Category 6 A 

NOT the same as Category 6A 

In the course of the market launch and growing diffusion of 

10 GigaBit Ethernet acc. to IEEE 802.3an, the adequate cabling 

standards designed for the necessary bandwidth of 500 MHz 

are available now. 

However, the requirements of the US regulations (EIA/TIA) differ from 

the international (ISO/IEC) and European (EN) regulations. 

The latter have higher power reserves and therefore provide more 

planning and installation certainty. 

The international and European standards define cabling 

from 100 to 1,000 MHz: 

Class D: up to 100 MHz 

Class E: up to 250 MHz 

Class E A 

: up to 500 MHz new 

Class F: up to 600 MHz 

Class F A 

: up to 1,000 MHz new 

Transmission class E A 

is designed for applications up to GigaBit/sec. 

Class F and class F A 

provide significantly higher reserves and support 

the next Ethernet generations (40 and 100 GigaBit/sec). 

The US standard is limited to cabling up to 500 MHz.

To describe a cabling system, it is necessary to define the requirements 

to be met by the channel, the permanent link and the 

component. 

Right from the outset, the international and European standards 

have followed the logic of describing the system requirements 

(channel and permanent link) according to classes and the component 

requirements according to categories. This allows a clear 

distinction between system properties and component properties. 

The ISO/IEC and EN standard is considerably more stringent than 

the US EIA/TIA standard demanding significantly higher values for 

near-end crosstalk (NEXT) in the frequency range from 250 MHz up 

to the intended maximum frequency of 500 MHz. The demand on 

the connector is 3 dB higher at 500 MHz which amouns 30 % more 

performance. 

Category 6 A 

is NOT the same as category 6A 

Above 250 MHz, the NEXT value drops by only 30 dB/decade in the 

case of ISO/IEC and EN whereas it drops by 40 dB/decade in the case 

of EIA/TIA.

quick assembly in just 90 seconds without the use of tools. 

The one-piece jack is assembled without the use of tools using the 

punch-down method and allows extremely short assembly times of 

less than 90 seconds and thus low installation costs. The punchdown 

connectors used allow flexible as well as rigid conductors to 

be assembled.

1. Preparing the cable 

Strip the outer sheath about 30 mm, pull back the copper braid 

and strip the foil leaving about 3 mm of it in place. Open the 

pairs and arrange them as they are in the plug. Shorten the 

conductors to 12 mm. 

2. Lay-up of the conductors – first side 

Place the conductors into the coloured notches, cut them back 

using a flat side cutter and slightly close the cover.

3. Lay-up of the conductors – second side and closing 

Again place the conductors into the coloured notches and cut 

them back. Then press both sides together until they lock.

4. Final installation 

Cut back the copper braid and add a marking if necessary. 

The dust protection flap must be removed before installation 

in wall outlets. 

The jack covers are hinged making it easy to open them 

with the tool supplied and then re-use them. This not only 

reduces costs but also protects the environment.
