Reading this, you may be inclined to put it into a question:
“Has printing got a future?” And this may not be entirely unfounded,
realizing that print products have been recently increasingly ousted from
the market or substituted with electronic media. The e-book is competing
with the conventional printed book. Moreover, there is a trend of retrieving
information from the internet rather than from printed literature. However,
when it comes to package printing, things are quite different. Here the
world of printing is constantly becoming more colourful and versatile and,
on top of that, more creative.
At the forthcoming drupa in Düsseldorf
from 3rd to 16th May, the biggest and
most important trade show for the printing
and paper industry taking place on a
four-year cycle, the trends for the years to
come will be showcased.
We, too, will take advantage of drupa 2012
to present to our customers and visitors a
� reworks of innovations which, we do not
doubt, will arouse their enthusiasm. In line
with our corporate maxim“passion for
innovation”, we again invested several
thousand work hours in R&D, with a focus
on improving print quality and enhancing
process pro� tability by increasing the
effective press up-time through fast and
easy job change-over. Besides, the subject
of sustainability of resources continues
gaining importance.
Themed “THE EASY WAY”, our drupa 2012
stand will present visitors from the trade
with highly attractive upgrades of the EASY
automation modules for both � exographic
and gravure printing presses. Please note
that concurrent with drupa we are staging
an in-house EXPO at our Lengerich
headquarters, where a number of the latest
innovations will be exclusively on show.

2011 was the most successful year in
Windmöller & Hölscher's 140-year history,
and we are quite optimistic that the
positive development will continue also in
the time to come. The employment of a
hundred new staff members and the
addition to our facilities of another
assembly building testify to this attitude.
Never before have we been able to sell
so many machines and production lines
as we did in 2011, and this also goes for
printing presses. Looking at the contents
of this EXTRA, you will � nd that the subject
of printing continues being a major focus

The market launch of the
world's � rst electronically
interlinked and completely
digitally equipped paper
sack line, including digital
control, drive, and pasting
technology, has created a sensation.
More than 100 expert visitors from
27 countries attended the open house at
Trebsen / Germany based Mondi on 11th
and 12th October 2011 and were able to
witness what is likely to be the most
important innovation in the multiwall
industry since the introduction of NC
technology.
A well-chosen production program, a
highly competent team and, not least,
convenient travel connection from / to
Leipzig airport made the Mondi facilities in
Trebsen on the Mulde an ideal location for
hosting the market launch of W & H's new
generation technology. The digital pasting
technology has been available in the
multiwall industry since 2008, when it was
� rst implemented in the AD 8330 bottomer,
and has since met with enthusiasm with
customers around the world. After applying
the new technology also to the tuber, there
is now available a complete paper sack line
that does away with the need for glue
change parts. Add to this the bene� t that
EASY-FLOW, the innovative smart tube
storage and conveyance system, serves as
a bracket embracing the AM 8135 tuber,
the AD 8330 bottomer and the ARCOMAT
3 robot palletizer to make them a fully
integrated production line.
THE MOST IMPORTANT
INNOVATION IN THE
MULTIWALL INDUSTRY SINCE
THE INTRODUCTION OF
NC TECHNOLOGY
Reduced pre-production requirements,
shorter change-over time, and improved
product quality are the success criteria of
the nozzle pasting system, resulting in
enhanced productivity and � exibility as well
as faster availability and response of the
entire multiwall system. Thousands of
paste pads and cross pasting plates,
formerly indispensable for the production
of sacks, are now no longer needed.
By the same token, the arrival of digital
pasting technology allows already available
digitally functioning electronic sections of
the machine controller, the drives, and the
CNC size change system to be interlinked
to an integrated system with a view to
exploiting even more potential for process
simpli� cation and increased ef� ciency. This
is achieved by electronically interlinking the
tuber, the storage
conveyors, the
bottomer, and the
palletizer via a local
area network (LAN),
eliminating the need for
multiple input of product and
order speci� cations by the operator as well
as for altering process data.
While watching the live demonstration,
visitors were able to see how much the
digital pasting technology does improve
everyday work and processes at the sack
factory. In addition to the mentioned
advantages, the new technology allows for
new solutions in terms of sack styles and
constructions, such as more ef� cient air
evacuation and an easier method of gluing
in � lm liners. For all pasting operations
demonstrated at the open house, absolute
precision of the paste pattern was
achieved, even at the amazing production
speed of 360 sacks / min.
An all-new feature, which many visitors had
not obviously seen before, turned out to be
the EASY-FLOW operator interface.
Providing fully automatic tube storage
management functions, the system goes
far beyond what the known
TRANSYSTEMS material � ow automation
system can do. Whilst the previous
concept requires the bottomer to be
slowed down or even stopped as the tube
level decreases, EASY-FLOW automatically
requests the tuber to produce faster, i. e.
more tubes. Conversely, the bottomer is
signalled to speed up, as the tube storage
level increases. EASY-FLOW also takes
into account imminent roll changes or
planned production interruptions, such as
for clean-up. In addition, the system
supports the operator during job changeovers
by providing, e. g., a graphic
representation of storage allocation for the
speci� c job being run. In this way
EASY -FLOW provides perfect transpa rency
of the production status of the complete
line, while at the same time optimizing the
material � ow and minimizing waste
produced.

