Principal’s News
Calendar Change and Turkey Trot
Back in September, the School Board of
Broward County made a decision to
furlough all of its employees on
November 21st and 22nd. The result of
the impending furlough is that all
schools will be closed Thanksgiving
week. The students will return on
Monday, November 28. If you have any
questions, please call the main office at
754-323-7650.
On Friday, November 18, our students
will participate in our Annual Turkey
Trot. This mile long walk around Publix
Supermarket and the Sunset Lakes
Community Center, is part of a long
standing tradition at Sunset Lakes. The
students will participate as a group and
refreshments will be available
throughout the course. This event
promotes a healthy lifestyle among
students. We look forward to another
great event!
Have a great day!
Thank you,
Know:
• To facilitate quick movement of the car line, all students should be completely prepared to exit the
vehicle as soon as the vehicle stops.
• For dismissal, please make sure you have a windshield sign visible with the names of all your children
displayed on your dashboard.
• If you have siblings to pick up, the older sibling should be seated with the younger sibling at dismissal
time.
• According to Broward County School Board Safety Guidelines, employees should not open the vehicle
doors.

Exciting News from the Media Center!!!
The media center now has e-Books for use by our
students and staff. These books are electronic versions
of books about 30 different countries. We are one of
the first schools in the county to add e-Books to our
collection and we are excited about the additional
means with which to share information with our
students. The books can be accessed and read online
either at home or at school in either an individual or a
read-aloud mode. Features on the pages allow for full-
page access, zooming in or out, thumbnail style,
turning pages, etc. We anticipate placing a link on the
Sunset Lakes website soon; however, you do not need
to wait until that is available.
To access the books, go to http://library.esebco.com.
The login is: sunsetlakes and the password is EAGLE
(all caps.) The student must then enter his 10 digit
student ID # and name. If you have questions about
this, please do not hesitate to call Ms. Bierwiler at the
school number, 754-323-7650. Let us know how you
like this new feature!!
Pre-K News
Pre-K has been learning about apples, fall/autumn, pumpkins, bats and spiders and had the opportunity to explore
some of these items. We enjoyed learning about Mr. B and sharing our Bears to our friends. Pre-K had a
wonderful time walking through the Cafeteria for the Storybook Parade. We are looking forward to the Turkey
Trot on Friday, November 18 th . We will be learning about the letters K, D, and F. In addition, we will be
discussing: being kind, helping each other, differences, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. Thank you to all our
parents who have donated and/or volunteered so far this year.

Kindergarten News
The Kindergarten students were quite the little scientists this month. We learned all about the properties of water
and what’s the matter? Well... solid, liquid and gas of course! And then to expand our knowledge of animals we
discussed all about our new friend the “bat”. Did you know that they are the only mammals that can take flight?
But that’s not all. We learned about the hairy 8 legged arachnids too. Then we visited the Fairy Tale reading genre
and chose our favorite Fairy Tale character to represent during our Fairy Tale/Storybook Fall Festival celebration.
Mathematically we are getting the foundations of addition and subtraction off to a great start. We have been
learning about more and fewer. Fire safety is very important so the neighboring firefighters with their truck
zoomed by our school and spoke to our students about the fire safety rules. And of course, in the month of October
we celebrate Hispanic Heritage and learned several farm animal names in Spanish and performed the song for our
school friends. This was just perfect since we’re soon off to visit a local farm!
1 st Grade News
Autumn is here and we are “Falling” all over our books! First Grade students are on their way to earning Red,

