2008 Annual Report
When we expose<br />
someone <strong>to</strong> a writer<br />
like Updike, we<br />
help make Denver<br />
a much more<br />
interesting place.<br />
For the Denver Public<br />
Library, 2008 was a year<br />
of accomplishments,<br />
and also challenges.<br />
_<br />
The Democratic National Convention was a<br />
highlight of the year, with meetings and events<br />
happening at Library locations. Our display of<br />
his<strong>to</strong>ric artifacts from Denver’s 1908 convention<br />
drew hundreds of first-time visi<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> Central.<br />
2008 also brought the beginning of the current<br />
economic downturn. Cus<strong>to</strong>mers came <strong>to</strong> us<br />
in unprecedented numbers, seeking assistance<br />
in the job market, bringing their children <strong>to</strong><br />
s<strong>to</strong>rytimes and programs, and logging on <strong>to</strong><br />
computers. Many cus<strong>to</strong>mers rediscovered<br />
the Library while others stepped foot in our<br />
doors for the first time ever <strong>to</strong> check out books,<br />
CDs, and DVDs, get resume advice, or attend<br />
classes, all without spending a dime.<br />

In <strong>to</strong>ugh economic times, our cus<strong>to</strong>mers need<br />
us more than ever. To ensure our relevance and<br />
sustainability, staff used the Balanced Scorecard<br />
model <strong>to</strong> create a well-defined, strategic plan<br />
that will successfully lead us in<strong>to</strong> the future.<br />
And I’m going <strong>to</strong> do<br />
it next year, <strong>to</strong>o.<br />
We continue <strong>to</strong> benefit from a strong alliance with<br />
the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation<br />

Booklovers’ Ball<br />
When the librarian’s away, the books will<br />
play! 2008 Booklovers’ Ball guests came<br />
face <strong>to</strong> face with their favorite fictional<br />
characters including Scarlett O’Hara,<br />
Tom Sawyer, Dorothy Gale and Othello.<br />
The eco-friendly event—without speeches,<br />
auctions or envelopes—was a fantastic<br />
evening of cocktails, dinner and dancing<br />
at the Central Library.<br />
Proceeds from the Ball help purchase<br />
books and materials for students of all<br />
ages. When you support our fundraising<br />
events, you support the Library.<br />

Evil Companions<br />
The Evil Companions Literary Award is presented annually<br />
<strong>to</strong> a poet or writer who embodies the spirit of Denver’s<br />
original Evil Companions, a group of Denver writers who<br />
met in the ‘50s and ‘60s <strong>to</strong> drink and discuss writing<br />
and the world. Jorie Graham was the recipient of the<br />
2008 Evil Companions Literary Award.<br />
Proceeds from this event benefit DPL.<br />
Rare & Not-so-Rare Book and Art Auction<br />
Book and art aficionados gathered at the Central Library<br />
for an evening of fun, food and bidding on treasures.<br />
Proceeds from the Auction were dedicated <strong>to</strong> the<br />
Western His<strong>to</strong>ry Book Conservation Fund, which allows<br />
the Library <strong>to</strong> maintain our unparalleled collection<br />
of Western His<strong>to</strong>ry books, manuscripts, and pho<strong>to</strong>s.<br />
33rd Annual Used Book Sale<br />
Each year, thousands flock <strong>to</strong> the Central Library in<br />
search of bargain books, DVDs, CDs, and books-on-tape.<br />
Proceeds from the sale benefit the Library’s Books and<br />
Materials Fund.<br />