the trouble-free and smooth start-up of the
highly sophisticated new production
line.“We are impressed with the outstanding
performance of the line from the
moment it went on stream”, says
Alexander Fink. “In the � rst six month of
production we were even able to achieve a
new world record during an 8-hour shift.”

CHINA TAKES ENVIRONMENT ISSUES SERIOUSLY
China has been suffering increasingly from
the implications of unabated economic
expansion. As a response to a waning
quality of life, politics is constantly getting
under growing pressure from the
population to address the
problems of pollution and
wastage of resources. Almost
unnoticed by the Western
public, a number of signi� cant
measures have since been
initiated, such as a scheme to
shut down inef� cient obsolescent
cement factories. It is planned that
one third of these plants will disappear by
the year 2015. The Middle Kingdom has
been making active efforts for some time
past with a view to putting in place big
modern energy-ef� cient and, consequently,
clean cement factories. Closely
connected to this policy is the shifting of
cement packaging to more compliant
valve sacks – a trend that is re� ected in a
number of investments in state-of-the-art
woven fabric and paper sack lines from
W & H.
Another facet regarding the same complex
of issues was addressed at the China
Green Printing Summit 2012 that was held
in Beijing on 12th and 13th January this
year. About 50 scientists, association
represen tatives and experts from the
industry were discussing questions of
ecologically compatible printing, including
means to improve production ef� ciency

OHG is a prosperous medium-size family
run enterprise that was founded back in
1889. According to the company's
maxim“Cultivating Tradition Means

Neemann, member of board.“The machine
features a number of speci� c components
that are being used for the � rst time and
by reducing the usage of ink, substrate
material and energy, as well as the
possibility of reducing exhaust air and
noise, available recycling capabilities, and
a lot more. W & H took advantage of this
opportunity to present its competence in
the area of energy-ef� cient engineering
and production technologies, highlighting
its GREENOVATION initiative and the
possibilities it offers to contribute towards
solving some of the pressing problems

Following extensive comparison tests,
NEEMANN decided to prefer the
VISTAFLEX CL 10 to a conventional sleeve
press.“With the aid of VISTA-PORT, job
change-overs on such a big 10-colour
press are made much faster, easier and
safer”, says printshop manager Manfred
Hüttemeier, adding“ … and the print quality,
because of highly sturdy cylinder bases
and directly mounted sleeves without
adapters, is just out of the ordinary. You
won't notice any vibration or wobbling
whatsoever!”
In addition to excellent print quality,
NEEMANN was giving priority to two other
factors, as we learn from Wilfried Hoppen,
technical manager:“Reduced set-up time
and maximum energy ef� ciency were also
of paramount importance to our investment
decision.” VISTA-PORT, exclusively
available for use with the VISTAFLEX, in
conjunction with the incorporated EASY
modules allow for an automation level and
set-up speed so far unknown.
The machine went on stream in Leer just
before the publication of this EXTRA, and
print results so far clearly testify to the fact
that when opting for the VISTAFLEX CL 10,
NEEMANN made the right choice.

