PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
At the first regional general
meeting I attended three
years ago, Adrian Baldeo,
Chair of Tennis Toronto,
invited each club to share their successes
of the past year, and the challenges they
faced in the year ahead. It was an eye
opener; not only for me, but for the rest
of the group listening to what some
clubs had achieved, irrespective of the
size of their membership. The same was
true when clubs described the challenges
they faced in the coming year. I
later shared Adrian’s idea with the other
Regional Chairs and a number of them
now include a similar session as part of
their AGMs.
This past fall I attended five OTA
regional annual general meetings.
Those meetings allow me to meet club
Presidents on a personal level and hear
about their successes in 2008 and the
challenges they face in 2009. What follows
in a summary of my notes from
those five meetings. I have not included
everything that was discussed. I have
instead limited myself to common elements.
Beginning on a positive note, a
majority of clubs in all regions reported
an increase in both adult and junior
membership requiring, in several
instances, a need for waiting lists. In
areas where a decrease was reported,
Once players developed a feeling
of being a part of something
special, participation increased.
reasons included an economic downturn
in the region, increased unemployment,
and financial hardship. Other reasons
included aging membership, a high
yearly membership turnover, and difficulty
recruiting new members.
Clubs reporting either stable or
increased membership were proactive
in providing tennis programming that
matched the instructional needs and levels
of ability of members of all ages. Led
by enthusiastic tennis pros and volunteers
these clubs provided: free lessons
for new members, new member
orientation, junior camps, progressive
tennis, family nights,
house leagues, round robins,
inter-club leagues, a variety of
tournament structures, a fitness
program, club socials, a
Pro-Am event and, in one case,
a cancer fundraiser in honour
of a deceased member.
Junior camps were by far
the most successful activity
with record numbers reported.
Several clubs also reached
out to disadvantaged youth
and either waived or obtained
sponsors to cover camp fees.
Some smaller clubs worked
together and shared pros and
programs. Clubs that focussed
on being “a people place” with
strong community connections
tended to draw more new and
casual players to the court.
Once players developed a feeling
of being a part of something
special, participation
increased.
In terms of 2009, the most
commonly reported challenge continues
to be the development of a good working
relationship with the municipal authorities
who own the land upon which most
community clubs are located. While we
recognize that tennis is not the
only sport competing for local
recreational funding, a more
open and transparent process
is required. Currently, regional
associations and clubs feel as if they
have little or no input into a process that
affects them directly.
The current economic crisis will
certainly impact 2009. Job cuts and
unprecedented cost-cutting measures by
companies will translate into decreased
membership, particularly in areas hardest
hit by the economic downturn. A
recent article in The Hamilton Spectator
stated that “Canada’s economy is in a
period of deep uncertainty that is difficult
to see beyond.” Bank of Canada
Michel Lecavalier, OTA President
with James Blake at Rogers Cup
governor Mark Carney does not foresee
a rebound in the Canadian economy
until 2010, and even then, predicts that
it will be a modest one. Over the next
two years, the OTA and its member
clubs must budget carefully and manage
resources prudently.
However, in an attempt to stimulate
the economy, the federal budget
included a commitment to invest in
Canada’s recreation infrastructure. An
infrastructure funding program is being
developed that will focus on renewing
and building community sport and recreation
facilities. The initiative provides
$500 million over two years to cover the
cost of eligible projects. Details regarding
how to access these funds have not
yet been released. OTA members will be
kept informed of further developments
via the OTA’s weekly news letter.
2008 successes, there were many!
2009 will be all about challenges...
ToronTo Tennis CiTy in 2009
Toronto Tennis City in 2009
Bill Cowan
This spring, two of Canada’s top tennis
schools will start cooperating by offering
a six month junior tennis program
at Toronto Tennis City.
Bill Cowan from Player’s Edge Tennis,
which operates out of the Rexall Centre,
and Pierre Lamarche from ACE Tennis,
which is based at the Cedar Springs
Club in Burlington, announced that
they will join forces this summer. Pierre
added: ” It’s our dream to offer the best
training opportunities for Ontario junior
tennis players.”
