The Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on the<br />
Status <strong>of</strong> Women (CACSW) met this November 3, <strong>2008</strong><br />
to discuss issues related to women at UCSB. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
Hsiu-Zu Ho, the Chair <strong>of</strong> the Committee, convened the<br />
meeting.<br />
The CACSW advises the Chancellor regarding<br />
women on campus <strong>and</strong> makes recommendations<br />
designed to make the campus environment at UCSB<br />
a friendly <strong>and</strong> hospitable one. Some <strong>of</strong> the tasks the<br />
CACSW performs include:<br />
• Analyzes data provided about the status <strong>of</strong> women<br />
by appropriate <strong>of</strong>fices such as Budget <strong>and</strong> Planning,<br />
Graduate Division <strong>and</strong> financial Aid Office (students);<br />
Human Resources <strong>and</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Equal Opportunity<br />
staff); <strong>and</strong> <strong>Academic</strong> Personnel (faculty).<br />
• Consults with Senior Officers to underst<strong>and</strong> their<br />
perceptions <strong>of</strong> the problems <strong>of</strong> attracting <strong>and</strong> retaining<br />
women scholars <strong>and</strong> employees.<br />
• Makes recommendations to the Chancellor on actions<br />
that could be taken to improve the status <strong>of</strong> women<br />
on campus.<br />
Membership consists <strong>of</strong> twelve members with<br />
the membership distributed among faculty (5), staff (5)<br />
<strong>and</strong> students (2).The first meeting reviewed what had<br />
been done in the past with respect to recommendations<br />
to the Chancellor <strong>and</strong> proposed a future meeting date in<br />
the spring to discuss pending recommendations from<br />
previous years <strong>and</strong> the progress made on campus with<br />
respect to women on campus.<br />