OF APPLES AND PEARS
Embedded in the enchanting mountain
region north-west of Tokyo and in the
midst of a huge orchard is located the
generously styled modern factory of
Kobayashi Bag Co., Ltd., equipped with a
MIRAFLEX CM 8 that went on stream not
long ago. The idyllic location matches the
business of Kobayashi (translated“small
grove”), which essentially consists of small
bags to protect the apples and pears
growing on the trees against pests.
With the purchase of a MIRAFLEX CM 8
featuring a printing width of 1.270 mm,
MIRAFLEX ON THE SILK ROAD
Gansu Jiarong, leading packaging manufacturer
based in Western China, can
rightly boast a quite extraordinary location,
the factory being located in Dunhuang, an
ancient oasis city in the midst of desert
regions.“You can really see the sand dunes
of the Taklamakan desert right away from
the city”, says Klaus Meyer, Managing
Director / W & H Asia, adding“Dunhuang
was an important stop on the old Silk Road
and the centre of trading between China
and its western neighbours.”
Maintaining this tradition, our customer
Gansu Jiarong added the � fth W & H
machine to its equipment, a
MIRAFLEX CM 8 which has since been
successfully commissioned. Gansu
Jiarong is the region's biggest exporter
and delivers most of its products, mainly
carrier bags, to Russia, Kazakhstan and
Kyrgyzstan.
“The beginning of our business relations
with Gansu Jiarong dates back to 2003”,
recalls Klaus Meyer.“Back then, the
Kobayashi Bag Mfg. Co., Ltd.
company purchased two POLYREX 85 BV
for making patch reinforced carrier bags.”
The Chinese packaging manufacturer
proved to be a loyal customer, keeping
investing in other equipment from W & H in
the subsequent years. With a view to
extending the extrusion business, two
VAREX 3-layer blown � lm lines were
installed, both equipped with OPTIFIL P2K
process automation and FILMATIC S dual
winder for maximum � lm as well as � lm roll
quality.
With the installation of MIRAFLEX CM 8, an
8-colour central impression � exo press,
Gansu Jiarong has recently updated its
printing division to the latest technology
level. EASY-SET, EASY-REG and the
TURBOCLEAN automatic wash-up system
are but a few of the technical highlights of
the � exo press, which is capable of
speeds up to 500 m / min.
“As a result of a constantly diversifying
product range and increasing demands by
our customers, our expectations relative to
Kobayashi has opted for the currently
most successful W & H � exographic
printing press world-wide. In addition to
state-of-the-art equipment of the press
with the latest automation modules such
as EASY-SET and EASY-REG for automatic
impression and register setting, the
automatic ink wash-up system
TURBOCLEAN, corona treatment, and
web and impression cylinder cleaning
capability, Mr. Yuji Kobayashi, Managing
Director of Kobayashi Seitai Co.,Ltd. had
stressed the priority of the following
requirement being met:“Our products are
intended for food packaging applications.
That's why we need to make sure the fruit,
the Hamburger, or the French fries won't
be subject to contact with any solvent
production capacity and quality have
grown analogously”, says President Liu
Shengrong.“In the area of printing we were
facing bottlenecks over and again. We
consider the W & H MIRAFLEX to be the
best � exographic printing machine
currently available in the market place.
Owing to its performance capability and
reliability we were able to successfully
overcome the bottlenecks in our printing
division”, says Mr. Liu, expressing his
satisfaction to have opted for the right
equipment.