Cowan and Lamarche will both act as
directors of Toronto Tennis City,
which will offer a wide range of
junior coaching, training and
competitive programs: “I have
known Pierre since my playing
days and this is a great opportunity
for us to work together.”
Commented Cowan.
Two other renowned tennis
coaches will join them in the High
Performance area: Andrew Sznajder,
one of Canada’s all time great players
and Tennis Canada former Coach of the
Year, Ben Armstrong. Edward
Punzalan, will be responsible
for the Progressive Tennis area
and Vadim Burobin, fitness
coordinator will round out the
full time coaching staff.
Programs offered will
include a Spring and Fall tennis
Academy for High Performance
and Grassroots development. In the
summer a High Performance
Camp will operate with special
sessions for players preparing
for the Summer Provincials
and Summer Nationals. A new
Tennis & Sport Camp will offer
coaching in progressive tennis
as well as badminton, table
tennis and soccer, sports which
Pierre Lamarche
provide complementary skills development.
A wide range of Ontario Tennis
Association sanctioned tournaments,
including the Super Series
Classic, the Dunlop Rookie
Circuit, the City of Toronto
Championships and selection
events will be held at
the 11 court facility located
at Leslie and Steeles. Toronto
Tennis City is located on the
grounds of Adventure Valley,
a very successful summer day camp
operated by Lynda Fishman and her
family.
Two of the graduates from Player’s
Edge and ACE Tennis, Katy Shulaeva
and Peter Polansky, Canada’s Federation
and Davis Cup Team members respectively,
will be the touring Pros for
Toronto Tennis City, which will open on
April 28th, 2009.

COAChING
Coaching Certificaton System update
A s a result of the recent upgrades
to the coaching certification system
(streaming now offered after the Club
Pro 1 certification level, a strong focus
on progressive tennis to aid in proper
player development, etc.), it was felt the
timing was great to bring everyone up to
speed in this crucial development area.
Just to clarify, Tennis Canada (TC)
is responsible for the course content
at all certification levels. Ari Novick
(Director, Coaching Development at
TC) has this responsibility.
Provincially, the Head and Course
Facilitators work closely in conjunction
with their Provincial Tennis Association
and are responsible for delivering the
coaching certification program and
providing other professional development
opportunities such as the progressive
tennis seminars and recertification
courses.
In Ontario, David Phillips is the Head
Course Facilitator. Our team of Course
Facilitators (CF’s) includes Simon
Bartram and other Course Facilitators,
who are profiled on pages 12 and 13.Our
team is the finest in the country and all
work very hard to provide our future
coaches with the framework to help us
produce better players capable of ultimately
winning on the world stage!
HOW DOES THE CERTIFICATION
SYSTEM WORK?
----------------------------------
Upon completion of the first two levels
of certification, the Instructor level and
Club Professional 1 level, an individual
will have the choice of two streams of
certification. They can choose the "high
performance stream" or" club professional
stream". Both are recognized
as official certification, however the
streams represent different skill sets.
The chart opposite explains the 2
stream approach:
What is Progressive Tennis?
----------------------------------
Progressive tennis is a program for 5-9
year olds which allows young players to
learn and play the game more quickly,
efficiently and successfully. This concept
is presented in our Tennis Instructor
courses.
It uses a systematic progression of
court sizes, balls and racquets to scale
the game down to an appropriate level
for these players. It is imported from
European countries such as France and
Belgium where it was used to successfully
develop players like Justine Henin
and Olivier Rochus.
The OTA carries a number of products
used in the teaching of progressive
tennis such as racquets, mini tennis
nets, foam balls, etc. Please contact Ely
Schwartz (416-514-1107/eschwartz@
tennisontario.com) at the OTA for the
order forms. For more information on
OTA programs using Progressive Tennis
see the article on pages 20 and 21.
Tennis Professionals
Association (TPA)
----------------------------------
The TPA was developed by Tennis
Canada in 2004. The goal of the TPA is
to educate and provide services/benefits
for tennis coaches and tennis professionals
across Canada. The TPA now has
almost 2000 members.
