OVERVIEW OF SERVICES<br />

THE ROLE OF THE COUNSELOR<br />

Academic Improvement and Planning: Includes<br />

<strong>the</strong> selection <strong>of</strong> a plan <strong>of</strong> study, placement into required<br />

courses and challenging programs, attendance<br />

concerns, and study skills.<br />

Personal/Social Growth: includes counseling<br />

concerning self-esteem, developing communication<br />

skills, decision-making, and relationship-building skills.<br />

Crisis Intervention Services: includes counseling<br />

students in crisis and providing referrals as necessary.

Transitional Services: assist students with changes<br />

from grade to grade to provide a comfortable and<br />

successful learning environment.<br />

Career and Life Planning: increases student<br />

awareness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> career and educational planning<br />

process, as well as for <strong>the</strong> individual careers <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

Instills in students <strong>the</strong> values and attitudes necessary<br />

for becoming a successful contributor to <strong>the</strong>ir families<br />

and to society.


Graduation Requirements<br />

All students, including students with disabilities,<br />

must take Regents exams and complete a<br />

minimum <strong>of</strong> 22 units/credits.<br />

Students with disabilities can receive a local<br />

diploma provided <strong>the</strong>y earn a score <strong>of</strong> 55-64<br />

on <strong>the</strong> required Regents exams.<br />

General education students must earn a 65<br />

or above on <strong>the</strong> required Regents exams.

SAT/ACT:<br />

College readiness exams taken in <strong>the</strong> second semester by<br />

Juniors and <strong>the</strong> Fall as Seniors.<br />

SAT II:<br />

Individual subject area exams taken by students applying to<br />

highly competitive colleges after <strong>the</strong> completion <strong>of</strong> an AP<br />

course.

Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) is a<br />

law that went into effect on July 1, 2012.<br />

The Dignity Act prohibits <strong>the</strong><br />

harassment (including bullying and<br />

hazing) and discrimination <strong>of</strong> students by<br />

students and by school personnel<br />

All students have <strong>the</strong> right to report<br />

harassment <strong>of</strong> any sort to an adult
