generally distributed throughout the entire Aspen Grove Section <strong>and</strong><br />
in "prairie bluffs" of trembling aspen in the eastern <strong>and</strong> central<br />
parts of the <strong>District</strong>. However, correspondingly high larval populations<br />
failed to develop <strong>and</strong> resultant skeletonizing of the foliage<br />
was less severe than expected. Damage was most severe on aspen reproduction,<br />
but where localized infestations were particularly heavy, the<br />
foliage in the entire crown of trees up to 4" D.B.H. was completely<br />
skeletonized.<br />
The unusually high populations of adults caused light to<br />
moderate defoliation early in the season in the Esterhazy, Abernethy,<br />
Bulyea, Moosomin, Broadview, Odessa, McLean, Kipling,Froude, Weyburn<br />
<strong>and</strong> Moose Mountain Provincial Park areas. Larval feeding commenced<br />
in the latter part of June <strong>and</strong> by mid-August, patchy to almost continuous<br />
skeletonizing of the foliage extended over the entire area from Maryfield<br />
<strong>and</strong> the Moose Mountain Provincial Park, northwest through McLean <strong>and</strong><br />
Bulyea <strong>and</strong> eastward to Ituna <strong>and</strong> Yorkton. In addition, localized<br />
moderate to severe infestations developed some distance to the west<br />
of the main area in the Trans-Canada Campsite near Besant, <strong>and</strong> at<br />
Elbow, Davidson <strong>and</strong> Chamberlain.<br />
4.2.9 <strong>Forest</strong> Tent Caterpillar, Malacosoma disstria Hbn.:- Populations<br />
continued to decline in the trembling aspen st<strong>and</strong>s in the Cypress<br />
Hills <strong>and</strong> none were found elsewhere in the <strong>District</strong> for the first time<br />
in several years. In the Cypress Hills Provincial <strong>Forest</strong>, the old<br />
infestation in the Park Block completely subsided <strong>and</strong> only two small<br />
patches of light to moderate defoliation remained in the East Block.<br />
One patch, located in sec. 9, tp. 9, rge. 24, W 3rd mer., covered<br />
approximately 150 acres <strong>and</strong> the other in sec. 3, tp. 9, rge. 25,<br />
W 3rd mer. was limited to about 30 acres.<br />
As shown in Table 2, results of egg surveys carried out in<br />
the fall indicate that present low populations will continue to decline<br />
<strong>and</strong> cause no noticeable defoliation of trembling aspen in 1964.<br />
