developed with <strong>Tom</strong>‟s student-athlete goals <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. He firmly believes that <strong>the</strong> proper<br />

<strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> athletics will help one be a better student. The program <strong>is</strong> run with that <strong>in</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>d and year <strong>in</strong> and year out <strong>the</strong>se swimmers and divers cont<strong>in</strong>ue to prove that. The team<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ues to perform very well <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> natatorium and <strong>the</strong>y cont<strong>in</strong>ue to excel <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

cl<strong>as</strong>sroom. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 2012 school year five of <strong>the</strong> team‟s l<strong>as</strong>t ten capta<strong>in</strong>s f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong> law school. Both <strong>the</strong> men‟s and women‟s teams were named Academic All-<br />

America by <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong> Swim Coaches Association of America – with <strong>the</strong> men hold<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> 3 rd best team GPA <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nation.<br />

In BC‟s f<strong>in</strong>al meet l<strong>as</strong>t <strong>se<strong>as</strong>on</strong> aga<strong>in</strong>st Holy Cross, <strong>Groden</strong> picked up h<strong>is</strong> 637 th victory <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eagle‟s Swim Coach.<br />

In h<strong>is</strong> 39 <strong>se<strong>as</strong>on</strong>s, <strong>Groden</strong> h<strong>as</strong> am<strong>as</strong>sed a record of 637-309-5. The women‟s record over <strong>the</strong>se years <strong>is</strong> 342-135-5 and <strong>the</strong><br />

men are at 296-173. <strong>Groden</strong> w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> first NCAA coach to record 250 w<strong>in</strong>s with both a men‟s and women‟s program at<br />

<strong>the</strong> same <strong>in</strong>stitution.<br />

<strong>Groden</strong> enters <strong>the</strong> 2012 <strong>se<strong>as</strong>on</strong> with more w<strong>in</strong>s than any o<strong>the</strong>r NCAA Swim Coach. He p<strong>as</strong>sed recently retired<br />

North Carol<strong>in</strong>a coach, Frank Comfort. Frank, who appears below with <strong>Tom</strong> f<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>hed with 578 w<strong>in</strong>s, mostly at h<strong>is</strong><br />

beloved North Carol<strong>in</strong>a. Th<strong>is</strong> happened when <strong>the</strong> Eagles captured two w<strong>in</strong>s aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> University of Ma<strong>in</strong>e January 26,<br />

2008. <strong>Groden</strong>‟s 637 w<strong>in</strong>s have all come <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Boston</strong> <strong>College</strong> coach and that <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> most w<strong>in</strong>s at any one school by a<br />

college swim coach.<br />

On November 22 nd of 2003 Coach <strong>Groden</strong> picked up h<strong>is</strong> 500 th w<strong>in</strong> when BC defeated <strong>the</strong> University of New<br />

Hampshire. Then on January 17 th when BC toppled both <strong>the</strong> women & men‟s squads of <strong>the</strong> University of Rhode Island,<br />

he picked up both h<strong>is</strong> 501 st and 502 nd w<strong>in</strong>s. These two w<strong>in</strong>s equaled and p<strong>as</strong>sed Coach John “Snooks” Kelley <strong>as</strong> <strong>Boston</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong>‟s w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gest coach (all sports). Th<strong>is</strong> meant a great deal to Coach <strong>Groden</strong> for a few re<strong>as</strong>ons. Snooks w<strong>as</strong> actually<br />

<strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong> <strong>Tom</strong> gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pool directors job at BC after h<strong>is</strong> graduation <strong>in</strong> 1972. <strong>Tom</strong> had done some volunteer work<br />

for Coach Kelley at h<strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner city camp <strong>the</strong> previous summer. Also when Snooks coached h<strong>is</strong> first hockey team at BC <strong>in</strong><br />

1932-33, <strong>Tom</strong>‟s fa<strong>the</strong>r, Harold <strong>Groden</strong> ‟35 w<strong>as</strong> on h<strong>is</strong> team. <strong>Tom</strong> considered it a great personal and professional honor to<br />

equal Coach Kelley‟s record. Coach <strong>Groden</strong> also lead <strong>the</strong> women‟s team to thirty-five consecutive w<strong>in</strong>s start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1976<br />

through 1978. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> longest w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g streak of any team at <strong>Boston</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>in</strong> any of its thirty-five sports.

In championship meets, <strong>Groden</strong> h<strong>as</strong> led <strong>the</strong> women‟s team to many successes. The latest championship meet w<strong>in</strong><br />

came <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2005 <strong>se<strong>as</strong>on</strong> when <strong>the</strong> women captured <strong>the</strong>ir sixth ECAC Championship. It w<strong>as</strong> an excellent performance <strong>as</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>y defeated UNH by just five po<strong>in</strong>ts. In all, <strong>the</strong> women have captured twenty-two titles. These <strong>in</strong>clude Greater <strong>Boston</strong><br />

(5), ECAC (6), National Catholic (2) and New England (9) titles. The team h<strong>as</strong> also f<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>hed <strong>as</strong> high <strong>as</strong> second <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> BIG<br />

