Breck
Last February, Breck was upset in the Section 2A
final by Orono, ending the Mustangs’ five-year
state tournament run under coach Les Larson.
Larson saw it as a wake-up call to his talented — but young —
team, many of whom returned this winter. Larson knew the Mustangs
could be a strong group, and he expected them to grow into the role
this year.
Mission accomplished, as Breck returned to the X after a one-year
hiatus.
But it wasn’t easy. Delano took the Mustangs to double overtime in
the section final before junior Will Blake (12-21-33) lifted a wrister
into the net, ending the game and setting off a wild celebration for
Breck.
This year’s edition of the Mustangs is a different unit than past
state title contenders, however. Junior Chase Ellingson (25-21-46)
led the ‘Stangs in goals and points, but was one of just four players
with double-digit goals. Breck isn’t the same highpowered
offense of past years, but it is very, very
good defensively.
Led by senior goaltender Stephen Headrick
(21-7-0, 1.29, .931), the Mustangs were one of the
stingiest defensive teams in the state, only once
allowing more than three goals in a game. With nine
shutouts and eight more games with just one goal

allowed, opponents struggled to generate much offense against the
Mustangs.
With 11 state appearances and four state championships in the
past 21 years, Breck is as close to a juggernaut as you may find. Can
this year’s edition earn another state title for the western Twin Cities’
private school? With the top five leading scorers this year set to return,
it could be time for another great run at Breck.
