A Letter from the Rector
The Rev. James B. Cook
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the Weekly News! With
today’s busy lifestyles, it’s important that
you feel connected to what’s happening
here at St. Mark’s. Over the last several
months, you may have noticed that
changes are being made to strengthen
communications and to keep you
informed about St. Mark’s missions,
fellowship activities, children and youth
ministries, and Christian education and
formation opportunities.
In July, we launched the new church
website: stmarkspbg.org. The website is
used primarily for the marketing of the
church and school to prospective new
members, parents, and students. It
contains a broad overview of the church,
including our history, mission, vision,
worship ministries, children and youth
programs, staff and vestry listings, along
with ways to reach them, as well as news,
photos and calendars.
In August, we launched the Weekly
News. The News is organized with you in
mind and is meant to serve as a weekly
planner! Each issue features: a lead story,
announcements, prayer lists, calendar of
upcoming events, birthdays and
anniversaries. This newsletter is printed
and distributed at all weekend worship
services as well as posted online for easy
access and printing from the web.
Launching today, you will enjoy an
expanded format of the News! This
lengthier issue will be published
periodically, and it will provide timely
content that includes feature stories that
October 2, 2011
The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost
educate and build a strong St. Mark’s
community. For members that are unable
to attend church and do not have an email
address or access to the internet, a
hardcopy of the expanded version of St.
Mark’s news will be mailed to them so
that they may enjoy news about our
vibrant community.
Periodic emails will also be sent to
provide timely church updates. It’s
important that we keep you up‐to‐date on
church happenings… please make sure we
have your current email address. Please
provide your email address by contacting
Shannon Brunner, parish secretary,
churchoffice@stmarkspbg.org.
Our goal is to continue to make
communications more effective and
efficient. With this in mind, we no longer
publish The Messenger. Key messages
that were once shared through this
newsletter will be communicated through
our weekly news, website or emails. If you
have ideas to enhance communications,
contact Kelee Shilling, Communications
Coordinator, 622‐0956, ext. 234, or email
kshilling@stmarkspbg.org.
We look forward to strengthening our
connections with you. If you have any
questions, please give me a call. And, of
course, I ask for your daily prayers.
See you Sunday!,
Celebration of Episcopal Schools’ Sunday!
Join us in celebrating St. Mark’s fifth annual
Episcopal Schools' Sunday as students share
their musical talents, read the lessons, assist
with the sermon, and meet and greet the
parishioners who support and encourage their
learning. We rejoice in our largest mission to the
community: our parish day school. With a legacy
of thirty‐two years, the people of St. Mark's opened their hearts and church
home to students, families, and teachers, who shared a common vision for the
loving, nurturing Christian environment we celebrate today. A special place, St.
Mark’s has steadily grown to support 445 students, 80 faculty and staff as well as
school families who have an understanding and a commitment to its purpose.
Today we celebrate the children that St. Mark's Church and School have called to
serve in Christ's name, and pray that God may continue to bless them.
Safeguarding God’s Children
Safeguarding God’s Children will be held TODAY, 12:30‐3:30 p.m. in the band
room. This training is required of those involved in ministry with children, youth,
and vulnerable adults at St. Mark’s. This includes Christian education teachers,
nursery volunteers, Eucharistic Visitors, youth leaders, Family Promise volunteers
and Vacation Bible School volunteers. To attend please register by calling
622.0956, ext. 226 or email pastorlisa@stmarkspbg.org.
Pilgrimage to Kenya Builds Partnership with St. James
St. Mark’s to forge new school
partnership in Kenya
Carrying bags of pencils,
pens and boxes of crayons ‐
‐ not to mention pockets
full of candy, ten St. Mark’s
parishioners will walk off
the plane and across the
tarmac in Eldoret, Kenya,
on October 20. Dozens of
Kenyans will be anxiously
waiting to welcome them.
