The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute and the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center will be sponsoring two courses related to
Neurological Management & Rehabilitation. The first course, CLINICAL NEUROSCIENCE FOR PRACTITIONERS: EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACHES TO
DIAGNOSING & MANAGING NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, Dec. 1 & all day Friday, Dec. 2. The second
course, STROKE MANAGEMENT AND REHABILITATION: CRITICAL ASPECTS FOR PRACTITIONERS is scheduled for all day Saturday, Dec. 3.
Participants may attend both courses or elect designated components of the conference. Physicians and other clinicians need the knowledge, competencies,
and practice strategies presented within this educational activity in analyzing the scientific evidence for different interventions in treating and managing
neurological conditions and in making clinical decisions.

EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACHES TO DIAGNOSING & MANAGING NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS
DESCRIPTION
Primary care practitioners often assume a critical role in the diagnosis and management of patients with neurological disorders/diseases. Frequently,
they are the first clinicians to suspect the possibility of these conditions and to identify the need to refer patients for comprehensive neurological
evaluation. Following evaluation and appropriate interventions, they often continue to play a vital role as members of the team in the management of the
patient. This course will present an overview of the information which primary care practitioners need to close the gap between their present knowledgebase
and the most up-to-date evidence-based information which medical science has been accumulating with respect to the pathophysiology, diagnosis,
treatment, and management of a broad spectrum of neurological conditions.
OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
1. Discuss the most up-to-date techniques and approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases and disorders commonly
seen within the primary care setting.
2. Describe the pathophysiological basis of these disorders.
3. Discuss the evaluation, diagnosis and early treatment of axial pain, non-radicular pain and radicular pain.
4. Illustrate the role of the primary care practitioner in evaluating and managing patients diagnosed with or presenting symptoms suggestive
of the following: sleep disorders, dizziness, acute visual problems, tremors, normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), mild cognitive deficits,
and neuropathies, presenting as tingling hands and feet.
5. Discuss scientific evidence for best practices within the delineated disease states/disorders.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be asked to self-assess the achievement of these educational objectives.

STROKE MANAGEMENT AND REHABILITATION:
CRITICAL ASPECTS FOR PRACTITIONERS
DESCRIPTION
This interdisciplinary one day course will present an overview of medical interventions and rehabilitation techniques in the management of patients who
have suffered strokes. The course will open with a review of Joint Commission measure sets for assessing outcomes in the treatment of acute stroke
and related Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) guidelines. This will be followed by other evidence-based approaches
related to diagnosis and clinical management of stroke and facilitation of recovery of function. Interventional services and techniques to reverse the
adverse effects of ischemia and to restore more normal vascular perfusion will be reviewed. Outcomes from the Sammpris Trial and specific techniques
for Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) will be included in these discussions. Family education and communication will be integral aspects of the course.
The management of severe swallowing disorders, including ethical concerns will be explored. The course will additionally cover primary stroke
prevention, length of stay considerations, and research evidence with respect to new treatments and established therapy interventions.
OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
1. Review and apply the most recent Joint Commission evidence-based measure sets for appropriate administration (timelines and indications/
contra-indications) of thrombolytic and other pharmaceutical agents for the management of acute stroke and applicable CARF standards.
2. Discuss radiologic imaging in the diagnosis of stroke.
3. Describe surgical/endovascular interventional services for managing acute stroke and restoring normal blood flow.
4. Discuss and apply relevant findings from the Sammpris Trial.
5. Describe interventions for Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH).
6. Discuss approaches to family education and engagement of families in the treatment planning process.
7. Identify clinical options for patients with severe swallowing disorders and related ethical considerations.
8. Discuss the use of everyday technology in assisting individuals with communication issues as a sequelae to stroke.
9. Describe strategies for primary prevention of stroke, including new screening tools.
10. Discuss the relationship between clinical presentation and appropriate length of stay in patients with stroke.
11. Explore preliminary research on new approaches to the treatment of stroke.
12. Analyze the evidence with respect to therapy interventions in the treatment of stroke.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be asked to self-assess the achievement of these educational objectives.

Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, rehabilitative services are provided
for brain and spinal cord injuries, stroke and pediatric and geriatric
rehabilitation. JFK Medical Center is one of only two hospitals in
New Jersey to be designated a Comprehensive Stroke Center by
the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. It was
recently rated #1 in the State and the Top 5% in the nation for
Stroke Treatment (Healthgrades.com). The New Jersey
Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center is affiliated with the
Department of Neuroscience of Seton Hall University’s School of
Graduate Medical Education.
The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute at JFK Medical Center,
an affiliate of Solaris Health System, was established in 1974, and
since that time has grown to become New Jersey’s most
comprehensive rehabilitation facility, with extensive inpatient and
outpatient services. Its programs are designed to address the
physical, psychological, social and vocational potential of each
patient, with a goal of maximizing independence. Aggressive Stroke
Rehabilitation is offered, including physical and occupational
therapy, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, chronic pain,
vocational and occupational services, audiology and speech
pathology.
TRAVEL INFORMATION
The JFK Conference Center, 70 James Street, Edison, NJ,
08820, is conveniently located in Central New Jersey, 45
minutes from midtown Manhattan, 20 minutes from Newark
International Airport and 2 miles from the METROPARK train
station (Iselin, NJ) which services Amtrak and NJ Transit lines.
The Center is also readily accessible from the Garden State
Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike. Directions will be
