2. Damage
Newly hatched larvae aggregate, burrow into leaf
sheathes, and cause leaf sheathes to become dry ( 枯
鞘 ). Larvae at and/or beyond their second instar do
different damage at different plant stages. During
the tillering stage, they burrow into stems and cause
the seedlings to dry up or die ( 枯 心 苗 ); during the
booting stage, the bootings to die ( 死 孕 穗 ); during
the heading stage, heads to become white ( 白 穗 );
during the mature stage, the plants to be damaged
( 虫 伤 株 ).
