Principal’s News
Dear Parents,
The FCAT for grades 3-5 is scheduled to begin April 16.
Now is a critical time to make sure your child is well
rested, has a good breakfast and arrives at school in plenty
of time to get set for the day. Arriving a little early on
these days will provide your student with the opportunity
to avoid rushing into class at the last minute, thus feeling
unprepared. Students need to be relaxed and ready in
order to do their best. Avoiding morning hassles is also
important. Children should get everything they need for
school ready the night before and put it near the door. It is
also helpful to set out his/her clothes the night before so
that children do not have to search for what to wear in the
morning. Being prepared can go a long way in helping
your child do his/her best.
We are confident that your child is well prepared
academically and by working together to ensure that they
are emotionally ready, we know his/her true achievement
level will be recognized.
A child’s classroom placement is one of our main
priorities! As part of our placement procedures, we
regretfully do not accept or honor specific teacher
requests. If you feel your child has specific characteristics
that fit certain types of teaching styles feel free to contact
Ms. Feinberg with that information.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Exciting News from the Media Center!!!
Many students and parents have reported that they are using our new e-Books!
This is great news because the information text about countries not only
reinforces knowledge needed for improved FCAT performance, but also
increases interest in, and knowledge about countries by the individual student and
often too, their families, who have come from these countries. Parents then have
the opportunity to share with their children how life in the United States is
similar to, or different from life in other countries creating greater cultural
understanding and appreciation. It is now possible to access the e-Books by
using the link provided on our school’s website or simply by accessing the
Internet from any computer. To access the books, go to
http://library.esebco.com. The login is: sunsetlakes (no spaces, lower case)
and the password is EAGLE (all caps.) The student must then enter his 10 digit
student ID # and name.
In media class news, our Kindergarten students are now checking out books each
week and their excitement about reading is increasing as they learn that they can
recognize, and read many of the words and stories on their own or with assistance
from their parents. Grades K-2 are excited about the Florida Reading Award
books and activities we are doing in addition to their check out time. After all 8
award books have been read students will be asked to participate in the statewide
voting for their favorite book. Third grade is learning how to use the
encyclopedia both in hard copy (book) form and online as part of the BEEP
resources provided by Broward County Schools, while fourth and fifth grades are
using the brand new 2012 World Almanac for Kids to access information on a
wide variety of topics of interest. World Almanac activities and encyclopedia
lessons also support the math, science, and social studies curriculum and the
Florida Research Process Model (FINDS.)
March 30 is the deadline for this year’s Reading Across Broward forms to be
turned in to the classroom teacher. Grades 3-5 must be reading chapter books,
nonfiction, and/or biographies, while grades K-2 read picture books, or a
combination of chapter books and picture books according to their reading levels.
Awards for their voluntary participation (and turning in the forms on time) will
be presented at end of the year awards programs. Any, and all books read for
Reading Counts may be included on RAB as well. If you have questions about
the program, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at
carole.bierwiler@browardschools.com or call me at 754-323-7665.
5 th Grade News

All fifth grade students had the opportunity to visit Glades Middle School on January 24, 25, and 26.
Students toured the school and dropped in on some classes. This was a great opportunity for students to
get a peek at the next stage in their academic career. They were able to listen to the string orchestra and
choir practice before school. Glades offers many extracurricular opportunities for their students in areas
such as sports, academics, and the arts. Former Sunset Lakes students met with our fifth graders to dispel
some of the common myths and share their experiences at Glades. It was a fabulous opportunity and we
are glad that Glades extended the invitation.