For five days, our
parishioners will build
lasting partnerships with
our friends at St. James
Anglican Church in
Kebuson. The group will
visit schools where the 31
students being supported
by St. Mark’s Church and
School attend, and they will
visit some of the 34 farmers
we support each year by
purchasing seed and
fertilizer. These farmers
are mostly older and very
poor women who are
raising the children of
whose parents have died
from AIDS. During their
stay, our parishioners will
live in shambas (small
homes made of dirt and
cow dung).
Pastor Lisa, St. Mark’s
School chaplain, will forge a
new partnership between
St. Mark’s School and
Kaplelach School. The team
will also visit with diocesan
Bishop Christopher Rutto
and other good friends,
including the Rev. Paul
Korir, who visited St. Mark’s
several years ago, and
Mama Ada Kuto, who is the
visionary of this
partnership.
The Rev. Jim Cook and
his wife, Karen, and son,
Nate, will also travel along
with the Rev. Michael
McManus and his wife,
Cathleen; Donna Raney,
Marlene Everitt (senior
warden), Renee Restino
and Devon Placido. For
more information about
the partnership between
St. Mark’s and St. James
and how you can help send
a student to school, provide
seed for farmers, or assist
with start‐up funds for
small businesses, visit
our team returns from the
pilgrimage on October 28.
St. Mark’s to Host “Hearts of Palm” Mission
Hearts of Palm will host five,
one‐week sessions from
mid‐June through mid‐July
Imagine 150 missioners
from churches around the
country serving northern
Palm Beach County for a
week’s visit, while sleeping,
eating and resting at
St. Mark’s Youth Center and
Gymnasium, and you will
see the vision of Hearts of
Palm, a new mission being
created by St. Mark’s.
Modeled after other
mission sites that our youth
visit each summer, Hearts
of Palm will host five, oneweek
sessions from mid‐
June through mid‐July.
Our staff and other local
leaders will coordinate
work sites around the
county where service work
occurs during the day. At
night, the visiting groups
will stay in the youth center
and gym and have access to
showers, the athletic fields
and the safe, secure setting
of St. Mark’s.
Hearts of Palm will also
organize meals and social
events that are typical for
summer mission work so
popular among churches of
all denominations and
sizes.
Although Hearts of Palm
is in the early stages of
design and development,
St. Mark’s is excited to take
a leadership role in offering
a quality mission site in
south Florida. Access to
the beaches, proximity to
Disney and the wide range
of service opportunities in
Palm Beach County make
this a great mission‐site
location.
“Hearts of Palm also has
the potential to become a
serious revenue stream for
St. Mark’s,” says the Rev.
Jim Cook. “Not only can we
do God’s work in the local
community, we can be
good stewards of our
buildings and other
resources at the same time.
We are excited about this
new opportunity made
possible by the new
building at Robb Field!”
St. Mark’s Children’s and Family Ministry gears up for a great year!
An eclectic array of tea cups, treasured
ceramic teapots and floral centerpieces
set upon mauve tablecloths awaited the
twenty five who came together for St.
Mark’s tea for mothers of young children.
The tea, held during our Youth Center/
Gymnasium’s opening week, was
graciously hosted by the Episcopal
Church Women (ECW) and provided a
kick‐off for St. Mark’s newest Children’s
and Family Ministry (CFM) program:
MOPS, Mothers of Preschoolers!
Since the tea, interested moms have
been connecting with one another,
visiting other MOPS groups and making
plans for our very own MOPS. “I’m SO
excited for us to bring this kind of
experience to St. Mark’s for ALL moms of
preschoolers!” shares Julie Ronan, St.
Mark’s MOPS coordinator.
Open to church, school and community
mothers, MOPS provides an open, caring
and accepting atmosphere where women
can come together to share with each
other about mothering.
MOPS’ very first meeting at St. Mark’s
will be held Wednesday, October 19,
10:00 a.m. in the youth center/
gymnasium.
“MOPS encourages
God‐based family
living by providing a
positive and
supportive
environment for
mothers,” notes the
Rev. Holly Ostlund,
“Your help is needed
to get MOPS up and
running! Women with mothering
experience are needed to serve as
mentors and sponsors are sought to help
underwrite the program enabling all
mothers to participate. Your prayers are
sought too!”