White, Blue and Gold stars through Reading Counts. Encourage your child to read and take a test on the computer
every week. Also, all first grade students are now going directly to building 4 instead of the cafeteria. This is a
great opportunity for them to read a book for Reading Counts.
On November 17, we will have an amazing Science experience with High Touch - High. Our budding scientists
are very excited and will be eager to tell you all about what they learned. Contact your child’s teacher for further
information.
Thank you for your continued support.
nd Grade News
We had a great time during our fall festival. The students looked amazing in their storybook character costumes.
The 2 nd grade teachers would like to thank all of the parents for their donations and all those parents who
volunteered to help make this day a success.
Second Graders continue to work hard and put forth maximum effort daily in order to achieve success. In the area
of reading, the students have been working on improving their reading skills by using various strategies when
reading. This past month we have focused on main idea and details, sequencing events in a story, as well as plot
development. Please continue to review these skills at home with your child when reading. This month we will
work on making inferences, cause and effect and author’s purpose. We also will continue to work on increasing
the student’s vocabulary to help increase their comprehension.
In math, the students continue to work on a variety of strategies to solve math problems. This month we will focus
on learning two and three digit addition with and without regrouping. We also will work on two and three digit
subtraction with and without regrouping. Please review these skills with your child at home.
We look forward to our field trip to the Miami Children’s Museum on November 29 th . You can pay for this trip
online or send in cash no later than November 15 th .
3 rd Grade News

This month the Third Graders have started collecting for the Harvest Drive. Please remember to help us provide
support to those who need it most. We are collecting the following House Supplies: paper towels, dish soap,
napkins, aluminum foil, and laundry detergent.
In our classes this quarter we have begun working on multiplication tables. The students will participate in timed
drills that are meant to provide practice and speed. The first few students to master this task will earn a reward
from his/her teacher. Please help your children practice their multiplication tables at home.

4 th Grade News

4 th Grade is working on narrative writing skills and literature based activities in class that enhance our curriculum
and making learning exciting and fun! This fall we worked on our “Teacher Creature Feature” in which we read
various books on a different type of teacher, created various projects related to our story, and teachers even dressed
up like the one from the book! In science we are learning about matter and in social studies we are soon to be
working on Early Florida Indian projects! We are soon to be heading to Billie Swamp Safari, too!
5 th Grade News

On September 17th the entire Fifth Grade class traveled to Junior Achievement World to participate in the JA
Biztown experience. The students had the opportunity to apply real-world math and reading skills as they
experienced a day in the life of a member of the JA Biztown community. Students played a variety of roles such as
mayor, DJ, attorney, banker, FPL worker, and Channel 10 news team member. The Fifth Grade Teachers would
like to thank our many volunteers for making this such a valuable learning experience for our students.
A message from your PTSA
It has been a very active year so far for your Sunset Lakes PTSA. We appreciate all the support from the
administration, the teachers, and the parent volunteers without whose help our goals could not be
achieved.
Our Spirit T-Shirts have arrived to rave reviews. Note that the T-Shirts were custom-ordered. Despite the
arrival of new students at our school and some late orders being placed, we feel every student who wanted
a Spirit T-Shirt was able to purchase one. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Special thanks go out to Mrs. Perlman, all the teachers, support staff, and the group of parent volunteers
who made Pinwheels of Peace Day a big success again this year.
The Adopt-A-Puppy fundraiser proved to be very successful. The top-seller was Kristin McLean from
Ms. Espinosa’s Kindergarten Class who was announced at the pizza party in October. We issued an
adoption certificate and a stuffed puppy to all those participants who sold 10 items or more. We would
like to thank all the parents, parent volunteers, and students for making this fundraiser successful and for
supporting our school.
Once again, our Galactic Book Fair, which was held during the week of October 17-21, was met with
excitement by students and teachers alike.
We had our first PTSA general meeting on October 19. All the SAC candidates were approved by the
members of the PTSA .
A Red Ribbon slogan contest ran from October 10-17. Mr. Charpentier and Mr. Wilson served as judges.
The winning class was Ms. Leonard’s Fifth Grade and the winning slogan, “Be Alert; Drugs Hurt”, was
displayed in the front of the school along the fence. Her class will receive an ice cream party as a reward.
We thank all students and teachers who participated in the contest.
