Clinical Decision-Making: Determining Severity of Child Language Impairment A diagnosis of language impairment in a child is frequently followed by another integral component of the assessment process, the determination of severity. Severity designations are often based on the magnitude of the linguistic deficit present. In addition, clinicians’ severity determinations are typically categorical in nature, with children classified as exhibiting mild, moderate or severe language impairment.