“This was the most successful event we
ever had so far”, this is how W & H
Managing Director Peter Steinbeck
summarizes the positive results following
the 8th Gravure Roadshow under the
heading Image-to-Print which took place
in Jakarta in late November 2011.“We
were seeing a very good response, with
more than 200 experts attending the event,
including all important package printers
from Indonesia”, adds Kai Schäperklaus,
General Manager W & H Asia-Paci� c.
To present, more than 800 printers and
gravure experts from about 500
companies attended the technology and
innovation days in East Europe, South
Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East
in order to learn more about the latest
developments in the � eld of gravure
printing as well as the competences of the
four Image-to-Print partners Sun
Chemical, Janoschka, Nordmecchanica,
and W & H, the information scope
encompassing printing inks, gravure
cylinders, and gravure printing and
laminating machines.
The uncontested highlight of the latest
roadshow event in Jakarta was, no doubt,
the demonstration of an 8-colour
HELIOSTAR SH gravure press on the
premises of PT. Indokonverta Indah,
featuring the machine running at maximum
production speed. The Indonesian gravure
printers were intrigued with the outstanding
print quality reached at a production speed
of 400 m / min. and were not less
impressed with the technical performance
capability of the HELIOSTAR SH.
With the installation of the HELIOSTAR SH,
the packaging manufacturer, based in
Bogor near Jakarta, owns the � rst state -
of-the-art W & H gravure press in the
gravure-dominated Indonesian packaging
market.

“Folplast made a good choice already two
times, why take a risk the third time?” This
was the brief answer by András Kocsis,
owner and Managing Director of Hungary
based Folplast Kft., when asked what made
them buy three W & H VAREX blown � lm
lines within no more than six years.“We
knew both the machine manufacturer
Windmöller & Hölscher and the equipment,
and this was the key point for us to order a
VAREX at three successive K trade shows.”
Founded in Lajosmizse in 1995, Folplast
Kft. is a 100 percent privately owned
company processing over 10,000 tons of

prospering Indonesian � lm manufacturer
can be therefore regarded as a pioneer in
the country's industry. Based on the good
cooperation of PT. Primajaya Eratama with
W & H Asia Paci� c and the local W & H
agency PT. Rieckermann Indonesia, the
equipment was successfully commissioned
in August last year and has since been
state-of-the-art equipment from
Windmöller & Hölscher”, recalls Reinhard
Elting, W & H Sales Manager / Eastern
Europe. At that time, company owner Juri
Fendel decided to purchase a
PRIMAFLEX 8-colour � exographic
printing press along with a VAREX 3-layer
blown � lm line, with another 3-layer
VAREX having been added in 2011.
Today, the ambitious company is
producing about 700 tons of � nished
product each month, mainly intended for
packaging applications such as for food
and sanitary articles, stretch hoods and
other PE based products, which are
delivered to all renowned food producers
operating satisfactorily.
“Having thoroughly studied the technologies
of various machine suppliers, we eventually
decided to go for W & H”, says President
Director Tjen Fa Sen, adding:“Besides the
good reputation W & H's VAREX is enjoying
in the marketplace, it was the equipment of
the OPTIMEX with � eld-proven modules
from the VAREX range that convinced us.”
The blown � lm line at PT. Primajaya Eratama
features the OPTIFIL P2K � lm gauge
controller, the MULTICOOL air ring and the
new FILMATIC O winder, which guarantees
perfect quality � lm rolls even at maximum
line output rates of up to 450 kg / h.

Looking back on the smooth installation
and commissioning of the equipment,
Folplast Kft. makes a point of
complimenting the W & H service team on
the excellent work done on site.“Start-up of
the VAREX went like ‘Pöc-Röf’, as we
would put it in Hungary”, recalls the
company owner, indicating that the line
went on stream at the push of a button.
That's how it should be!
Apart from this, the EASY-CHANGE
automation module has proved to be of
special bene� t, since it permits very fast
size changeover of the line.“Since we are
handling a highly diversi� ed product range,
our OPTIMEX needs to be changed over to
a different product several times a day. With
EASY-CHANGE all components integrated
with the automation system are adjusted
fully automatically. This saves us about
100 kg of resin on each change-over”,
says Mr. Tjen Fa Sen with satisfaction, a
statement that underlines the fact that
pro� tability and conservation of resources
are not mutually exclusive.
