2 Message from the college president This year, SC4 is celebrating our 90th anniversary. That’s nine decades of educating families in the Blue Water Area. To celebrate, we will incorporate the anniversary as part of events for alumni, students, faculty, staff and the community throughout 2013. (See Page 3 for details.) We are proud of our long tradition of excellence and our recent successes. Our library has made numerous changes to become the most modern and accessible research center possible. The library’s collection is more than four Dr. Kevin A. Pollock times the size it was a year ago and includes a large number of digital resources for easeof-access to materials. The library also has implemented the most advanced research engine available. Students can search the library, the web and hundreds of free databases in one easy search and can access millions of resources. SC4’s associate degree nursing program earned accreditation in September after a two-year process. And a new entrepreneurship class was introduced this winter semester. The comprehensive class, which filled to capacity, teaches students how to take a business idea from early stages to implementation. SC4 has been awarded several grants. A Greenforce Initiative Innovation Mini Grant helped produce three videos showcasing how SC4 uses its green technology to educate students. Watch the videos at www.sc4.edu/livinglabs. We received two grants from Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. The first, through MCACA and the Michigan Humanities Council, helped to support two free performances of traditional African dance and music by the Biakuye Percussion Group in February. The second, through MCACA’s Minigrant program, administered by the Anton Art Center in Mount Clemens, will help bring two award-winning authors to campus in April to celebrate the 55th edition of Patterns, the college’s literary and arts publication of student work. In athletics, the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame opened in its new location in SC4’s North Building in January. These are just some of the highlights of what your community college is doing as we celebrate our past and continue to look to the future. Robert Carson recognized as Distinguished Alumnus of the Year During its annual meeting Thursday, Nov. 15, the SC4 Alumni Association named Robert W. Carson of Fort Gratiot as its Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. The event was at Quay Street Brewing Co. in Port Huron. Carson graduated from St. Clair County Community College and the University of Michigan. He went on to earn a law degree from what was then the University of Detroit Law School. Robert W. Carson He has been chair of the Alumni Golf Classic for the past 14 years. Also at the meeting, the association elected a new president, Marshall J. Campbell of Fort Gratiot, and re-elected Vice President Dan L. DeGrow of Burtchville Township and Treasurer Thomas L. Coleman of Fort Gratiot. Also at the meeting, the association elected a new board member, Rebekah J. Smith of St. He is a senior partner with Fort Gratiot law firm McIntosh, McColl, Carson and Strickler. He has been on the March of Dimes Board of Directors since 1975 and is past president of the Port Huron Golf Club in Fort Gratiot. He also volunteers with Autism Speaks in St. Clair County. He is a member and past president, as well as Scholarship Committee Clair Township. Board members re-elected were Scott J. Babin of Port Huron, Tyrone C. Burrell of Port Huron, Carson, Dr. Robert W. Coulter of Port Huron, Dr. S.L. Husain Hamzavi of Bloomfield, Nancy E. Klemmer of Burtchville Township and Thomas F. Obee of Columbus Township. They opened Alexander Fine Jewelers in downtown Port Huron. “I always envisioned the two of us opening our own jewelry store. We went for it.” The jewelry store, which moved to a new location in Fort Gratiot three years ago, is celebrating its 20th anniversary in April. “It really is a joy to help people celebrate significant moments in their lives,” he said. Jim Langolf the trumpet, and so do all three of his children. He and his wife are co-presidents of the Port Huron High School Band Boosters. Their son Jeffrey, an 11th-grader, is a drum major. They also have two daughters. Emily is in eighth grade and Kristen is studying to be a teacher at Anderson University. Langolf and his business are proud to support the SC4 Alumni Association and give back to the Langolf still makes time for music, which is a tradition for his family. He met his wife in high school band and he currently plays trumpet at Colonial Woods Church. His mother, father and two of his siblings played school that gave him his start. “I am proud to have an associate degree from SC4 on my resume,” he said. “SC4 gives a lot of families educational options that they wouldn’t otherwise have.” Alumni where they are now These updates were submitted since October 2012 by SC4 alumni. He graduated from Western Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree in recreation park and tourism administration and a minor in business marketing. Dianna (Farenger) Gill of Marine City is pursuing her master’s degree in criminal justice at Northern Michigan University while working part time as a substitute teacher. John Ogden of Port Huron retired as director of finance for the city of Port Huron. Scott Shine of St. Clair is executive director of the Arc of St. Clair County. He graduated from Central Michigan University with a bachelor of science degree in sociology with a concentration in criminal justice. Prior to working at the Arc, he worked for Blue Water Center for Independent Living.

To commemorate SC4’s 90th anniversary, students and community members created more than 90 ceramic bowls Feb. 1 to be donated to Mid City Nutrition in Port Huron for its Empty Bowls fundraiser, which benefits the soup kitchen. At the Friday, March 22, Empty Bowls event, guests will be served a simple meal and choose a bowl. Facebook timeline As part of its celebrations, SC4 developed a detailed timeline on its Facebook page. The timeline lists events large and small throughout the college’s history.