In the past two years St. Mark’s
Children’s and Family Ministry (CFM) has
expanded to include:

•SPORK!, a monthly gathering for
families with children, offered usually the
last Sunday of every month, provides lots
of chances to get to know and interact
with other families as we eat, enjoy free
play time and participate in activities
together! Our next SPORK! will be
Sunday, October 30, 11:30 a.m..
beginning on St. Mark’s playground.
Bring a friendly costume to wear (nothing
scary!) as we learn about All Saints’ Day!
•Our No‐Rehearsal‐Everyone‐Can‐
Participate Christmas Pageant allows all
children, and their families, to join the
celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ at
our 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve service!
•Children’s Christian
Education classes are held
Sundays at 10 a.m.:
Lil’ K is an interactive
multi‐ media‐based
curriculum for preschool
children ages 3‐5. Children
get to know Lil’ K, Kai and Professor Sock
on a weekly journey of discovering
God's Word!
Hands‐On Bible classes use games,
snacks and crafts to
help kids learn about
God, because kids
retain more by
interacting with a
lesson instead of
just hearing it! Hands
On Bible classes are offered for
Kindergarten and Grades 1 & 2 and also
for Grades 3 to 5.
•Children’s Choir for young people
meets Sundays, 9:10 to 9:50 a.m.! Learn
fun songs, most with movement and
action!, that the choir will share
periodically as part of the 10 a.m.
worship service! Aileen Maxwell heads
up our Children’s Choir!
All Children’s and Family Ministry
programs and events are open to church
and school families….and our community.
So, come…..invite…...join the fun….join
the learning!
St. Mark’s Neighborhood Autism Athletic Program
A new ministry, St.
Mark’s Neighborhood
Autism Athletic Program
(SNAAP), is being launched
at St. Mark’s this fall. This
athletic program is for boys
and girls, ages 5‐18, that
have been diagnosed with
Autism Spectrum Disorder
(ASD).
"We looked around and
saw that there were no
recreational programs
dedicated specifically for
children on the autism
spectrum. With the high
rate of ASD diagnosis, and
the lack of opportunities to
get these kids together to
learn social skills while
participating in athletics,
we thought it was the
perfect time to use the
great new gymnasium at St.
Mark's to expand our reach
in the community and give
these kids an opportunity
to play in a safe and
nurturing environment,"
said Mark Tourangeau, St.
Mark’s parishioner who is
actively involved in starting
this new mission.
The program begins
Sunday, October 16, and
runs through Sunday,
December 11. There will
not be a session on Sunday,
November 27. The children
will meet each Sunday,
noon to 2:00 p.m., to learn
the fundamental skills of
basketball, kickball, and
soccer. The program also
provides support for the
families of these children.
A group of volunteers
from St. Mark’s church and
school are preparing for their
mission of working with the
children “to reach every age
and ability level.” If you have
a passion for working with
children, the program is in
need of coaches, older
children and adults to
shadow the athletes, along
with people to help with
program planning and
administration. Volunteers
must attend Safeguarding
God’s Children (see page 2).
Family Promise helping homeless families
Ninety members of the
St. Mark’s community have
responded to the mission
of Family Promise: people
of faith working together,
responding to the needs of
our homeless neighbors,
offering the necessary
support services to enable
them to achieve their
independence.
Family Promise cites
that in Palm Beach County
there are over 2,000
reported homeless children
in the school district. On
any given night, those
children may have nowhere
to sleep. Families now
make up 40% of the
homeless population.
With these staggering
statistics, St. Mark’s has
taken the lead in becoming
a host congregation within
the Family Promise
Interfaith Hospitality
Network. Our parish
provides overnight lodging,
meals and fellowship for
three to five families (up to
14 individuals) from 6:00
p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on a
weekly, rotating basis with
ten other community
churches and eight support
congregations.
Over fifty parish
members volunteered their
time and/or resources
during the week of
September 18‐25, in
support of three families
hosted at St. Mark’s: three
adults, one teen, and six
young children. Volunteers
participated in a variety of
committees ‐‐ with an
overall focus of not only
providing food and shelter,
but towards reaching out to
families in need to offer
support, respect, dignity
and love.