EAST Championship (1985-86, 1986-87) and once placed <strong>as</strong> high <strong>as</strong> fifth at <strong>the</strong> NCAA Div<strong>is</strong>ion II Championship. The<br />

women have found <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong> all different places s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> advent of women‟s sports and championships started tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

place nationally <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early 1970‟s. The Eagles were participants <strong>in</strong> both <strong>the</strong> early AIAW meets and <strong>the</strong> NCAA Meets<br />

that started to take place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1980‟s The first female to represent <strong>Boston</strong> <strong>College</strong> at a national Championship w<strong>as</strong><br />

Siobhan Campbell ‟79. Siobhan w<strong>as</strong> a diver and went to <strong>the</strong> AIAW‟s back <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> late 1970‟s.<br />

The men‟s team h<strong>as</strong> had its share of success <strong>in</strong> championship meets with one of <strong>the</strong> best th<strong>is</strong> p<strong>as</strong>t <strong>se<strong>as</strong>on</strong>. As an<br />

NCAA non-scholarship program compet<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st schools that do offer aid, It h<strong>as</strong> yet to w<strong>in</strong> a championship meet.<br />

However <strong>the</strong>y had one of <strong>the</strong>ir best f<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>hes th<strong>is</strong> p<strong>as</strong>t year. The men‟s squad (above) placed second <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2011 ECAC<br />

Championships held at <strong>the</strong> University of Pittsburgh. Th<strong>is</strong> equals our previous best which w<strong>as</strong> three second-place team<br />

f<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>hes at <strong>the</strong> New England‟s (1988-89, 1989-90, 1990-91) and a pair of thirds at <strong>the</strong> National Catholic Championships<br />

(1992-93, 1993-94). In <strong>the</strong> 2002 <strong>se<strong>as</strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>y captured <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong><strong>as</strong>tern Invitational and <strong>the</strong> year before <strong>the</strong>y were first at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Black Bear Invitational. Both <strong>the</strong> women and <strong>the</strong> men won <strong>the</strong> Orange Bowl Cl<strong>as</strong>sic held <strong>in</strong> Key Largo <strong>in</strong> January of<br />

2007 – with <strong>the</strong> men defend<strong>in</strong>g that title <strong>in</strong> 2008.<br />

<strong>Boston</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual swimmers have achieved great th<strong>in</strong>gs dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Groden</strong>‟s era. Six female swimmers have<br />

qualified for <strong>the</strong> NCAA Div<strong>is</strong>ion I Championships, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g one <strong>in</strong> 2005. Graduates from <strong>Groden</strong>‟s program have been<br />

chosen <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> school‟s Eagle of <strong>the</strong> Year five times and eight former swimmers or divers have been enshr<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Varsity Club Hall of Fame at <strong>Boston</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

As mentioned above <strong>the</strong> BC Swimm<strong>in</strong>g & Div<strong>in</strong>g teams excel academically. They always have one of <strong>the</strong> best<br />

GPA‟s of <strong>Boston</strong> <strong>College</strong>‟s thirty-one varsity sports. The athletic department <strong>as</strong> a whole prides itself on produc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

excellent student-athletes <strong>in</strong> all sports. L<strong>as</strong>t year, BC led <strong>the</strong> nation with twenty-one of those teams sport<strong>in</strong>g perfect<br />

APR‟s. The Swim teams have always qualified for <strong>the</strong> CSCAA‟s Academic All-America status and generally near <strong>the</strong> top<br />

– <strong>as</strong> were <strong>the</strong> men th<strong>is</strong> p<strong>as</strong>t <strong>se<strong>as</strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> 3 rd place nationally. The team h<strong>as</strong> had three NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ners <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>as</strong>t six years. Liz Byron ‟06 and Chr<strong>is</strong>topher Wilson-Byrne ‟07 were jo<strong>in</strong>ed th<strong>is</strong> <strong>se<strong>as</strong>on</strong> by our four time<br />

MVP John Maloy „11<strong>as</strong> a well deserv<strong>in</strong>g recipient of that award.

Coach <strong>Groden</strong> believes totally <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> team approach to swimm<strong>in</strong>g. A picture like th<strong>is</strong> above <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>dicative of how<br />

<strong>the</strong> BC team approaches <strong>the</strong>ir sport. The coach and <strong>the</strong> team capta<strong>in</strong>s work and expect all to contribute to <strong>the</strong> team<br />

success by tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and support<strong>in</strong>g all teammates. Success <strong>is</strong> always much more fun when it takes a team. <strong>Tom</strong> also<br />

believes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> team <strong>se<strong>as</strong>on</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g part of <strong>the</strong> educational process of a school like <strong>Boston</strong> <strong>College</strong>. The team plans its<br />

schedule around both competition and <strong>the</strong> chance to educate <strong>the</strong> whole person. Th<strong>is</strong> p<strong>as</strong>t <strong>se<strong>as</strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>cluded a trip to<br />

Broadway for a play (below) and a tour of our nation‟s Capitol around our trips to swim at Army and Loyola

Individually, <strong>Groden</strong> h<strong>as</strong> been <strong>the</strong> recipient of many coach of <strong>the</strong> year awards from <strong>the</strong> ECAC, <strong>the</strong> BIG EAST,<br />
