SOUTHERN TASMANIAN OPEN WEEKEND MARCH 1&2
Welcome to weekend of wine
GRAEME
PHILLIPS
Wine
AS Tasmania’s tourism sector booms,
so too does the wine industry, with
new vineyards, cellar doors and cellar
door eateries opening and increased
vineyard visitations and investment.
Here’s an extract from a recent article
in the influential US business
magazine, Forbes, written by Cathy
Huyge titled “Why I Would Personally
Invest In Vineyards In Tasmania”.
She writes: “More than 84% of
Australia’s wine production is considered
unprofitable, or profitable only
when combined with other farming or
tourism-related activities.
“Another 9% of the time, the profit
margin is A$300 per ton or less.
“Pretty slim. Pretty harsh.
“So why is Tasmania — Australia’s
cool-climate state — on my short
mental list of wine regions where,
given the opportunity, I would personally
invest?
“Because Tasmania is practically in
a world of its own when it comes to
Australian wine. Taken as an individual
wine producing region, it is almost
100% profitable.
“Plus there are these other statistics
to consider:
Unlike other regions of Australia,
demand for Tasmanian grapes outstrips
supply.
“Land is still underpriced relative
wine
TASMANIA’S
routes
2015
Tasmanian wine industry leaders Anna Pooley and her brother Matt from
Pooley Wines at Richmond.
to other wine-producing regions in
Australia.
“All Tasmanian wine produced is
in the niche premium wine sector,
which means a price point of A$15 or
above.
“The value per litre of Tasmanian
wine exported is almost four times the
national average. The bearing area in
Tasmania is on the rise.
“ It increases by about 5% every
year on average, and is 5.7 times greater
than it was just 20 years ago. Yet viable
viticultural land in Tasmania —
over 40,000 hectares — is far from
fully occupied.
www.winetasmania.com.au
“The Weighted Average Price
(WAP) for Tasmanian pinot noir is
A$2672 per ton; WAP for pinot noir
from the Yarra Valley, in contrast, is
A$1623. WAP Tasmanian Chardonnay
is A$2564; WAP Yarra Valley
Chardonnay is A$1474.
“Tasmania is riding the wave of
sparkling wine popularity and demand
globally: over 35% of Tasmania’s
fruit was made into sparkling
wine in 2014. That’s a 10% increase
from the year before.’’
Considering that Tasmania’s first
commercial vineyard was planted
only 40 years ago, that’s not a bad
wrap.
And this Open Vineyards Weekend
is your opportunity to visit some
of our oldest and some of our newest
vineyards.
As well as tasting a wider range of
varietal wines and wine styles, ales,
stout, cider and perries than ever before.
So, with 52 big, small and pockethandkerchief-sized
establishments
opening their doors for your enjoyment,
it should be an exciting couple
of days and I encourage readers to get
out and about, sample a few wines, a
beer and cider or two, meet and chat
with the producers and have a safe
and very enjoyable weekend.
The 52 vineyards, breweries and cideries
this year are offering a wider
range of varietal wines, wine styles,
ales, stout, cider and perries than ever
before.
Plus there are new vineyards, new
cellar doors and new cellar door eateries
for your enjoyment
