Principal’s News
Dear Parents,
The FCAT for grades 3-5 is scheduled to begin April 16.
Now is a critical time to make sure your child is well
rested, has a good breakfast and arrives at school in plenty
of time to get set for the day. Arriving a little early on
these days will provide your student with the opportunity
to avoid rushing into class at the last minute, thus feeling
unprepared. Students need to be relaxed and ready in
order to do their best. Avoiding morning hassles is also
important. Children should get everything they need for
school ready the night before and put it near the door. It is
also helpful to set out his/her clothes the night before so
that children do not have to search for what to wear in the
morning. Being prepared can go a long way in helping
your child do his/her best.
We are confident that your child is well prepared
academically and by working together to ensure that they
are emotionally ready, we know his/her true achievement
level will be recognized.
A child’s classroom placement is one of our main
priorities! As part of our placement procedures, we
regretfully do not accept or honor specific teacher
requests. If you feel your child has specific characteristics
that fit certain types of teaching styles feel free to contact
Ms. Feinberg with that information.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Mr. Charpentier
Principal
ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL
Did You Know:
students should be completely prepared to exit
the vehicle as soon as the vehicle stops.
• For dismissal, please make sure you have a
windshield sign visible with the names of all your
children displayed on your dashboard.
• If you have siblings to pick up, the older sibling
should be seated with the younger sibling at
dismissal time.
• According to Broward County School Board
Safety Guidelines, employees should not open
the vehicle doors.

Exciting News from the Media Center!!!
Many students and parents have reported that they are using our new e-Books!
This is great news because the information text about countries not only
reinforces knowledge needed for improved FCAT performance, but also
increases interest in, and knowledge about countries by the individual student and
often too, their families, who have come from these countries. Parents then have
the opportunity to share with their children how life in the United States is
similar to, or different from life in other countries creating greater cultural
understanding and appreciation. It is now possible to access the e-Books by
using the link provided on our school’s website or simply by accessing the
Internet from any computer. To access the books, go to
http://library.esebco.com. The login is: sunsetlakes (no spaces, lower case)
and the password is EAGLE (all caps.) The student must then enter his 10 digit
student ID # and name.
In media class news, our Kindergarten students are now checking out books each
week and their excitement about reading is increasing as they learn that they can
recognize, and read many of the words and stories on their own or with assistance
from their parents. Grades K-2 are excited about the Florida Reading Award
books and activities we are doing in addition to their check out time. After all 8
award books have been read students will be asked to participate in the statewide
voting for their favorite book. Third grade is learning how to use the
encyclopedia both in hard copy (book) form and online as part of the BEEP
resources provided by Broward County Schools, while fourth and fifth grades are
using the brand new 2012 World Almanac for Kids to access information on a
wide variety of topics of interest. World Almanac activities and encyclopedia
lessons also support the math, science, and social studies curriculum and the
Florida Research Process Model (FINDS.)
March 30 is the deadline for this year’s Reading Across Broward forms to be
turned in to the classroom teacher. Grades 3-5 must be reading chapter books,
nonfiction, and/or biographies, while grades K-2 read picture books, or a
combination of chapter books and picture books according to their reading levels.
Awards for their voluntary participation (and turning in the forms on time) will
be presented at end of the year awards programs. Any, and all books read for
Reading Counts may be included on RAB as well. If you have questions about
the program, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at
Pre-K News

Pre‐K has had an exciting and adventurous last couple of months!! We were able to observe and learn about
spiders, roaches, and even chameleons on our Wacky Wild Science "Critters" field trip. We also learned how
to listen for heartbeats, check our tonsils, and bandage a friend when we went to the Teddy Bear Clinic
presented by Memorial Hospital Miramar.
In our classrooms, we got to meet and learn about Mr. O and Mr. C. Mr. O taught us all about opposites,
making patterns, and the safety rules for crossing the street. Mr. C taught us how to keep safe in the kitchen,
picking healthy foods to make us grow big and strong, and sorting/graphing. We look forward to meeting
Ms. E, Ms. Y and Mr. G!!!
Kindergarten
News
Kindergarteners had a blast in December. We culminated our Holidays around the world with Multicultural
Dolls. It was fascinating seeing how many different cultures we have right here at Sunset Lakes Elementary!
Addition and subtraction were practiced, practiced, practiced! We know the difference between the two!
Students had fun right before winter break with an Eskimo Extravaganza by working on holiday centers and
eating lots of yummy treats.
After Winter Break, the children and teachers were eager to begin a brand new year full of exciting
resolutions! Learning the forces of nature such as push and pull, and gravity were what we practiced until it
became second nature.
FAIR testing was completed during the first few weeks of January with letters, letter sounds, phonemic
awareness and comprehension being the areas focused on. The test will take place one more time before the
end of the school year.
In the near future, we will have our field trip to the Miami Children’s Museum and celebrate our 100th day
of school on February 6th.
1 st Grade News
Happy New Year 1 st grade parents! We are now at the beginning of the 3rd quarter. Our students are
learning and growing by leaps and bounds. In preparing for the second half of the school year, please make
sure that your child has all of the essentials he/she needs. Most students are in need of the following items:
crayons, pencils, glue sticks and scissors. Be aware that students must now be completely familiar with their
vocabulary words. Also, they will be tested on dictated sentences using their spelling words, so please work
on capitalization and punctuation.

We look forward to a many activities and learning opportunities during the second part of the school year.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
2 nd Grade News
We are halfway through the school year and are making great gains! Students continue to learn reading
strategies to help them become successful readers. We have learned about main idea and details, cause and
effect and plot development. Students continue to learn challenging vocabulary words daily and are
encouraged to use them not only when speaking but in their writing as well. In math we continue to work
with addition and subtraction through three digits. In Science we have learned about forces and motion,
rocks, and different types of soil. In Social Studies we learned about different holidays and are learning
about goods and services. We ask you to please continue to help us encourage your children at home and
review the skills being taught in the classroom. We thank you for your continued support and for helping
your child reach beyond the stars!

Happy New Year to all!!! We hope you had a fun filled winter break. The third graders are moving full
speed ahead practicing their reading and math skills as they continue to prepare to meet all of the
state standards this year. We recently began a unit on the Sun and Stars and the children are very
excited with the lessons and experiments taking place. Please be advised that the third grade Portfolio
Assessments will be taking place shortly and it is imperative that the students be in attendance those
days. Feel free to contact your child’s teacher for the dates or check their websites.
4 th Grade News

4 th graders completed some wonderful projects on Early Florida Indians recently and are working
towards learning more about Florida’s History in order to better understand and enjoy our trip to
St. Augustine planned for March 28‐29. We are very excited about this opportunity to see our
state’s history in real life! Additionally, our students are working hard preparing for the FCAT
Writes scheduled for the end of February. We are writing to timed expository and narrative
prompts each week to prepare for the upcoming test in which students will need to identify the
type of prompt, plan, and write their essay in 45 minutes. We look forward to great essays on
February 28 th !
5 th Grade News

All fifth grade students had the opportunity to visit Glades Middle School on January 24, 25, and 26.
Students toured the school and dropped in on some classes. This was a great opportunity for students to
get a peek at the next stage in their academic career. They were able to listen to the string orchestra and
choir practice before school. Glades offers many extracurricular opportunities for their students in areas
such as sports, academics, and the arts. Former Sunset Lakes students met with our fifth graders to dispel
some of the common myths and share their experiences at Glades. It was a fabulous opportunity and we
are glad that Glades extended the invitation.
