groups or individuals.
Point out the simile Paulsen uses in lines 112-113 to show how
hungry Dirk is: the burger “disappeared down his throat as if a
hole had opened into the universe.” Challenge students to
identify another characteristic of Dirk or Paulsen and use an
original simile to describe it. Have students share their similes
with the class.
