An Exciting Opportunity<br />

<strong>Regional</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong> along with the University of Nebraska<br />

<strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>, College of <strong>Nursing</strong>-<strong>West</strong> Nebraska Division, would like<br />

to offer you an exciting opportunity to become a part of our Summer<br />

<strong>Internship</strong> <strong>Program</strong>. The program allows senior RN students the opportunity<br />

to work side by side with an assigned preceptor (an experienced<br />

registered nurse), to apply learned theory and perform interventions<br />

based upon the nursing process.<br />

The <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong><br />

<strong>Regional</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>, a 189 bed acute care hospital accredited<br />

by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations,<br />

is the site for the internships. <strong>Internship</strong>s in smaller outlying hospitals<br />

are also available. <strong>Regional</strong> <strong>West</strong>, one of 137 medical centers in the<br />

United States to be designated by the Federal<br />

Government as a rural referral center, serves<br />

Nebraska and the neighboring states of Colorado,<br />

Wyoming and South Dakota.<br />

The Area<br />

Scottsbluff, located in the scenic panhandle<br />

of Nebraska, features the Oregon<br />

Trail, Scottsbluff National Monument<br />

and many other historical sites.<br />

Educational opportunities are offered<br />

from the University of Nebraska <strong>Medical</strong><br />

<strong>Center</strong>, Chadron State College and our<br />

local <strong>West</strong>ern Nebraska Community<br />

College. <strong>West</strong> Nebraska Arts <strong>Center</strong> offers<br />

our community many cultural amenities.<br />

The <strong>Program</strong><br />

The <strong>Student</strong> Nurse <strong>Internship</strong><br />

program consists of a ten week,<br />

full-time paid nursing position<br />

from early June until early August.<br />

Interns will work on a one-to-one<br />

basis with a preceptor registered nurse<br />

in a preferred clinical area, along with<br />

scheduled classroom time.<br />

Academic Credit<br />

Interns must register for three (3) credit hours with the University of<br />

Nebraska <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>, College of <strong>Nursing</strong>-<strong>West</strong> Nebraska Division.<br />

Tuition reimbursement, equivalent to in-state tuition, will be based upon<br />

successful completion of the intern program and paid directly to the<br />

University of Nebraska <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>.<br />

Cardiac Cath Lab<br />

Critical Care<br />

Emergency Department<br />

Endoscopy Lab<br />

<strong>Medical</strong>/Oncology<br />

NICU<br />

Obstetrics/Labor and Delivery<br />

Operating Room<br />

Orthopedics/Neurology/Neurosurgery<br />

Outpatient Surgery<br />

PACU<br />

Pediatrics<br />

Restorative Care Unit<br />

Eligibility<br />

The program is designed for senior level RN students. The program<br />

provides the intern with the opportunity to expand experiences with<br />

communication and team development, critical thinking and clinical<br />

decision making skills, organizational and prioritization skills and<br />

increased competency with nursing procedures.<br />

This year’s internship program begins Monday, June 9 and concludes<br />

Friday, August 15. Applications must be received by April 4, 2003.<br />
