SC4 • SC4 Alumni Association • SC4 Foundation SC4’s 10th annual Potters Market ran Nov. 15 through 18 and featured hand and pottery wheel pieces created by students, faculty and guest potters. The event featured a musical and dramatic celebration of King’s legacy with a diverse variety of musicians, musical styles, dramatic performances and dance. The festivities were sponsored by the SC4 Global Diversity Advisory Council, Port Huron branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Times Herald. The delegation, organized by architectural firm SHW Group, toured the Port Huron campus to study how SC4 has incorporated environmental sustainability into numerous construction projects. The event, presented by the SC4 Alumni Association and SC4 Athletic Department, raised more than $3,000 for athletic scholarships. The first performance was part of the college’s Thursday at Noon Concert Series. The second performance was presented by SC4’s Global Diversity Advisory Council. The concerts were funded in part by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Michigan Humanities Council. A total of 331 people attended the Nov. 3 SC4 Foundation Red Carpet Affair, which raised $42,577 to benefit scholarships and capital projects at SC4. The theme was “Cirque du Soleil on the Red Carpet,” featuring an extravaganza of performers. Of the total raised, $5,670 went toward visual and performing arts student scholarships and $36,907 went toward expansion of the college’s Natural Science Museum. This year’s Red Carpet Affair will be Saturday, Nov. 2. Visitors check out the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame during its grand opening Jan. 26. The event celebrated the hall of fame’s new location on SC4’s campus. The hall is on the lower level of SC4’s North Building. Leaders, bank help campaign to grow With two of five capital projects complete and more than $636,000 raised for scholarships, SC4’s two-year, $1 million fundraising campaign has surpassed its overall monetary goal and is focusing fundraising on the final three projects. As of Feb. 18, the SC4 and SC4 Foundation’s “All Aboard: Campaign for Talent, Technology and Tomorrow” had raised $1,112,519.23. The campaign launched Nov. 1, 2011. The campaign benefitted from generous donations, including donations for scholarships from alumnus and local businessman Gene Oldford and dermatologist Dr. S.L. Husain Hamzavi, and a donation from Fifth Third Bank for a Campus Innovation Center, which opened in January. The first capital project, SC4’s Greenway, was completed in fall 2012. Fundraising continues for the three remaining capital projects. Expanding SC4’s Natural Science Museum will serve as a springboard to peak the interests of students of all ages in science and future careers. Renovating Room 312 in SC4’s Main Building will reveal the room’s historic architectural details and create a state-of-the-art classroom for teaching and learning. And a campus sign project will add, improve and replace worn building signs and way-finding signs, and provide educational signs for selfdirected tours about campus green features. Fifth Third donates $50,000 A ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 18 celebrated the opening of the new Fifth Third Bank Campus Innovation Center. Located on the first floor of SC4’s Clara E. Mackenzie Building (in the area formerly known as the Memorial Room), the center provides a designated area to explore and plan implementation of innovative ideas to move the college’s mission forward. It includes technology tools for collaboration, flexible seating and tables for small or large group opportunities, 6 and an area for visiting groups to use for discussions. At $50,000, Fifth Third is the largest corporate donor to the campaign to date. “As a corporate citizen of St. Clair County, Fifth Third Bank was proud to support St. Clair County Community College with a grant for the Fifth Third Bank Campus Innovation Center,” said David F. Girodat, president and CEO of Fifth Third Bank, Eastern Michigan. “Fifth Third is known as the ‘Curious Bank,’ and innovation, based on listening to our customers, is part of our DNA.” Oldford donates $500,000 Oldford’s pledge of $500,000 for scholarships was a surprise announcement at the SC4 Foundation’s Red Carpet Affair on Nov. 3. His donation, the largest individual contribution to the campaign to date, will establish the Stephen E. and Clara B. Oldford Scholarship Endowment Fund, named in memory of his parents. The SC4 Foundation will receive Gene Oldford the pledge over the next five years. Each year, beginning in 2013-14, the interest from the endowment will provide scholarships to SC4 students. Oldford of St. Clair Township said he’s making the donation to help the people of the St. Clair County-Sanilac County area. “I can help some kids who otherwise couldn’t go to college and also provide assistance to those who can go,” he said. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must have graduated from a high school in St. Clair or Sanilac counties with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better and submit an essay. Scholarships may be renewed if the student maintains a 2.5 or better grade point average. Oldford has played a successful role in numerous businesses in the Thumb. They include what was then Huron Tool & Manufacturing in Sanilac County’s Worth Township; Black River Manufacturing and the former Black River Plastics, both in Port Huron; Oldford & Associates in Port Huron; and a pulley company and a painting company, both in Tuscola County’s Vassar. Hamzavi creates scholarship The SC4 Foundation’s Hamzavi Foundation Endowment Scholarship Fund annually will award a scholarship to an SC4 student. The scholarship is made possible by a $30,000 pledge by Hamzavi of Port Huron and a $15,000 matching gift from the Community Foundation of St. Clair County. Hamzavi is a founding member of Hamzavi Dermatology in Fort Gratiot, Clinton Township and Canton. He also is a professor of dermatology at Wayne State University and a staff member of several hospitals, including Port Huron Dr. S.L. Husain Hamzavi Hospital and St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron. He is a member of SC4’s Alumni Association Board and Global Diversity Advisory Council. Beginning with the 2013-14 academic year, the scholarship will be awarded annually to a student pursuing a career in an allied health field at SC4, with first preference given to students in a medical assistant program. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Scholarship amounts will vary. Scholarship recipients also will qualify for the opportunity to be interviewed by Hamzavi Dermatology for a potential job opportunity.
