Bangkok hotel supply
continues to grow
CBRE reports double-digit growth in Thai capital's inventory...
The number of hotels in
central Bangkok continued
to increase rapidly in the fi rst
half of the year.
According to the latest survey
by property consultant CBRE
Thailand, hotel supply in the Thai
capital expanded 12.1% year-onyear,
following the completion of six
new hotels in the fi rst six months
of 2013. That means there are
now 37,500 hotel rooms in central
Bangkok.
In addition, approximately 2,250
new rooms are expected to come
online in the second half of 2013,
spread across a range of market
segments, including luxury (13%),
upscale (8%), midscale (46%) and
economy (33%).
CBRE noted that "almost all"
of the new hotels are in high-rise
buildings, with the Sukhumvit area
being most popular, accounting
for 65% of the total hotel supply
and four out of six of the new hotel
openings. The Silom/Sathorn area
accounted for 21% of the total hotel
stock while the riverside area has
14% of supply.
PIA launches
Kashgar flights
Pakistan International Airlines
(PIA) has launched flights to the
ancient Chinese city of Kashgar. The
national carrier landed in the city, in
far western China, yesterday, and
will now operate the service once
a week direct from the Pakistani
capital Islamabad, using an Airbus
A310 aircraft. Kashgar, in the region
of Xinjiang, becomes PIA's second
destination in China following Beijing.

And according to James Pitchon,
Executive Director of CBRE
Research & Consulting Thailand,
the increase in supply in Bangkok
was likely to be offset by a sharp
rise in demand.
“The big challenge for hotel
owners is to raise the room rates
which have not grown significantly
for the last five years,” Pitchton
said. “[But] the second half of
2013 may finally see the growth
in visitor arrivals outpacing new
supply allowing owners to raise
rates.”
A further 4,400 additional rooms
expected to be added to central
Bangkok’s inventory the end of
2015, bringing the city's total to
almost 42,000 rooms - an 11.9%
increase on current fi gures. Click

Cambodia Airlines launch postponed
The launch of a new airline in
Cambodia has been delayed.
Philippine Airlines and Cambodia's
Royal Group had planned to jointly
form Cambodia Airlines last month,
but PAL was reported saying this
week that the creation of the new
venture had been put back until
October.
In a statement to the Philippine
Stock Exchange, PAL's Assistant
Corporate Secretary, Cecilia L

Onyx signs first
Ozo hotel in
Malaysia
Ozo Penang will
open in 2016
Onyx Hospitality Group has signed
its first Ozo-branded hotel in
Malaysia. The new Ozo Penang
midscale hotel is expected to open its
doors in the centre of Georgetown in
2016. It will offer 132 guest rooms, plus
meetings rooms, an 'O2Go' snack bar,
restaurant and fitness centre.
"Our entry into Malaysia with
Ozo Penang marks a key step in our
development for the OZO brand, and
indeed the overall ONYX expansion,"
said Onyx's President & CEO,
Peter Henley. "As a Thai company
we are excited to be launching our
first property in Malaysia, our direct
neighbour. We acknowledge the
importance of expansion within the
AEC region and we look forward to
developing further ONYX branded
projects in Malaysia in the very near
future," he added.
Onyx opened its first Ozo property
opened in Hong Kong in May 2013,
and has firm plans to bring the concept
