Our Mission 

LOFT Community Services offers recovery and independence for the most 

vulnerable, including those with mental and physical health challenges, addiction 

issues, the homeless, the abused and the abandoned. Our services provide 

supportive housing and community support services and respond to the changing 

needs of our diverse community. 

LOFT is a values-driven organization with a deep belief in the resilience of the 

human spirit; that each person has the ability to grow and change and that each 

person deserves the opportunity to do so. LOFT embraces the individual 

needs and aspirations of each client and encourages the development of 

communities of mutual support within our programs to enable each 

client to attain his or her potential. 

LOFT takes risks to reach out to those most in need, including people with multiple 

challenges who are often considered hard-to-serve and too often fall through the cracks 

as a result. We believe we make our best contribution to the community when we not 

only continue to provide our core services, but also identify gaps in existing services 

and develop programs to reach out to people who cannot get the help they need. 

The LOFT Name: LOFT stands for “Leap of Faith Together”. Our name refers to our 

philosophy of taking risks and reaching out in response to unmet and emerging needs. 

It also refers to the leap of faith our clients take when they join our programs and take 

the risk of believing that things can improve for them, and that recovery is possible.

Welcome to our 2012/13 Report to the Community. We have had a busy and 

interesting year, and we are excited to share some highlights with you. 

We also want to take this opportunity to express our deep gratitude for the support 

of our wonderful donors. Over the past year, LOFT has truly lived its mantra of 

filling the gaps and reaching out to serve those most in need. This has meant taking 

some calculated risks – LOFT’s characteristic “Leap of Faith Together” – something 

that is only possible because our donors are willing to take that chance with us. 

For example, this year we have embraced opportunities to fill the gap in services for 

seniors with mental health and addiction issues in York Region and South Simcoe. 

We are playing a lead role in developing a mobile outreach program for seniors and 

have launched a dynamic new seniors supportive housing program in Bradford. 

In Toronto, we are pressing ahead to expand our services to youth aged 18 to 24, 

who are falling into the void that exists between children’s and adults’ mental health 

services. This has included extending our addiction services for youth as well as a 

promising partnership with Native Child and Family Services to serve aboriginal youth. 

In the pages that follow, you will also read about the important role that peer 

support plays in our work. The term “peer support” recognizes the significant 

impact of people with lived experience of mental health or substance abuse 

issues supporting one another. At LOFT, peer support has been integral to our 

programming for more than 25 years, in our peer support housing and social 

activities like congregate dining, bus trips, and our LOFT Seniors’ Bowling League, 

that give clients opportunities to come together as a community. Peer advisory 

groups help programs remain effective and responsive to clients’ needs. 

During the past year, we have added another facet by employing trained 

professional Peer Support Workers. LOFT is especially fortunate that the support of 

our donors allows us to provide a wide range of peer supports such as these. 

In fact, LOFT’s name says it well: when we take a “Leap of Faith,” it is usually better 

when we do it “Together.” So it seemed appropriate to focus this year’s report on 

peer support at LOFT, and the fact that “We’re Better Working Together.” 

Thank you again for your support of our clients, and for being by our side as, 

together, we serve the most vulnerable among us. We hope you enjoy this year’s

Greater Independence 

Descriptions of LOFT and LOFT programs always 

include a lot of information about services: the 

different types of services offered, the philosophy 

behind the services, the impact of these services on 

the service users. 

It would be quite accurate to say that one of 

LOFT’s goals is to ensure each client has access 

to all the services needed. It would be wrong, 

however, to think that this is the only goal. In 

fact, LOFT’s ultimate goal is for each client to 

need reduced services or no services at all. Some 

clients are dealing with issues that will always 

need some level of support, but even so, greater 

independence is possible and desirable. 

Clients can play an important role in supporting 

each other on the journey to recovery. Seeing 

people around you with experiences similar to 

yours, who are doing well and recovering their 

health, can inspire hope and lead to greater 

independence. 

Embracing Individuality 

At LOFT, each individual matters. Each person has 

the ability to grow and change, and each person’s 

journey of recovery is uniquely their own. At LOFT, 

we respect each person as an individual, and we 

respect their right to manage their own recovery. 

LOFT has long understood that in order for 

recovery to really begin, a person needs to feel 

accepted and valued. Negative responses by 

neighbours, other people in the community or 

even by strangers, not only cause hurt, but can 

undermine the sense of hope that is so important 

in recovery. 

