Opera Camp
for Kids at City
Academy
Music!Words!Opera!: A K-12 interdisciplinary academic year
program in 47 public, private and parochial schools culminating
in an original opera created and performed by students.
M!W!O! Teacher Training: A one-week teacher training course at
UMSL for implementing the M!W!O! curriculum in the classroom
presented by original authors Roger Ames and Clifford Brooks.
This year the revised, updated curriculum included the study of
Rossini’s La Cenerentola.
Opera Camp for Kids: A one-week session during opera
season offering workshops in singing, acting, and dance and
performances of the American premiere of Peter Ash's The
Golden Ticket for 154 students at City Academy and Bristol
Elementary in Webster Groves. Composer Peter Ash along with
members of the Gerdine Young Artists program gave special
presentations to campers.
Sponsored by Edward Jones and Fox Performing Arts
Charitable Foundation.
Artists-in-Residence — Gerdine Young Artists Jennifer Jakob and
Joshua Kohl gave concerts for audiences totaling approximately
1,400 at 15 venues including one juvenile detention center.
Dress Rehearsals — Student groups attended each of the four
final opera dress rehearsals as part of OTSL’s outreach efforts.
Made possible by The Saigh Foundation and Employees Community
Fund of Boeing St. Louis.
Spotlight on Opera — Panel discussions by the directors,
designers and – in one instance – the creators of the season’s
operas were held at the Ethical Society, highlighted by special
performances by Gerdine Young Artists and members of
OTSL’s music staff. Topical presentations by an outside expert –
ranging from the Alliance Française to Kakao Chocolate –
gave greater perspective and context for each opera.
Sponsored by Charter Communications.
Illustrating Opera with Amy Kaiser — OTSL successfully rolled
out a new daytime, four-week lecture series led by St. Louis
Symphony Chorus Director Amy Kaiser at the Sally S. Levy
Opera Center.
A Little Lunch Music — Three free noontime concerts by
principal artists from the 2010 season were presented at three
community locations: The Grandel Theater in Grand Center,
First Presbyterian Church in Kirkwood and Bonhomme
Presbyterian Church in Chesterfield.
Sponsored by Kirkwood Area Arts Council and Chesterfield Arts.
Docent Presentations — Docent volunteers presented lectures
throughout the community to students and adult audiences
after training from SLSO Chorus Director Amy Kaiser, Webster
University professor Dr. Glen Bauer and M!W!O! National Trainer
Diane McCullough. Docents made a total of 62 presentations
to more than 1,400 individuals.
