Tired of all the negativity
about G. Ray Bodley
High School,
students in Mr.
Frawley’s classes
worked with local
screen printer
“Uniforms, etc.” to
create a shirt design
focusing on some of the
good things about our school. All classes
brainstormed ideas, a long list was formed
and about two dozen statements were
selected. Next came some market research,
where various combinations of positive
statements were tried out on target groups
and the final list agreed upon. Rachel
Eggleton contributed the graphics. Artist
Chuck DiBartollo, of Uniforms, etc. brought
the piece together in a color proof which
students reviewed and critiqued. A short run
of the shirts were printed and distributed
to some of the students in class who
contributed to the project. The red shirt with
white lettering stands as a reminder to us all
to “Be positive” about our school. GRB might
not be perfect but it’s still a great place to
work and learn.
How long does it take a balloon to pop?
Senior Brittany Jackson demonstrates here that it takes one five
hundredth of a second. In the top photo you see a microphone in
the foreground which uses sound to activate the flash. When the
microphone is in close proximity to the balloon, most of the balloon
is still in the picture. In the bottom photo, the microphone has been
moved back about one foot, thus taking the sound of the balloon
“popping” longer to activate the flash. The slight change in distance
results in a photo where most of the balloon is gone.
Brittany was a student in Mr. Frawley’s bell 3 Photography class,
participating in a field trip to Professor Andy Davidhazy’s Imaging and
Photographic Technology lab at RIT’s School of Photographic Arts and
Sciences. For more information visit:
Students in Mr. Frawley’s classes got to try their hand at television production last fall during a trip to the Telecommunications
Department at Cayuga Community College’s Auburn campus. Their host, Telcom Department Chair Steve Keeler had college staff
and students work with the GRB Tech Department students to actually produce parts of an actual show. Students rotated positions
between takes. 1.) Morgan Cooper is seen in her role as floor manager for the production. 2.) Senior Brittany Jackson rehearses her
part as the “on air” talent while being coached by Cayuga’s Jeff Szczesniak 3.)Mr. Frawley is seen here trying his hand as the “on air”
talent, reading the script off the teleprompter 4.) Doug Draughn operates camera one as taping gets under way
Field trips like this one connect kids to potential career choices. Mr. Frawley’s students have gone on to careers at WSYR – TV 9
– assignment desk, sound engineer at B-104 FM country radio, cameraman at WCNY – TV and sound engineer at WRVO – public
radio based at SUNY Oswego.

Images taken by Photography students end up in a variety of places such as
The Raider and the Fultonian yearbook. Few recognize however that
student work has placed in national competitions, has appeared
on local TV stations and frequently contributes to college
applications in the form of student portfolios. And
while students will likely not keep their
notebooks and research papers, they
often cherish the pictures they
make in Mr. Frawley’s
Photo classes.
Eastman House:
Technology students make the connection between
the learning that takes place in the classroom and that of
life-long learning offered by museums. Shown here are
students participating in a field trip to Eastman House – the
mansion built by KODAK founder George Eastman – later
made into a world class museum housing still photographs
and movie classics. A highlight of the trip was a gallery
exhibit showcasing images of the American railroad in
photographs from the Eastman House collection.
G. Ray Bodley seniors Shelby Acome and Katie Lachut
have been accepted to the prestigious Rochester
Institute of Technology!
Katie was accepted to the Fine Arts Photography
program for Fall 2009 entry based on her academic
potential and her motivation to benefit from the rich
academic resources available at RIT.
Shelby was more recently accepted to RIT’s Mechanical
Engineering Aerospace Program, for Fall 2009 entry.
Shelby cites her experience in the Project Lead The
Way program as influencing her to pursue her goal of
someday working for NASA.
According to their acceptance letters, RIT students
have access to some of the finest labs, technology
and computing facilities available. RIT grads are highly
sought after in the marketplace as a result of their highcaliber
qualifications and experiences.
N I E - VO I C E S
Senior Brittany Jackson participated in the field trip to
The Post-Standard last fall and ended up meeting the
Editor of the VOICES section. VOICES is a weekly feature
in The Post-Standard written BY students, ABOUT
students, FOR students. As a result of her meeting with
the Editor, Brittany went on to appear twice in VOICES
– once in a photo featuring teen health topics and later
Brittany had her own article published!
Mr. Frawley’s classes use The Post-Standard daily as
part of the Newspapers in Education (NIE) program.
Frawley calls the newspaper a living textbook – the
greatest tool out there for capturing student interest!
Any GRB student can write for VOICES.
Step one is to email VOICES Editor Chris Iven at civen@
Syracuse.com. He sends out occasional emails with
story ideas and you respond when you have something
to write about. You also get links to the VOICES blog as
well as an electronic VOICES newsletter.
Mr. Frawley’s classes will soon be following NCAA
“March Madness” by utilizing The Post-Standard’s “Slam-
Dunk Geography” program. Students have a lot of
interest in the NCAA basketball tournament and “Slam-
Dunk” gets kids to work across the curriculum in areas of
geography, math, American History, language arts and
Technology. Improving literacy is central to this unit that
truly makes learning come alive!