At LOFT, each person is on a journey to recover 

their health, dignity, hope and independence. Each 

journey is supported not only by support workers 

and other LOFT staff, but also by other clients – 

their fellow travelers. 

Filling the Gaps 

At LOFT, we look for the gaps in service and reach out 

to those who fall through the cracks. This is LOFT’s 

mantra and the meaning behind our name. “LOFT” 

stands for “Leap of Faith Together.” 

A couple of years ago, LOFT used the expertise of 

McEwan Housing and Support Services to reach 

out to a population of un-served HIV+ men and 

women. McEwan serves people with mental health 

and addiction issues and histories of homelessness 

who are also HIV+. The gap existed for an 

especially hard-to-serve group: long-term homeless 

men and women whose mental and physical health 

issues were so severe that existing services simply 

could not help. 

Our project took an innovative, collaborative, 

intensive and highly personalized approach with 

outstanding results. 

Healthier Communities 

One of the elements that contribute to improving 

mental, physical and spiritual health is access to a 

community of mutual support. 

Everyone from business guru Tom Peters to 

pioneering anthropologist Margaret Meade has 

weighed in on the subject of human need. All agree 

that once our basic physiological needs are met; air, 

water, food, clothing and shelter, and we are not 

in any imminent physical danger, we all share two 

great needs. We need to be needed; we need to 

feel we belong and that we make a contribution to 

someone else’s life, and we need to be valued and 

respected by ourselves and by others. 

Being a member of a community fills both 

these needs, especially when the community 

is welcoming and supportive. LOFT has long 

recognized the importance of supporting and 

encouraging community-building within and 

around each program. Within each community, 

clients have a sense of belonging and play a 

role in supporting each other.

Shawn’s Story

I came to LOFT in 2010 and I want to share 

with you how this came to be; a man suffering 

with a mental illness whose life was changed by 

genuine care and consistent regard. 

I became a homeless street kid at 16, in and out 

of hostels, including living for a time at LOFT’s 

Beverley Lodge. At 19 I discovered my gift in 

music and I used music as a way of escaping. I 

graduated in social work in 1999 and attended 

performing arts school. I worked in social work 

and recorded music. I was signed to an indie 

label and my Christmas CD in 2007 got airplay in 

12 countries. 

Fast forward to 2010; the year when I lost 

everything to a massive psychotic break. I spent 

four months in maximum security prison for 

issuing threats. I arrived on the doorstep at 

LOFT’s Mental Health and Justice Initiative with 

nothing but a diagnosis and a criminal record, 

and I was invited in with open arms. It was more 

than simply housing. LOFT helped me get my 

life back in order and gave me hope that I could 

carry on and do more than just survive. 

Being a Peer Support Worker is first and 

foremost a responsibility to take care of myself; 

making sure of my medication, making sure I 

have a circle of care in my own life before I can 

actually deliver any service to clients. 

It is a huge, miraculous step in my recovery. You 

wonder how you will be able to get back on 

your feet and get it together again. Then LOFT 

offered this opportunity and it was more than just 

a job, it was a chance at a second life. 

It was risky for me to trust again and to believe 

that I had the ability to get back into the field 

again, and to take a chance on myself and 

believe again. But it’s a huge risk for LOFT, 

too, because peer support work is such a new 

venture right across the sector. Breaking new 

ground with somebody who is a client is quite 

risky. You have to really believe in someone to 

actually have that happen. 

I am leading four recovery groups in four different 

locations. I follow a structured curriculum that 

takes at least thirty-six weeks to complete. The 

participants get assignments and homework to 

do. They don’t just show up and sit there. They 

are actively involved. They talk about it changing 

their lives. 

I feel it’s important that the person leading this 

type of group has lived experience. When I 

talk about having bipolar disorder and schizoaffective 

disorder and things like that, it just 

normalizes things and they feel free to talk about 

their disorders and their challenges, things they 

wouldn’t normally talk about. They feel that 

here’s somebody who’s been there himself and 

has to take pills, deal with the system, absolutely! 

I am totally and completely in the system. By 

being there, I show them that once you get past 

your addictions and your challenges, you can 

make a contribution. 

