Dear Friends,
Celebrate St. Rose!
Perrysburg, Ohio
Her name was Isabel Flores y Oliva, and she was born 1586
in Lima, Peru. Her parents were Spanish colonials. Very early on
she acquired a nickname—Rose. She made the name official by
choosing it for her Confirmation name.
As a young woman, Rose chose to become a Dominican tertiary
(commonly called today a “Third Order” Dominican). She did
not live in a convent, but rather lived a contemplative life of prayer
and penance at her family home. As was the custom of the day, she wore the Dominican
habit of white and black.
There was a strong spirit of faith and prayer in Lima during Rose’s day— producing
a remarkable number of canonized saints. The young Rose was confirmed by St.
Turibius, the archbishop of Lima. Rose was a friend of St. Martin de Porres. She was
also a contemporary of the Lima saints John Macias and Francis Solano.
St. Rose experienced opposition from her family and friends when she chose to
forego marriage and become a Dominican tertiary. Yet, her brother Ferdinand eventually
helped build her hermitage on the family property.
St. Rose was blessed by the gift of prayer. Indeed, she experienced a mystical
prayer life similar to that of another Dominican tertiary—St. Catherine of Siena. St. Rose
also dedicated her life to doing penance for sin—the acts of penance she performed seem
very severe to our modern understanding.
When she died on August 24, 1617 at the age of only 31, the entire city of Lima
venerated her as a saint. She was canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671, becoming the
first canonized saint of the western hemisphere. Hence, St. Rose of Lima is patroness of
the Americas.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church twice quotes St. Rose of Lima. First, it
references St. Rose in teaching about the necessity of our participating in the sacrifice of
Christ—we are to become Christ’s partners in the great act of salvation by uniting our
suffering to his. St. Rose said, “Apart from the cross, there is no other ladder by which
we may get to heaven” (CCC 618). And second, the catechism quotes St. Rose in teaching
about our duty to help the poor, noting that St. Rose said, “When we serve the poor
and the sick, we serve Jesus. We must not fail to help our neighbors, because in them we
serve Jesus” (CCC 2449).
Even in this modern day, this woman of faith and prayer can teach us much. And
certainly our parish benefits from her intercession. Santa Rosa de Lima, pray for us!

ATTENTION: CHANGE IN DAILY MASS TIME
On Monday, August 22, the 9:00 am daily Mass time changed to 9:15 am. This change
was necessary because St. Rose School is starting 15 minutes later this year due to the
fact that Perrysburg public schools are starting 15 minutes later. In order for us to avoid
traffic congestions, our daily Mass will be at 9:15 am. Sunday Masses will remain at 9
am. The weekly all school Mass will usually be on Wednesdays at 9:15 am. Monday
morning confession time will remain at 8:30 am. Also, the starting time for Eucharistic
Adoration has changed from 9:30 am to 9:45 am. If you have any questions please call
the parish office at 419-874-4559 or check the Mass schedule on page 3 in the bulletin.

WE ARE GRATEFUL STEWARDS
Our celebration of 150 years as a parish certainly has helped us to call to
mind the many blessings God has bestowed on us over the years. We seek
to imitate the Lord in his generosity to us. Our Grateful Stewards tithe for
the month of September will be St. Paul’s Outreach: Catholic Faith Alive
on Campus. Saint Paul’s Outreach actively invites college students to a life
of Christian discipleship. With Saint Paul as an example, they create vibrant,
faith-filled environments that challenge students to deepen their relationships
with Christ in the fullness of the Catholic Church. This fall, St.
Rose Parishioner Jillian Barrick will be serving as a missionary for St.
Paul’s Outreach at Ohio State in Columbus. Jillian writes, “I plan to share
Christ’s love and message through my work as a St. Paul’s Outreach missionary.
I will put this into action by leading and living in an intentional
Catholic women’s Household, outreaching to students on the OSU campus,
planning bi-weekly women’s groups and events, and much more!” For

In gratitude for God’s goodness to our parish community, St. Rose Parish
will gladly give 5% of next weekend’s collection to St. Paul’s Outreach to
help support the missionary work of our parishioner Jillian Barrick.
How has God blessed you in recent days? What gifts do you have that can
be shared with the parish to build up the Body of Christ?
Pardon our dust…
As you have noticed the work on the
exterior of the church to preserve our beautiful,
historic treasure has begun. We apologize
for the mess and inconvenience. The church
exterior has been cleaned. The mortar joints
which require repair are being ground and
“tuck-pointed”. The exterior wood trim
around the stained glass windows and decorative
pieces will be caulked and painted. Also,
the cross on the top of the steeple will be
straightened. The contractor estimates this
will take about 90 days of work, beginning on
the west-side of the church and rotating clockwise around the building until
complete. Thanks to your prayers being answered a larger new modern
elevator will be installed and operational by Thanksgiving. Demolition of
the new elevator will begin on Monday
August 29 th . This work is messy and
time-consuming but the last time the
church was tuck-pointed was in the
1980’s.

necessary maintenance of our beautiful
church.

INITIATION OF ADULTS
The journey in the RCIA of Kurt Miller, who was initiated
into the Church in 2006: “My brother-in-law and I
were discussing an up-coming trip our family had
planned. At the end of our visit, as we left each other
to head home, he said to me,
‘Remember to enjoy the journey.’
His simple remark came to mind as I
prepared to write about my RCIA
experience.
I have been attending Mass with my
wife, Laura, for twenty years. During
Mass, I sang hymns, participated in the prayers,
followed the scripture readings, and listened during the
homily, as the priest seemed always to be addressing
the message to me. But during Holy Communion, I
would wait in the pew with my daughter, Katie, as
Laura would receive the Eucharist. Five years ago, at
Katie’s First Communion, I began to feel alone in that
pew.
With Laura as my sponsor, we started our journey in
the RCIA, together. I learned a lot about the Catholic
Church. I learned to read the Bible again and loved it; I
learned that the seven sacraments are based upon scripture;
I learned about the traditions of the Church; I
learned about the history of St. Rose Church; I learned
to pray the Rosary.
And then, at the Easter Vigil, for the first time, I wasn’t
left alone in the pew. I was able to worship fully with
my family. It was a wonderful experience and I felt
renewed; renewed because of the journey.
Our spiritual lives have been touched during the RCIA
process these last few months. We have grown together
in our faith in God. That has been a wonderful
gift! We have come to a greater appreciation and a
fuller understanding of what Jesus did for us. We realize
how much He touches our lives every day through
the Gospels, in other people, and in the Holy Eucharist.
It has truly been a worthwhile journey for both of us!

• This is a monthly event where young people and families go and pray outside of the abortion center in
Toledo.
• This event is not a protest and does not involve holding signs or yelling slogans. We stand outside of the
center and pray for those who may be seeking abortions, for those who perform abortions, and for those
who have had abortions.
• All are invited to attend, no matter your age.
