (voice
activated calling is preferred)
No audio conferences while driving
Calls which become complex or heated should be terminated and continued when parked
Calls should be as concise as possible
Passenger conversations on a hand held phone must not involve the driver
Drivers using a phone while driving should inform the other party that they are driving
All calls while driving should be with hands free equipment that complies with local
guidelines.
Driving is defined as:
Any time while in control of a moving vehicle

Any time while in control of a vehicle which is stationary with its engine running for a short
period e.g. waiting at traffic lights or in traffic jams
Prohibitions
Employees are prohibited from using a cell phone or similar device, hands on while driving for
conducting company related business. This prohibition includes receiving or placing calls, text
messaging, surfing the Internet, receiving or responding to email, checking for phone
messages, or any other purpose related to your employment; the business; our customers; our
vendors; volunteer activities, meetings, or civic responsibilities performed for or attended in the
name of the company; or any other company or personally related activities not named here
while driving.
Engaging in company business using a mobile device hands on while driving a personal,
company-supplied vehicle or company controlled vehicle is prohibited. The employee is
responsible for the consequences of any breach of the law and subsequent prosecution or
penalties.
Employees who violate this policy will be subject to disciplinary actions, up to and including
employment termination.
Entitlement to Company Funded Mobile Phones
The company will decide the type of phone and tariff and the current preferred supplier will be
used.

Private use of company phones will be managed on a local territory by territory basis in line with
expense rules.