One of the TPA’s main objective is to
provide a communication tool through
a members’ only website. The TPA seeks
to deliver up to date information on
coaching related material as well as a
variety of benefits including:
• $2 million liability insurance
• Preferred pricing on educational
resources
• Jobfind
• On-line store
• Discounts on tennis equipment and
products
Specific benefit, partners and programming
information can be found by
visiting the TPA website, located inside
Tennis Canada’s website (www.tenniscanada.com)
Is Your Club Pro’s
Certification ‘Active’?
----------------------------------
Because a coach took a certification
course several years ago does not mean
his certification is now active. Every
instructor or coach must do some form
of professional development every 2, 3
or 4 years depending on the level of certification.
To find out if a pro is active,
visit the TPA website and click on the
‘List of Certified Coaches’ link. If the
pro is not there, he/she either does not
have current Canadian certification
and/or is not a current member of the
TPA.
Where to Find Information
on Coaching Certification in
Ontario?
Please visit www.tennisontario.com.
From our home page, click on the
Coaching Development page and based
PROGRAMMING hIGhlIGhTS
In 2008 the OTA serviced more
than 200 clubs and 2200 registered
individuals through a variety of
programs organized in four areas.
PLAYER DEVELOPMENT
2008 saw huge growth in the competitive
structure. One factor in this growth
was the introduction of progressive tennis
tournaments. More than 1145 events
were sanctioned at 327 tournament
sites. This was a 50% increase over plan.
Tournament Player Registration reached
2,252 and 1270 players participated in
Provincial Championships,.
Our players performed exceptionally
well at the national level. Team Ontario
junior players won 10 national junior
singles championship titles, including
7 of 8 outdoor national titles. Team
Ontario won gold at the Canada Games.
In 2008, 3 Certification Clinics for officials
were delivered through the OTA,
resulting in 12 new certified umpires. In
Coach Certification, 203 new instructors
were certified and 76 coaches were
upgraded to a higher level of certification.
The National Tennis Centre regrouping
program, a joint Tennis Canada OTA
program held in Toronto, also expanded
as young players from the initial under
10 and under 12 groups moved into an
under 14 program.
The 2009 plan calls for all player development
programs to sustain the 2008
volumes. In addition, the new Rogers
Ranking head to head system and an
upgraded version of the Baseline system
will be implemented in the spring.
This will include the integration of the
provincial and national tournament
schedules.
MEMBERSHIP &
REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The Club Insurance program remains
the most valued and used program
the OTA run for clubs. 132 clubs used
liability insurance and 74 clubs used the
Directors and Officers insurance.
64 Tennis fairs were delivered with a
total of 1392 participants. 788 members
attended Merchant of Tennis OTA
member appreciation day at 2 locations.
The Progressive Floor Tennis and Give
Tennis a Shot programs, which deliver
introductory programs to schoolchildren,
saw huge participation increases,
more than 3 times and 2 times the numbers
planned respectively. 24 inner city
schools started the Progressive Floor
Tennis program. 342 teachers were
trained to deliver the program resulting
in 39,360 children participating in the
program, while the Give Tennis A Shot
cardio tennis program was introduced
to 27,813 children and 195 teachers were
certified in cardio tennis.
In addition to these programs 2009 will
see the club manual, a significant information
resource for clubs, updated and
expanded with some parts available to
clubs on line.
MARKETING & COMMUNICATION
A full 32 page Year Book was produced
as a fourth issue of Ontario Tennis
Magazine. The Tennisontario.com
web site received 44.2 million hits and
926,000 unique visits. The OTA Tennis
Matters fundraising program generated
$43,533 compared to the expected
$30,000.
FINANCE & ADMINISTRATION
The 2008 Budget called for a small
deficit (basically break even) but in fact
actual results showed a small surplus
mainly due to improvements in some
revenue categories. A break even budget
has been established for 2009.
A new 4 year strategic plan will be
presented at the association’s AGM for
approval by the Club Presidents. Club
President’s have already been given the
opportunity to review and comment on
a draft plan. This move should ensure
that the association’s priorities are
responsive to and aligned with the needs
of member clubs. The approved plan
will be published in the Spring issue of
Ontario Tennis.
