courtney vowels wrote <strong>in</strong> with<br />

an excit<strong>in</strong>g update: “John garnevicus<br />

and I got married on July<br />

4, 2009, on <strong>the</strong> Garnevicus family<br />

farm <strong>in</strong> Nelson, Wis. It’s <strong>the</strong> farm<br />

John’s mom grew up on; his parents<br />

retired <strong>the</strong>re a few years ago<br />

after 40 or so years <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bronx.<br />

We happily were able to conv<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

about 60 close friends and family<br />

to make <strong>the</strong> tough trek to <strong>the</strong> middle<br />

of <strong>the</strong> country (2½ hours from<br />

<strong>the</strong> nearest airport and about a<br />

mile from <strong>the</strong> closest neighbor) and<br />

got to give a bunch of city folks <strong>the</strong><br />

full rural Wiscons<strong>in</strong> experience,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g feed<strong>in</strong>g newborn lambs<br />

at <strong>the</strong> farm next door.<br />

Also present was Ben Frisch ’10 PH,<br />

and present <strong>in</strong> spirit was rebecca<br />

Zimmerman. She was scheduled<br />

to be part of <strong>the</strong> wedd<strong>in</strong>g party, but<br />

<strong>in</strong>stead was on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side of <strong>the</strong><br />

planet welcom<strong>in</strong>g a new addition to<br />

her family: She and husband, Eric<br />

Friedman, are now busy rais<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir son, Shai, <strong>in</strong> Israel.<br />

“John and I have had a whirlw<strong>in</strong>d<br />

of a year. Just before <strong>the</strong><br />

wedd<strong>in</strong>g we bought a townhouse<br />

<strong>in</strong> our hometown of <strong>the</strong> past four<br />

years, Seattle. John teaches high<br />

school math and science at Lakeside<br />

School <strong>in</strong> Seattle, and I’m <strong>the</strong><br />

director of education at Tacoma Art<br />

Museum. I’m also on <strong>the</strong> board of<br />

our local <strong>Columbia</strong> alumni club, so<br />

we’ve gotten to meet a lot of local<br />

alums.”<br />

for her second year of law school.<br />

daniel lupo is serv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Army as a chemical specialist at<br />

Fort Carson, Colo., and is soon to<br />

be deployed to <strong>the</strong> Middle East.<br />

feature documentary, Goals for Girls:<br />

The Movie, which follows <strong>the</strong> struggle<br />

of teenage girls <strong>in</strong> a Buenos Aires<br />

shantytown who dare to play a sport<br />

off-limits to women <strong>in</strong> Argent<strong>in</strong>a:<br />

l<strong>in</strong>dsay Jurist rosner graduated<br />

from Harvard Bus<strong>in</strong>ess School<br />

and lives <strong>in</strong> Los Angeles. She<br />

works for Microsoft.<br />

avi fernandes graduated with<br />

an M.B.A. from INSEAD after hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

lived <strong>in</strong> France and S<strong>in</strong>gapore<br />

for <strong>the</strong> last 10 months. He is now<br />

decid<strong>in</strong>g on which city to make his<br />

permanent home: HK? SF? S<strong>in</strong>gapore?<br />

NYC? Only time will tell!<br />

Bethany Milton ’06 recently<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ished a two-year tour as a<br />

foreign service officer at <strong>the</strong> U.S.<br />

Consulate <strong>in</strong> Mumbai and is head<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> April to serve as<br />

