Mahtomedi returned 15 players from last
year’s team and parlayed that to its eighth
state appearance and first since 2010.
Of the group of returning players, six of the top eight scorers
returned for the Zephyrs this year providing key experience and depth
in clutch times. They fired off a 24-2-2 record on the season that
included wins over a pair of Class 2A tournament teams in Hill-Murray
and St. Thomas Academy.
Balance and depth are key to championship runs and coach Jeff
Poeschl believes that is a strength of his team.
“I don’t recall having as deep of a team that we have this year,” said
Poeschl. ” It is a balance of depth and work ethic that are returning
with the kind of leadership we will have with this group. It should be
fun.”
Junior Jack Becker leads his team (25-35-60) offensively and had
a monster sectional tournament amassing (3-9-11). Adding to their
depth offensively is senior Kellen Campbell (17-
23-40) junior Jack Heinsch (19-19-38), and Joe
Forciea (12-22-34) lead 10 players who have earned
20 points or more on the season.
Junior goalie Will Swanson (24-2-2, 2.24, .910)
leads team in the net and they are a club with a
considerable amount of underclassmen to the cusp
of their first ever state hockey championship.
As Poeschl stated, the pride in Mahtomedi hockey is not known
much outside of their school district, but it is alive and well inside.

“There is a tremendous amount of pride, tradition, and loyalty to the
hockey program and community in general. If you are not from here
you probably don’t know that.”
The state of hockey may very well be getting to know that in a lot
more intimate detail this state tournament weekend.