Demystifying the Game of Tennis.
Tennis is a game that is inclusive
to all students and avoids the few
athletes who dominate because of ability
all of the time.
Progressive Floor Tennis is an initiative
introduced by The Ontario Tennis
Association, in partnership with Tennis
Canada, Greater Toronto Area Tennis
Academies and local tennis professional
across Ontario, to teach the game of
tennis. Since September 2006, the OTA
has worked with twenty-seven boards of
education across Ontario to introduce
the game to more than 70,000 students.
Teaching tennis to students and teachers
in the elementary and secondary
school environment has always been
difficult because the game of tennis
requires courts and specialized equipment
that is not often available to students.
Schools do not always have access
to the facilities and are unable to bear
the cost of such an activity.
Progressive Floor Tennis
gives this opportunity to
schools by creating an
innovative and exciting
experience, which
allows children to play
tennis on a gym floor
by providing the inventive
equipment needed
to play. The program is also
important as it promotes a life long way
to have students participate in healthy
daily physical activity.
Schools are required to teach racquet
sports as part of their curriculum.
Because of the costs normally associated
with tennis, teaching tennis as part
of the school curriculum was all but
impossible. In essence, the Progressive
Floor Tennis programs allows schools to
implement tennis as part of the curriculum
by decreasing cost and by instructing
teachers on how to teach the
basics of tennis. It gives both
students and teachers an
opportunity to experience
the game and promote
sport and physical activity
in Ontario schools.
“Progressive Floor
Tennis” is tennis, using
a small mobile net, sponge balls
and graduated length junior racquets.
The start age is aimed at children five
to twelve years of age, however this program
can be used with students up to
grade twelve, using existing facilities to
support the program, gym, classroom,
lunch room and outside tarmac.
By providing this program to schools,
the OTA is able to tackle the gap in tennis
programming in schools, created
because of the lack of tennis facilities,
by the in-service training of teachers in
the Progressive Floor Tennis program.
Teacher workshops linked with individual
school support has been the most
successful method of delivering this
program.
Tennis Canada and the OTA have also
been supporting the Ontario Federation
of Secondary Schools Athletic
Association Tennis Championships by
providing courts for up to 290 competitors
at the Rexall Centre at York
University. Only the winning teams
from regional competition get to come
to the Championships. Since the championships
have been held and supported
at this prestigious site, participation
has soared. Now there are more than
6,000 tennis players across Ontario
who play on High School Teams. The
growing participation in our new
National Universities and Colleges
Championships, also held at the Rexall
Centre, is also an indicator of the recent
growth of the game in Ontario school
boards.
In the fall of 2008 the Ontario Tennis
Association, supported with funding
from The Trillium Foundation,
launched its new “Cardio-Tennis” program
for schools called “Give Tennis
a Shot”. Cardio-tennis combines the
concept of cardiovascular exercise and
tennis. The Tennis Industry Association
in the USA has provided great promotional,
instructional and research for
running cardio-tennis programs in tennis
clubs and at public tennis facilities
for adults, however, they had not specifically
looked at adapting the program
for children and schools and young
players. It was necessary for the OTA
to undertake a thorough design and
piloting process to test the applicability
of cardio-tennis in the school environment.
The OTA, with the help of guidance
from Michelle Krause of Tennis
Industry Association, the parent group
for Cardio Tennis around the world, was
able to get the program approved for use
in schools.
Cardio Tennis 4 Kids
The Cardio Tennis 4 Kids schools program
offered by the Ontario Tennis
Association is modified to accommodate
children ages 6-16 years of age. The
program is designed and customized to
fit a wide variety of skill levels.
The goal of the Cardio program is
to challenge the fitness level of each
participant with tennis related games
and drills. Participants will feel they
have finished a great workout, while
being given the opportunity to improve
their tennis game or enjoy a first time
exposure to the sport. Participants can
monitor the effectiveness of their efforts
through the use of heart rate monitors
or pedometers. The program has three
sections (warm-up, cardio, and cool
down), and is designed to run for one
hour.