I feel very, very humble to be part of the Peer 

Support Program in its infancy. It will be cool to 

see what it becomes in five years. LOFT is living 

what they say they are doing. If I wasn’t living 

proof that it’s happening, I wouldn’t be saying 

it. I wake up every morning and there I am, 

surrounded by LOFT all day. And it’s no bad thing.

Bradford House is LOFT’s newest assisted 

living program for at-risk seniors, launched 

this year in downtown Bradford, Ontario.

Lynn’s Story 

It is very important to have a community. If you 

don’t you are isolating yourself. I have done 

that most of my life. I was in and out of the 

hospital all the time, so I didn’t have any friends 

and I barely knew my family. It was really hard. I 

tried a couple of times to end my life because I 

was so sad and alone. And when I got married, 

my husband died and I had to raise my kids on 

my own and that was hard. 

Thirteen years ago, I went to the hospital 

because I was dying. The hospital saved my 

life, and then I went right to a homeless shelter. 

The homeless shelter was really hard. Then I 

went into a group home. I was living out in the 

boonies. There was nothing around. 

I would stay in bed for days. Not eating, not 

taking my medication and just going downhill. 

LOFT has helped me in a lot of ways, it got me 

interested in reading again and drawing and 

going out and talking to people. 

When there are new residents, they always ask 

me to speak to them. 

Spina bifida is a genetic mishap. It’s a possibility 

if the mother drinks; also with the “morning 

after” pill. I got the whole shebang from my 

mother: the drinking, the smoking, the pill, 

everything was stacked against me. 

I had limited literacy skills most of my life, partly 

because I was in the hospital so much when I 

was young. I regretted my education, so when 

I found out about a literacy program, I went. It 

takes a lot of courage to go back to school as 

an adult. I became a real reader. 

Now, I am teaching myself how to read again. 

When I had my bad period I stopped reading 

completely for a good three years. I wrote in 

a journal and I stopped doing that. And since 

I’ve been here I’ve been reading, I’ve been 

journaling and I’ve been happy. And I draw. 

Pat, another resident, taught me how to draw. 

Pat showed me some of her art work and it got 

me thinking. And she got me an art book and 

some pencils and I just went at it. 

That’s part of being in a community. They 

understand and I’m not afraid to talk about 

myself. They are standing behind me and 

that’s a good feeling, to know there are people 

behind me and I’m not alone. 

I’m feeling good. I feel better about myself. 

I’m getting into the swing of life again. I’m 

glad I’m here. 


Report on 2012/13 

We are pleased to report on five major 

planning and operational priorities 

from LOFT’s Business Plan for 2012/13. 

1. Implementation of a new community 

supportive housing program for seniors in 

York Region/South Simcoe Region. 

LOFT seniors supportive housing programs 

have shown that seniors with multiple mental 

and physical health challenges remain not only 

happier, but also healthier in the community, 

where they can maintain their dignity and 

independence with proper support. Hospitals 

or long-term care homes should not be the only 

answer for seniors with disabilities, nor are they 

always the best answer. 

Funding received in 2012 enabled LOFT to 

reach out and, for the first time, to offer this 

type of program to seniors in York Region/ 

South Simcoe. The Ministry of Health, through 

the Central Local Health Integration Network 

(LHIN), provided funding for support services, 

but there was no government funding program 

to help obtain the housing that is desperately 

needed by vulnerable seniors. 

LOFT took a “leap of faith” and used charitable 

funds to purchase an old nursing home in 

Bradford. Renamed Bradford House, it will soon 

become home for 55 older adults and seniors 

from York Region and South Simcoe. 

2. To create a ‘Stepping Stone’-style transitional 

housing program in a LOFT residence in 

Stouffville. 

Since 2009, The Stepping Stone Program has 

been part of John Gibson House, one of our 

seniors supportive housing programs in Toronto. 

Stepping Stone provides specialized transitional 

housing and support services and 

short-term housing to help older adults and 

seniors who have been hospitalized to make the 

transition back into community living. 

Stepping Stone provides benefits all around. 

Clients are able to get back on their feet and 

recover their ability to live independently after 

hospitalization, more hospital beds are freed 

up for people in need, and LOFT’s cost of $49/ 

day compared to $600 - $1,000/day in hospital 

represents a huge saving to the health care 

system. 

Thanks to new funding from the Central 

LHIN, a similar program is now in the works 

in a LOFT-owned residence in Stouffville. The 

new program will help people of all ages with 

mental health challenges make the transition 

from hospital back to independence in the 

community. 

