our people [A] Members of the RescareNZ Village complete their ‘day in the life’ experience on TE MANA with a final parade and the presentation of caps by the Commanding Officer CDR David Toms and Executive Officer LT CDR Chris Fleck. One of the prizes from the Ben Revell auction (see NT165) was a five-hour working party from TE MANA. DCN won this prize, and then donated it to a charity called RescareNZ, who look after mentally and physically disabled adults. They had a wonderful day on TEM, including RHIB rides, ship tours, lunch, parade training and the final presentation of caps donated by Defence Communications Group. [B] Five Navy triathletes have been selected to represent New Zealand at the Triathlon World Championships being held in Auckland in October this year. It is a great achievement, with an outstanding commitment shown to complete the training, particularly by those on sea-going ships. Clockwise from top: LT Casey MacMillan, OCSS Adam Howie, LSA James Carroll-McLeod, SLT Piers Routledge, LMT Oliver McChesney, LET Bryce Fergusson, LSCS Shane Herewini. Over the period 26-31 March this year, the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer Foundation held their annual Shave For A Cure event across the country. This year members of HMNZS WELLINGTON's Ship's Company participated in the event and seven of the crew shaved their hair for the cause. Fundraising organiser LT Casey MacMillan, the XO of WELLINGTON, was proud of the Ship's Company’s efforts to raise money for the charity. "Just from sponsorship for the seven of us to shave our heads, and a BBQ for our supporters, the Ship managed to raise over $400, which will be gratefully received by the Foundation." LT MacMillan also managed to personally raise over $900 for the cause in individual sponsorship which will all be used by the Foundation to provide support to people afflicted with leukaemia or similar blood cancers and their families, through what can be terrifying, difficult and not always successful treatment. Ten thousand people in NZ have leukaemia and about six people get diagnosed with it every day. It can strike anyone, including the very young, with the most recent public case being that of rugby great Jock Hobbs who passed away in March at the age of 52. This year over 2500 people around New Zealand shaved their hair in order to get sponsorship and donations for this great cause, including the entire Chiefs Super 15 team and some members of Parliament. Those from HMNZS WELLINGTON who shaved their heads are now hoping for some warmer weather!