Depending on the available facilities,
the Cardio Tennis program can be
implemented both in a gymnasium and
on a tennis court. The indoor version is
recommended for children ages 6-12, to
a maximum of 25 participants at a time.
On a tennis court, it is recommended to
have 6-8 participants per court.
ROGERS ROOKIE TOuR GROWS uP
The popular Rogers Rookie
Tour, which has been running
in Ontario for the past
three years, is going national!
In a move which demonstrates Rogers’
commitment to the growth and promotion
of tennis in Canada, the concept of
the rookie tour has been evolved into a
new national program to bridge the gap
between introductory tennis and the
provincial junior competitive circuits
throughout Canada.
Rookie Tour events have met with a
great deal of success in Ontario, B.C.
and the Prairie and Atlantic regions.
The national Rogers
Rookie Tour program
will build on the experience
and success of these
events to reach thousands
of junior players each year
at tennis clubs and tennis
centres throughout the
country. The program is
designed to encourage
young players to continue
to develop their tennis
skills through the “compete” phase of
the tennis pathway. By providing a fun
low key introduction to competitive play
it is hoped they will view competition
positively and become lifelong players,
competitors and tennis enthusiasts.
All events in the Rogers Rookie Tour
will be non-elimination tournaments,
offering unranked youngsters a funfilled
and exciting event with multiple
opportunities to play without the fear
of being eliminated if they lose. They
provide a positive learning environment
where boys and girls up to the age of 18
can develop and display their tennis and
• Great first tournaments for new
competitors.
• Competition for players up to age
18.
• Number of matches guaranteed.
• All players receive a T-shirt,
Rogers prize and participation
certificate.
• Under 12 competitions use
Progressive Tennis (a system
which uses a progression of
court sizes, balls and racquets for
youngsters 5-12 yrs old).
• Introduces players to the
provincial competitive structure.
sportsmanship skills while competing
against a variety of opponents.
ThE ROGERS RANKING SYSTEM
The Rogers Ranking System
The Rogers Ranking System
was implemented by Tennis
Canada for junior and open
competitive players effective
January 1, 2009. It is an integrated
national and provincial ranking system.
Similar ranking systems are used by the
top tennis nations of the world including
the highly competitive nations of
Spain, France and Germany. With the
Rogers Ranking System players will be
able to compare themselves to all provincial
and national competitors. i.e. an
U12 competitor will be ranked within
the same framework as Canada's top
ranked players.
Prior to the implementation of this
system, Tennis Canada and all the
Provincial Tennis Associations used different
ranking systems and supporting
databases, which resulted in inconsistent
rankings between players on a national
and provincial basis and between categories
of competition.
The Rogers Ranking System brings
together the tournament management,
schedule integration and on line player
history capabilities of the OTA’s existing
Baseline computer system while
incorporating the head to head ranking
method which has been used successfully
for open and junior players in the
province of Quebec for roughly twenty
years. Players will continue to have the
ability to view and track their rankings
and match-by-match history details on
line. It is anticipated that using head to
head results from all designated tournaments
across Canada will improve
ranking accuracy. It is also hoped that
tournament seeding will be able to be
derived more directly from the rankings
because results of all matches in
designated events will be calibrated in
the same database regardless of the age
category of the event.
In fact the OTA is continuing to run
the ranking systems in parallel until
they can install the new
version of the Baseline system
in the Spring, which
will enable them to switch
to the head to head system.
The Tennis Canada
Ranking Committee
with oversee the Rogers
Ranking System. The
committee is comprised
of six regional provincial
staff members and
Tennis Canada's director
of national events and
manager of tennis development.
The committee
will determine which
provincial, national and
international tournaments
will be eligible for ranking
purposes and what the star
value of various classes
of events will be. The star
value system will allow for
high profile events to result in larger
point gains and losses. A table of point
gains and losses by star value is included
in Fig 1.
The Rogers Ranking System has been
run in parallel with the existing rankings
systems throughout 2008. This has
provided invaluable input to the various
national and provincial ranking committees
who were charged with the task
of setting initial point values for all players
in the system at its inception.