3. To lead the Behavioural Supports Ontario 

(BSO) program in York Region/South Simcoe. 

Behavioural Supports Ontario is a provincewide 

initiative of the Ministry of Health aimed at 

offering a timely and knowledgeable response 

for seniors, their families and caregivers, who 

live and cope with behaviours associated with 

dementia, mental illness, addictions and other 

neurological conditions. The goal is to reduce 

unnecessary hospitalization for people living 

either at home or in long-term care homes. 

Through our new Behavioural Support Services 

– Mobile Support Teams, LOFT is now offering 

this service for people in need in North York, 

York Region and South Simcoe. The teams took 

their first client in June 2012, and as of May 1, 

2013 have assisted 439 clients and their families 

and care givers. We expect this number to come 

closer to 800 clients in 2013/14, the program’s 

first full year of operation.

housing, assistance with activities of 

daily living, a full meal program, and a 

range of support services to assist clients 

in their journeys toward recovery and 

independence. 

Conway’s Story 

I didn’t understand what was happening when, 

in my late teens/early twenties, I found myself 

unable to continue my studies at Wilfrid Laurier 

University. I moved home and, after a year of 

social withdrawal, was sent to hospital because 

of my increasingly strange behaviour. I received a 

diagnosis of schizophrenia. 

There, my delusions took over to the point that I 

damaged my own eyes so badly I was essentially 

blinded and spent two months in physical 

restraints. Gradually I was able to disentangle 

my thoughts, surgery restored much of my vision 

and after another eight months I was ready for 

an out-patient program. 

The warmth of the staff and the charms of my 

soon-to-be roommate left me in little doubt that 

St. George House was a place that could help 

me make the transition to more independent 

living. I came to appreciate St. George House as 

a support community … but I was the youngest 

member of the house, and I still had hopes and 

dreams. 

I have moved on now to totally independent 

living at York University where I am going into my 

second year studying English and am a member 

of the Golden Key International Honours Society. 

Like all things, I think the key to success is having 

a support network, and to take things one day at 

a time. 

I very much look forward to helping out at 

St. George House this summer in a volunteer 

capacity.

4. Expand the Ingles House youth addiction program 

and serve more transitional age youth (age 18 – 24). 

Generous donor support received in late 2011, was put 

to work in 2012 to expand Ingles Housing and Support 

Services. Ingles has long been Toronto’s only clean and 

dry housing program for young women recovering 

from addictions. This special donor funding has truly 

transformed the program, enabling it to expand 

beyond the walls of Ingles House to include more 

housing as well as support for women living elsewhere 

in the community. 

The Ingles expansion fit perfectly into LOFT’s longerterm 

vision to develop its services for youth age 18 to 

24, especially where complex addiction and mental 

health issues are present. The mandate for children’s 

mental health services ends when youth turn 18. The 

expectation is that at 18, they will transition to adult 

mental health services, yet services for adults are not 

geared to serve youth. The result is a huge service gap 

where far too many of these transitional age young 

people are lost. 

All told, over the course of the past year, the number 

of young people served by LOFT youth programs has 

increased from 128 in 2011/12 to 215. We are nowhere 

near filling the need, but we are forging a path and 

proving what works, and this priority will continue. 

5. Continue active involvement in partnerships and 

networks to serve more youth, adults and seniors. 

LOFT is a strong believer that a collaborative approach 

can sometimes provide the best response to the needs 

of clients, especially for clients with complex or multiple 

challenges. LOFT actively supports and participates in a 

number of networks where agencies have joined together 

to learn from each other in order to improve services. 

In one such partnership new in the past year, LOFT 

joined forces with Native Child and Family Services 

to support their provision of services to transitional 

age aboriginal youth with mental health issues. The 

partnership will combine LOFT’s extensive experience 

serving transitional age youth with mental health 

challenges and of the requirements of today’s health 

care system, with Native Child’s knowledge of native 

cultural traditions, support services and spirituality. 

LOFT led in the 2008 founding of Coordinated 

Access to Supportive Housing (CASH), a network of 

31 adult mental health supportive housing providers 

in Toronto. LOFT continues to lead in the operation 

of this network that provides a single point of access 

to some 4,500 housing units and has dramatically 

simplified the process of applying for housing. This year 

CASH merged with another network coordinating case 

management resources, to further streamline access to 

services for people in need.