“One of our Family
Promise guests expressed
that she was overcome
with gratitude for the warm
and supportive
environment that our
church provided her. She
felt so welcomed, so
relaxed… that she is
planning to return for
worship services and
childcare training,” shares
Marsha Perkins, St. Mark’s
parishioner. “As we plan
our next week of service in
December to love and care
for families as avenues for
God’s grace, join me in
prayer for these families and
the ministry.“
If you would like to
volunteer your time or make
a financial contribution to
St. Mark’s School “We Will! Make a Difference!”
Make a Difference
Students, faculty and
staff of St. Mark’s School
are excited about their
2011‐2012 school year
challenge : WE WILL! Make
a Difference! “Through their
efforts, the students
demonstrate the values
that make our community
strong," said the Rev. Dr.
Lisa Barrowclough, school
chaplain. "It is gratifying to
know that so many students
go above and beyond to
help others through their
good works."
Here are some of the
ways that students learn
and give back to the
community:
Dimes for Disney:
Lower School students are
encouraged to help out at
home in order to earn
“Dimes for Disney.” These
gifts are presented during
weekly chapel, and the
funds are given to Hope
Rural School (Indiantown)
for an annual trip to an
Orlando theme park. Our
children made a difference
by raising up to $1,261!
OXFAM: To realize the
personal impact that is felt
by people who experience
hunger in our local
community and around the
globe, middle school
students participate in an
Oxfam Hunger Banquet.
This program is part of a
nationwide service learning
event that raises awareness
about hunger and poverty
through a luncheon
simulation. Students are
randomly assigned to a
high‐, middle‐, or lowincome
tier based on the
latest statistics about the
number of people living in
poverty. Only a select few
students enjoy a full lunch,
while remaining students
receive beans and rice or, in
the case of the sizable
majority, only a small bowl
of rice while seated on the
floor. Well‐researched
statistics are taught, but the
greatest impact comes from
the empathy the students
express towards the cause.
NJHS Drives: Each year
the National Junior Honor
Society collects food, toys,
and other items to provide
to those in need.
In response to a need
expressed by the Rev.
Michael McManus, Priest in
Charge, St. George’s
Church, on behalf of St.
George’s feeding program,
students collected a full,
van‐load of paper kitchen
products. Last year’s drive
honored the late Mr. Art
Masterson, the much
beloved history teacher,
whose passion for outreach
“in our own backyard” had
inspired students for years.
St. Mark’s students
develop a sense of
responsibility to their
community through active
participation in service
related activities. Students
adopt skills and leadership
abilities through their
efforts, and they foster a
sense of compassion as
they give of themselves for
the betterment of others
and the glory of God.
Oxfam Hunger Banquet
raises student awareness
about hunger and poverty.
Students collected over
3,435 non‐perishable items
for “Food for Families.”
Students collected “Coins for
Kenya” to provide funds to
send African children to
boarding school.
‘Heart warming and joyous’:Friends of the Groom
Friends of the Groom’s visit to St. Mark’s was a wonderful surprise unfolding as we had
no idea that the weekend would offer such spiritual growth! We were very blessed to be
a part of the experience. It was heart warming and joyous to see teenagers having fun
and receiving some amazing grace!
Friends of the Groom
workshop participants give
‘Christian drama’ a try!
Professional Christian theatre company Friends of the Groom provided thought
provoking, humorous messages and entertainment September 23‐25 at St. Mark’s! Tom
Long, Jocelyn Sluka and Susan Jung, FOG’s performers, provided Friday performances and
inspired an overnight youth retreat including teenagers from churches throughout north
Palm Beach County. With over 75 in attendance, Saturday’s fun, ‘hands on learning’
workshop was a huge success followed by rave reviews of Friends of the Groom at all
weekend worship services. Special thanks to Charlie Erkman, Patty Erkman, Jodi Gooding
and Fred LaCrone for their assistance throughout this powerful, God‐filled weekend!