an economic and consular officer at<br />

through this column, on <strong>the</strong> unfortunate<br />

pass<strong>in</strong>g of John W. Kluge ’37.<br />

His generosity toward <strong>Columbia</strong><br />

was unparalleled, and <strong>the</strong> Kluge<br />

Scholars Program that benefitted<br />

many of our friends through <strong>the</strong><br />

years is just one example of his legacy.<br />

In this season of giv<strong>in</strong>g thanks,<br />

it seems fitt<strong>in</strong>g to thank him and his<br />

family for <strong>the</strong>ir generous support of<br />

our alma mater.<br />

Hannover. It is <strong>the</strong> state repertoire<br />

<strong>the</strong>ater for <strong>the</strong> State of Hannover.<br />

Every state and big city has a state<br />

<strong>the</strong>ater <strong>in</strong> Germany.”<br />

Eric sisk<strong>in</strong>d recently published<br />

his latest novel, Moment of Clutch,<br />

which can be purchased and downloaded<br />

applications. lauren Kornreich<br />

shawn writes, “I married brett<br />

shawn. We didn’t know each o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>in</strong> college, surpris<strong>in</strong>gly, but met a<br />

few years out of college. I’m <strong>in</strong> my<br />

last year of residency <strong>in</strong> emergency<br />

medic<strong>in</strong>e at NYU/Bellevue, and<br />

Brett is a first-year associate at Wachtell,<br />

Lipton, Rosen & Katz.” luz<br />

Kirsten, and I moved <strong>in</strong> June 2009<br />

to Boston, where I took a job as a<br />

postdoctoral researcher for Daniel<br />

Nocera <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> chemistry department<br />

at MIT. I was fortunate enough<br />

to receive an NIH Fellowship for<br />

three years for my research. Kirsten<br />

found work with <strong>the</strong> John A. Volpe<br />

National Transportation Systems<br />

Center <strong>in</strong> Cambridge, where she<br />

is plann<strong>in</strong>g alternative transportation<br />

such as shuttles and trails for<br />

National Parks and federal land<br />

agencies.”<br />

Miru Kim has been “work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

full-time on my artwork and travel<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a lot. This year: April, one-month<br />

stay and a solo show <strong>in</strong> Istanbul;<br />

May, shoot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Iowa; July–August,<br />

The Founta<strong>in</strong>head Residency <strong>in</strong><br />

Miami (artist residency); September,<br />

Lodz, Poland, stay for two weeks<br />

to produce work for <strong>the</strong> Łódź Biennale;<br />

October, Uruguay for a show<br />

<strong>in</strong> Montevideo and ano<strong>the</strong>r Miami<br />

residency.”<br />

Lastly, beth priest “recently<br />

completed <strong>the</strong> Intern Development<br />

Program and passed <strong>the</strong> last of my<br />

Architecture Registration Exams<br />

to become a licensed architect. I<br />

am practic<strong>in</strong>g at DeStefano and<br />

Partners <strong>in</strong> Chicago. My husband,<br />

Gregory, and I welcomed a daughter,<br />

Mallory Eleanor Murphy, <strong>in</strong>to<br />

our family on April 5.”<br />

ryan brumberg is <strong>the</strong> Republican<br />

candidate for Congress <strong>in</strong> New<br />

York’s 14th District. Ryan graduated<br />

from Stanford Law School<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2007 and worked at McK<strong>in</strong>sey<br />

and Co. for <strong>the</strong> past several years<br />

as a management consultant. In<br />

March, he resigned <strong>in</strong> good stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to run full-time for Congress.<br />

Mat<strong>the</strong>w E<strong>in</strong>horn is his campaign<br />

manager.<br />

After three years as a litigation<br />

associate at Cahill Gordon & Re<strong>in</strong>del,<br />

sogol somekh started a judicial<br />

clerkship <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fall work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> federal courthouse <strong>in</strong> Brooklyn<br />

Heights. She is look<strong>in</strong>g forward to<br />

what should be a wonderful professional<br />

and personal experience.<br />

Congratulations to arielle fenigste<strong>in</strong><br />

and Yehuda cohen, who<br />

were married on August 1 <strong>in</strong> L.A.<br />

Yehuda writes, “We knew each o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g college but were not really<br />

friends; we reconnected while liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton Heights dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

past two years. Arielle is an English<br />

teacher at SAR H.S. <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bronx.<br />
