RULES AND GENERAL GUIDELINES<br />

To enter this competition please read the following Rules and Guidelines:<br />

1. The <strong>American</strong> <strong>Batik</strong> <strong>Design</strong> <strong>Competition</strong> is an open competition intended to draw<br />

from among <strong>American</strong> citizens diverse talents in fabric, graphic art and fashion<br />

design, to put on display new and original designs that allow the <strong>American</strong> spirit<br />

and values to shine through, while still recognizing uniqueness in the <strong>Batik</strong> motif.<br />

2. The phrase “<strong>American</strong> <strong>Batik</strong>” is a term attempting to illustrate and describe such<br />

creative designs and fashion ideas that remain influenced by typical Indonesian<br />

<strong>Batik</strong> motifs, and are bound to incorporate two criteria: (a) they have to be<br />

designed by <strong>American</strong> designers; and (b) they exhibit the <strong>American</strong> spirit and<br />

values, drawing from its history and folklore.<br />

3. The theme of the competition is “The Spirit of America in the Heritage of <strong>Batik</strong>”.<br />

The competition encourages the articulation of cultural fusion between United<br />

States’ and Indonesian cultures through batik. It’s aimed at bringing <strong>American</strong><br />

stories and spirit to Indonesia and introducing Indonesia’s cultural heritage to the<br />

U.S.<br />

4. All U.S. citizens, 18 years of age (by February <strong>2013</strong>) and above, who have an<br />

interest or a background in design ‐‐ professional and amateur fashion, graphic,<br />

and textile design‐‐ are welcome to participate in this competition.<br />

5. Participants of this competition will be asked to create a digital design only. The<br />

designs will be transformed into hand‐made batik cloths (kain panjang) done by<br />

Indonesian batik artists in Indonesia.<br />

6. Winners of this competition will maintain their rights to their designs, but the<br />

organizers will have the right to use the designs for non‐commercial purposes<br />

(e.g. for publication or press releases).<br />

WHAT TO SUBMIT<br />

7. Each participant is to submit a DESIGN ONLY, not a piece of batik textile.<br />

8. The design submitted must be original and it must never have been published<br />

before. The committee has the right to cancel participation if this is not the case.<br />

9. The batik design must reflect an <strong>American</strong> context or values (e.g. but not limited<br />

to: <strong>American</strong> history, traditions or symbols).<br />

10. <strong>Design</strong>:<br />

a. PDF format only, with a maximum of 10MB, at least 300dpi resolution.<br />

b. Dimension: The final size of the design should reflect the scale of a <strong>Batik</strong><br />

cloth/kain panjang or Sarong.<br />

o Dimension for batik cloth/kain panjang is 250cm x 105cm or 98.5<br />

inches x 41 inches<br />

Dimension for Sarong is 225cm x 105cm or 88.5 inches x 41 inches<br />

c. Contents:<br />

o The main motif.<br />

o Other details of the design (e.g. borders and other details).<br />

o A complete image (final lay out) of the design including the main motif<br />

and other details. The complete image should reflect the scale of a<br />

batik cloth/kain batik or sarong.<br />

d. Use CMYK color management, with a maximum of five colors (does not<br />

include white, if white is the base color). Please specify the color series.<br />

11. Conceptual meaning/philosophy of the design<br />

Please provide an explanation of the conceptual meaning/philosophy of the<br />

design and its correlation with <strong>American</strong> values and spirit (download template<br />

here).<br />

12. <strong>Design</strong>s will be judged based on:<br />

• Creativity‐‐innovative approach, uniqueness;<br />

• Color range;<br />

• Images;<br />

• Composition;<br />

• Technical feasibility;<br />

• Contextual meaning of <strong>American</strong> values; and<br />

• Inclusion of Indonesian batik influence.<br />

13. Along with the design, please also submit below items to<br />

batik@embassyofindonesia.org. Maximum size of all attachments in one email is<br />

25MB. Email with attachments more that 25MB will not be able to get through.<br />

• A completed ENTRY FORM (in PDF format) and save it in format:<br />

yourname_batik<strong>2013</strong>.pdf.<br />

• A short biography (no more than 300 words) in DOC (Microsoft Word) format<br />

(download template here).<br />

• Provide a headshot photo in. High resolution is preferred with maximum of<br />

3MB.<br />

IMPORTANT NOTES<br />

14. <strong>Design</strong>s with religious or political symbols will not be accepted.<br />

15. One participant can only submit one batik digital design. Team participation is<br />

allowed, but will be considered as one participant.<br />

16. Three First Place Winners of the 2011 <strong>Competition</strong> cannot participate in <strong>2013</strong><br />

<strong>Competition</strong> and future <strong>Competition</strong>s.<br />

17. Staff members and their family of the organizers (the Embassy of Indonesia, the<br />

Indonesian Consulate Generals in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco,<br />

or New York) and their families are not allowed to enter this <strong>Competition</strong>.<br />

DEADLINE<br />

18. Closing date of submission will be July 12, <strong>2013</strong>, 12.00 pm EST.<br />

19. Finalists will be notified and contacted through the email address submitted in<br />

the Entry Form.<br />

DISCLAIMER<br />

21. By entering this competition, entrants agree to allow to the Organizers to use any<br />

entry images in print or electronic publication and in press releases sent to<br />

media.<br />

22. Materials supplied as part of this competition will not be returned. Copyright or<br />

patent protection is the responsibility of entrants.<br />

23. All related prize tax will be of the responsibility of winners.<br />

24. The decision by the Judges and Committee is final.<br />
