our parish together.
Dear Friends,
Perrysburg, Ohio
Next weekend is certainly one of the highlights of our 150 th
anniversary celebration. The 12 noon Mass will be celebrated by
Bishop Blair as we give thanks in a special way to God for the gift of
our parish. A parish picnic in our school gym follows immediately
after the Mass. As I write this, the following priests have indicated
that they are joining us for the celebration: Fr. Tom Leyland, Msgr.
Chas Singler, Fr. Mike Dandurand, Fr. Tom Extejt, and Fr. Ron
Schock. Several of the Ursuline Sisters who taught at St. Rose
School years ago are also coming. Please come and let’s celebrate
As mentioned in my letter of last week, exciting times are upon us here at St.
Rose Parish. One of the things that was very clear from our focus groups and our parish
assessment meetings this past spring is that our parishioners place a high priority on taking
good care of our historic church building. As a result, we have recently begun work
on tuck-pointing the exterior of the building to preserve the physical structure of our
beautiful church. Further, construction will begin at the close of the month on a new,
much-needed elevator.
We are equally as excited to announce two opportunities to develop the spiritual
structure of our church – the people of St. Rose Parish. The focus groups of last spring
identified not only the physical needs of the church but also a need for a “return to basics”
with a focus on the tenets of our Catholic Faith. With this in mind, we invite you to participate
in two very exciting opportunities to nourish your spirit and enjoy time spent with
others in our St. Rose community.
First, we will be offering a weekly “Soup & Salad” Event in which you are invited
to dine on delicious soups and salads with other members of our St. Rose community
followed by a brief discussion about the Mass and the upcoming changes. Soups will
be provided by various St. Rose ministries and participants are asked to bring a salad to
share. These meetings will be held on Monday evenings from 6pm to 7:30pm, beginning
September 12th, 19 th , 26 th and concluding October 3 rd . See the bulletin for details.
Secondly, we will be offering “Evangelium”, a new adult faith formation course
presented by St. Rose seminarian, Jeff Walker, in which weekly courses will be offered
on a full panorama of our Catholic beliefs. These classes will be offered beginning in
September through May. You may come to one session or all twenty-five, or just those
that interest you most. The cost to participate is $20 which covers the expense of the
book. See the bulletin for registration details.
We have much to be thankful for and celebrate at St. Rose!!
Blessings,
Msgr. Borger
ATTENTION: CHANGE IN DAILY MASS TIME
Effective Monday, August 22, 9:00 am daily Mass will begin at 9:15 am. This
change is necessary because St. Rose School is starting the day 15 minutes
later this year due to Perrysburg public schools also starting 15 minutes
later. In order for us to avoid a traffic congestion, our daily Mass will begin at
9:15 am. Sunday Masses will remain at 9 am. The weekly all school Mass
will usually be on Wednesdays at 9:15 am. The Monday morning confession
time will remain at 8:30 am. Also effective Monday, August 22, will be a
change in the starting time for Eucharistic Adoration from 9:30 am to 9:45
am. If you have any questions please call the parish office at 419-874-4559.

Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time August 21, 2011
Please welcome Rev. Msgr. Ted Bertagni who will
speak at all the Masses on behalf of Cross International
Catholic Outreach which was founded to create a
meaningful link between parishes in America and the
priests and nuns working in the Church overseas in the
Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Central and South America.
Please be generous in your response to Msgr.’s appeal.
Brochures will be provided if you wish to support this
worthy Catholic ministry.
ST. ROSE MINISTRY
music at the 10:30 Mass on the 2 nd and 4 th Sundays of the Month.
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
“My initiation into the Catholic Church took place years after
I first felt the call to become closer to God. When my husband
and I married 10 years ago, we were actually married in the
Methodist Church. This was the faith that I had grown up in, although
religion did not play a big role in my life. My husband had been born
and raised in the Catholic Church and after some time, he strongly believed
that this was the faith that he belonged to. However, we attended the Methodist
Church on and off until we had our first child. I had misconceptions about
the Catholic faith, but after five months we decided to baptize our baby in the
Catholic Church.
Through the years I still kept feeling that I was missing something in my
life, and one day last year I realized I needed a relationship with God. It was
at this point in my life where my desire to be a better wife and mother led me
to the decision to walk the journey in the RCIA. From the very moment that I
made the call, a weight was lifted and I have never felt so liberated. I made
the decision to hand over my concerns to God.
I can’t even explain how wonderful the journey through the RCIA was.
The whole RCIA team was wonderful and I always felt very comfortable asking
my questions, and I had many! I really looked forward to our weekly sessions
and being with the other adults. Being initiated into the Church at the
Easter Vigil was a very exciting and emotional experience for me. My connection
with God has become far more than I had thought possible. My daily
life is filled with more patience and understanding and less anxiety and judgment.
Our family life is better than ever, with daily prayer, and many times
being initiated by our four-year-old daughter. What can be better than that? If
this conversion can happen to me, it can definitely happen for anyone!”
Stacy Pantenburg.
For information about RCIA, call Diane Hider at 419-874-1165, or you
may contact the parish secretary at 419-874-4559.
Pardon our dust…
We have recently begun work on the exterior of the church to
preserve our beautiful, historic treasure and we apologize for the
mess and inconvenience. The church exterior will be cleaned,
and the mortar joints which require repair will be “tuckpointed”.
The term “tuck-point” comes from the process of
tucking mortar into the mortar
joint with the point of a trowel
called a "pointing trowel". Exterior wood trim and decorative
pieces will also be painted and the cross on the top of the steeple
will be straightened. The contractor estimates this will take
about 90 days of work, beginning on the west-side of the church
and rotating clockwise around the building until complete.
Tuck-pointing every 25 years or so is necessary to keep
the building from suffering water damage or being weakened
structurally. If water is allowed to get past the mortar and into
the wall, stone failure may occur such as cracking or spalling
(popping off of the stone face) and the interior walls may be
damaged. It is messy and time-consuming work but the last time
the church was tuck-pointed was in the 1980’s.
We greatly appreciate your patience as we complete this most
necessary maintenance of our beautiful church.