In order for an unranked player to
become ranked, a player must accumulate
at least one win and two losses
against players who are already ranked
over the course of 12 months. In order
for ranked players to maintain a ranking
they must play 10 matches in eligible
sanctioned events each calendar year.
Adult players who do not complete for a
year or junior players who do not compete
for nine months will be considered
inactive and lose their ranking. Results
against players that do not have an initial
ranking will be counted towards
the rankings once the unranked player
becomes ranked. The BASELINE ranking
system has a built-in feature that
automatically checks for this each time
a ranking is run. Once the unranked
player in question becomes ranked, the
result will be counted retroactively for
both players during the next ranking
period. Similarly if there is a delay in
tournament results being submitted and
enetered to the system, the system will
automatically allow for point differences
arising from timing.
Since the Rogers Rankings will be
programmed using the Baseline management
system, all results (provincial
and national) will be stored in a common
competitive database. Provincial
and national updates will be done simultaneously.
Tennis Canada currently is
scheduled to run ranking updates on
Mondays? and on a weekly basis.
All players will be included in the
26
OTA YEARBOOK / WINTER 2009

overall ranking list based on gender.
Provincial rankings and age or rating
category lists will use the same points
for each player as designated in the overall
ranking list since these othe lists will
be created by selecting eligible players
or filtering out ineligible players based
on birth year, province of residence etc.
Players may be ranked in several categories
is they have participated in events
in different categories. For instance an
“under 16” may have a ranking in the
overall list, national under 16, national
under 18, provincial open, provincial
under 16 and provincial under 18 ranking
lists.
Rankings will be categorized in several
ways to include a general overall list
based on gender. In addition
age, provincial and
event categories are available
via filters. I.e. a player
born in 1996 may be
categorized on the overall
general list as well as the
U12 category list based
on that player's year of birth and also on
the U14 category list if that player has
participated in an U14 level tournament.
Similarly, adults will be placed in categories
according to the levels of tournaments
that they've participated in.
Players are able to improve their ranking
by defeating higher ranked players.
Wins over players that have significantly
higher ranking points will significantly
improve your ranking points. Wins over
players that are ranked significantly
lower will result in slight increases to
your ranking points.
Losses to players that are ranked
considerably lower than you will result
in substantial point losses to your own
ranking points. Losses to players that
are ranked slightly lower will result in
slight decreases to your ranking points.
Wins over lower ranked players and
losses to higher ranked players do not
change your ranking points.
Since the Rogers Rankings takes all
designated national and provincial
results into account, participating in
tournaments outside of your own province
will contribute to your ranking and
your resultant provincial ranking.
Players who withdraw from a sanctioned
event after the
draw has been made
will automatically lose
20 points while their
opponent will automatically
earn 20 points
for a win by default.
Should a player default
three times in a twelve month period
they will automatically be suspended
from sanctioned tournaments for three
months. On reinstatement the player
will have 50 less ranking points as penalty
for the third default.
Players who retire from a match while
it is in progress will lose points as if they
had lost a regular match.
Errors will occur from time to time
and they may affect your ranking, the
ranking of your opponent, and the
rankings of other players. Inaccuracies
in national results should be reported
to Tennis Canada as soon as they are
observed as there is a management system
in place to effectively correct any
errors made. Under these circumstances,
rankings will be manually adjusted if
the challenge is substantiated. All errors
must be reported within a one month
timeframe of the actual event. An e-mail
will be sent to yourself and your opponent
to verify the correction once it is
complete.
Seniors will not have a head-to-head
ranking at the launch of the Rogers
Rankings in January 2009. Seniors
results will be shadowed and tested on
the Rogers Ranking System during 2009
in order to assess whether and when the
system can be used for seniors ranking.
Senior players who compete in other
adult categories (e.g., OPEN, 3.0, 4.0,
etc) will be ranked in these respective
categories.
Wheelchair competitors will not be
using the Rogers Ranking System.
Doubles results are being compiled on
the BASELINE system, but will not be
used for head-to-head ranking. Tennis
Canada will explore the possibility of
developing a separate doubles ranking
in the future.
Ranking System please check out
