latoya tavernier recently<br />
moved from Atlanta to Santa Barbara,<br />
Calif., to beg<strong>in</strong> a dissertation<br />
fellowship <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> black studies<br />
department at UC Santa Barbara.<br />
She’s excited about complet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
last year <strong>in</strong> her Ph.D. program.<br />
Yan feng cont<strong>in</strong>ues his work as<br />
a religion correspondent for The<br />
Straits Times <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore. He will<br />
spend this fall shuttl<strong>in</strong>g between<br />
New York, Denver, D.C. and Doha,<br />

<strong>Columbia</strong>n” plans to “major <strong>in</strong><br />

Center for Health Policy Research<br />
as part of my work toward a master<br />
of public health degree at Boston<br />
University. We’re excited to spend<br />
time <strong>in</strong> Jerusalem and also use it as<br />
a launch<strong>in</strong>g pad for some <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

about go<strong>in</strong>g to Italy, Greece, Norway,<br />
Sweden, Egypt and Jordan dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

also got engaged <strong>in</strong> a hot air balloon<br />

’07 SW. He is enrolled <strong>in</strong> a four-year<br />
J.D./L.L.M. program <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
human rights at Northwestern.<br />
lizet lopez writes: “I f<strong>in</strong>ished my<br />
M.B.A. at Kellogg School of Man-<br />
agement (Northwestern) <strong>in</strong> June<br />
and celebrated with a trip to see <strong>the</strong><br />
World Cup <strong>in</strong> South Africa (jo<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
by charlotte Jacobs). We spent three<br />
weeks <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country and went to<br />
two games, quarter-f<strong>in</strong>al match of<br />
Argent<strong>in</strong>a and Germany <strong>in</strong> Capetown<br />
and third place match between<br />
Germany and Uruguay <strong>in</strong> Port<br />
Elizabeth. We also survived a threeday<br />
safari <strong>in</strong> Krueger, where we saw<br />
all of Africa’s ‘big five,’ and more!<br />
Now I am busy settl<strong>in</strong>g back <strong>in</strong>to my<br />
hometown, Dallas, after a n<strong>in</strong>e-year<br />
hiatus, i.e., s<strong>in</strong>ce I left for <strong>Columbia</strong>.<br />

updates from our classmates:<br />
sean duffy is tak<strong>in</strong>g a year off<br />
from medical school at Harvard to<br />
work at IDEO <strong>in</strong> San Francisco.<br />
brian wagner is an account<br />
director at an <strong>in</strong>ternational public<br />
relations firm <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C.,<br />
where his undergraduate <strong>in</strong>terest<br />
<strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese history and politics is<br />
f<strong>in</strong>ally be<strong>in</strong>g put to good use. Brian<br />
also is enter<strong>in</strong>g his second year as<br />
an officer <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Navy Reserve, and<br />
is work<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> Pentagon as of<br />
October. He reconnected with Micah<br />
spr<strong>in</strong>gut, claudia sandoval<br />
and Montse ferrer at a young<br />
alumni event <strong>in</strong> D.C. recently and<br />
hopes to rediscover more <strong>Columbia</strong>ns<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g months.<br />
Julia nagle writes, “I’m work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on my second year <strong>in</strong> a public policy<br />
master’s program <strong>in</strong> California.<br />

After eight years <strong>in</strong> New York<br />
City, ganesh betanabhatla relocated<br />
to Houston <strong>in</strong> August. He works<br />
<strong>in</strong> energy private equity at CCMP<br />
Capital and will be open<strong>in</strong>g a new<br />
office for <strong>the</strong> company. If any of you<br />
are <strong>in</strong> Houston, please reach out.<br />
holly guzman is start<strong>in</strong>g her first<br />
year at <strong>the</strong> full-time M.B.A. program<br />
of <strong>the</strong> University of Chicago Booth<br />

Sean Foster, a fellow medical school<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs our classmates are up to.<br />
CC ’07, you’re all liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> dream!<br />
nishant dixit writes <strong>in</strong> from<br />
Mumbai, India: “I recently f<strong>in</strong>ished<br />
up a project at TechnoServe with <strong>the</strong><br />
Tibetan Government <strong>in</strong> Exile. This<br />
government, created by His Hol<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
<strong>the</strong> Dalai Lama, was founded <strong>in</strong> 1959<br />
to manage <strong>the</strong> affairs of <strong>the</strong> Tibetan<br />
community <strong>in</strong> India. The project goal<br />
is to enhance livelihood opportunities<br />
for approximately 80,000 Tibetan<br />
refugees across 28 settlements. This<br />
<strong>in</strong>volves plann<strong>in</strong>g and design<strong>in</strong>g collaborative<br />
livelihood <strong>in</strong>terventions<br />
<strong>in</strong> agriculture, tourism, rural call<br />
centers, access to f<strong>in</strong>ancial services<br />
and entrepreneurship. Our project<br />
was presented to <strong>the</strong> Central Tibetan<br />
Adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>in</strong> June.<br />
“In July, I traveled to South<br />
Africa to watch <strong>the</strong> World Cup. It’s<br />
amaz<strong>in</strong>g to see how far <strong>the</strong> country<br />
has come <strong>in</strong> such a short time. I saw<br />
Ghana versus Germany with alper<br />
bahadir at Soccer City Stadium <strong>in</strong><br />
Johannesburg. I was able to meet<br />
Professor Sunil Gulati, president<br />
of <strong>the</strong> U.S. Soccer Federation, for<br />
breakfast <strong>in</strong> Johannesburg.”<br />
Many of our classmates started
