East Grand Forks
East Grand Forks won its first state
championship last winter, anchored by a tough
defensive corps that shut down opponents.
A year later, some of the names have changed, but the story stays
the same for the Green Wave and coach Tyler Palmiscno. Gone are a
quartet of defensemen who logged plenty of ice time last winter, but
a host of returning forwards and goaltenders Josh Weber (16-3-0,
1.51, .925) and Garrett Lieberg (7-1-0, 1.80, .920) have the Green
Wave right back at the state tournament.
East Grand Forks is still stingy defensively, even with a new group
of blueliners leading the way. The Green Wave allow just 1.67 goals
per game, paced by the pairing of seniors Nathan Peabody (2-
15-17) and Reed Hjelle (1-1-2). Hjelle talied his first career goal in
the Section 8A final against Thief River Falls, in fact, it was the gamewinner.
Much of the Green Wave’s experience is on their forward lines,
particularly the top trio of senior Dixon Bowen (25-
31-56), and juniors Tanner Tweten (19-23-42) and
Grant Loven (11-17-28). Bowen is a North Dakota
recruit who with his next point will set the all-time
single-season scoring record at EGF. He’s an explosive
forward who is responsible in all three zones. Tweten
is a strong power forward with good hands, while
Loven is a versatile player with good skills. They
Dixon Bowen
complement each other well and form a formidable top line.
But the Green Wave aren’t just a one-line team, not with seniors
Reed Corbid (11-18-29), Jace Pesch (8-17-25) and Austin
Monda (9-8-17) anchoring the second line.
The defending state champions aren’t the favorites this year,
earning the No. 3 seed behind Hermantown and Mahtomedi, but it
wouldn’t be wise to count them out.
