Alumnus profile: Jim Langolf
SC4 prepares entrepreneur
to run successful business
Even as a young man, Jim Langolf
knew he wanted to own a business
someday.
But after graduating from Port Huron
High School in 1980, he wasn’t sure of his
next move. A trumpet player in the high
school band, he spent much of his time
playing music and considered himself just
an average student.
It was at St. Clair County Community
College that he learned he could follow his
passions and still succeed academically.
In his first semester, he earned a 4.0 grade
point average.
“That semester really awakened me,”
said Langolf, who lives in Port Huron
Township. “It was like a light bulb went
on.”
He continued to succeed during the
remainder of his time at SC4. He also
followed his love for music into the SC4 Jazz
Band.
While attending SC4, he worked part time
at the local jewelry store where his father,
Alex, worked. That job turned out to be more
than just a way to earn extra money. The
skills he learned there would help him realize
his goal. Years later, Langolf and his father
would go into business together and open
Alexander Fine Jewelers.
After graduating from SC4, Langolf
transferred to Anderson University in Indiana
and studied history and music performance,
graduating with honors.
He credits SC4 with preparing him to
succeed. “For me to go away to a four-year
SC4 alumnus Jim Langolf, owner of Alexander Fine
Jewelers, helps Rosa Berry look at a ring in his Fort
Gratiot store.
college right after high school would have been
a disaster,” he said. “After SC4, I was much
more prepared.”
Langolf returned to Port Huron after college
and took a job doing software support for a
local company. “That taught me a lot about
customer service,” he said. “I learned how
to make friends with people no matter how
frustrated they were.”
He also took one more class at SC4. His
wife, Dawn, was taking accounting and wanted
company. Like his job at the jewelry store, that
class would prove to be more valuable than he
realized.
“I literally have used what I learned in that
class every day of my life for the last 20 years.”
In 1993, he and his father decided it was time
Message from the
alumni president
In our communities the need for higher
education and retraining our work force
never has been more urgent and necessary.
With the support of
the SC4 Foundation
and SC4 Alumni
Association,
our college has
accomplished
much to meet these
demands.
Over the years,
Marshall J. Campbell
together with the
SC4 Board of
Trustees, the SC4 Foundation and SC4
Alumni Association have raised more
than $5 million for scholarships and
needed funds to enhance a quality learning
environment. The need continues and never
has been greater. Through the generosity of
people and businesses in our communities
and people who once benefited from the
SC4 experience, we can continue to help
so many more seeking to advance their
education and improve their quality of life.
This year, SC4 will celebrate its 90th
anniversary. The tradition of quality higher
education began nine decades ago as Port
Huron Junior College and continues today.
Imagine in those 90 years how many lives
have been touched and opportunities created
for so many people who walked the halls
of our college. Our parents, our children,
our friends and neighbors all have benefited
from SC4. Today, SC4 has more than
18,000 alumni association members.
As we reflect on what SC4 means to each
of us, it gives us cause to be proud. Join
us in celebrating 90 years of history and
tradition. Page 3 outlines events planned.
Message from the
college president
This year, SC4 is celebrating our
90th anniversary. That’s nine decades
of educating families in the Blue Water
Area. To celebrate, we will incorporate the
anniversary as part of events for alumni,
students, faculty, staff and the community
throughout 2013. (See Page 3 for details.)
We are proud of our long tradition of
excellence and our
recent successes.
Our library has
made numerous
changes to become
the most modern
and accessible
research center
possible. The
library’s collection
is more than four
Dr. Kevin A. Pollock
times the size it
was a year ago
and includes a
large number of digital resources for easeof-access
to materials. The library also has
implemented the most advanced research
engine available. Students can search
the library, the web and hundreds of free
databases in one easy search and can access
millions of resources.
SC4’s associate degree nursing program
earned accreditation in September after a
two-year process.
And a new entrepreneurship class was
introduced this winter semester. The
comprehensive class, which filled to
capacity, teaches students how to take
a business idea from early stages to
implementation.
SC4 has been awarded several grants.
A Greenforce Initiative Innovation
Mini Grant helped produce three videos
showcasing how SC4 uses its green
technology to educate students. Watch the
videos at www.sc4.edu/livinglabs.
We received two grants from Michigan
Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.
The first, through MCACA and the
Michigan Humanities Council, helped
to support two free performances of
traditional African dance and music by the
Biakuye Percussion Group in February.
The second, through MCACA’s
Minigrant program, administered by the
Anton Art Center in Mount Clemens, will
help bring two award-winning authors
to campus in April to celebrate the 55th
edition of Patterns, the college’s literary
and arts publication of student work.
In athletics, the Port Huron Sports Hall of
Fame opened in its new location in SC4’s
North Building in January.
These are just some of the highlights of
what your community college is doing as
we celebrate our past and continue to look
to the future.
us opening our own jewelry store.
We went for it.”
The jewelry store, which moved
to a new location in Fort Gratiot
three years ago, is celebrating its
his children.
He and his wife are co-presidents
of the Port Huron High School
Band Boosters. Their son Jeffrey,
an 11th-grader, is a drum major.
Langolf and his business are
proud to support the SC4 Alumni
Association and give back to the
Langolf still makes time for music, which
is a tradition for his family. He met his wife
in high school band and he currently plays
trumpet at Colonial Woods Church. His
mother, father and two of his siblings played
school that gave him his start. “I am proud
to have an associate degree from SC4 on
my resume,” he said. “SC4 gives a lot of
families educational options that they wouldn’t
otherwise have.”
Leaders, bank help campaign to grow
With two of five capital projects
complete and more than $636,000
raised for scholarships, SC4’s
two-year, $1 million fundraising
campaign has surpassed its overall
monetary goal and is focusing
fundraising on the final three
projects.
As of Feb. 18, the SC4 and
SC4 Foundation’s “All Aboard:
Campaign for Talent, Technology
