To All Parents and Students:
Calhoun High School offers a wide range of Academic Honor Societies. In addition to the comprehensive National Honor
Society, we have established a range of departmental academic organizations. The following describes our school’s honor
society offerings.
National Honor Society: Ms. Rosslee, Advisor
It is both an honor and privilege to be a member of Calhoun High School’s National Honor Society. This is, in part, because
of the tremendous academic standing, flawless character, and dedicated service of those who are considered for induction into
this organization.
The initial requirement for consideration into the National Honor Society is for students to have maintained an 87.5% overall
average by the third marking period of their junior year. Those who have done so will receive notification (before the fourth
marking period begins) that they are being considered for the spring induction.
But scholarship alone does not guarantee a student a position in the National Honor Society. This is because the society is
represented by those who demonstrate flawless character as well as qualities that allow individuals to excel as leaders and
volunteers within the community. Therefore, those students who are interested in being members of the National Honor
Society must be active participants of service-related activities in the Calhoun community during their freshman, sophomore,
and junior school years. In essence, students must be actively involved in two or more clubs, teams, and/or organizations
within Calhoun High School for each year (freshman, sophomore, and junior) in order to fulfill the honor society’s service
requirement for induction. (Note: Once inducted, students must continue with their service activities in order to continue
with their membership in the society.)
If a student does not meet the requirements for induction during the spring of his/her junior year, he/she may be considered
for the fall induction ceremony, which would take place during the following semester (fall of their senior year). In order to
be reconsidered, the student must have the required average as well as the required service commitment to the community at
the time of consideration.
Once inducted, students need to maintain their membership through senior year. To do so, members must be involved in the
activities of Calhoun’s National Honor Society, accruing the necessary ‘activity points’ for retention of membership.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the National Honor Society, please feel free to contact Ms. Rosslee at
Tri-M Music Honor Society: Mr. Sardo, Mr. Tumminelli, & Mr. Sutherland,
Advisors
You’re invited to share the Tri-M Experience!
What is the Tri-M Music Honor Society? Tri-M, once named “Modern Music Masters,” is the international honor society
for music students in junior and senior high schools. It is a program of the Music Educators National Conference, an
association of over 63,000 music education professionals nationwide who realize the importance of motivating students and
recognizing musical achievements.
What does Tri-M do? Many things! Tri-M serves the school and community in various ways. Some of these may include:
sponsoring concerts by outside organizations in our school, providing ushers for school concerts, providing soloists to
perform at school events, giving solo and ensemble performances at local community organizations, honoring people in the
community for their contributions to the school music program, and much, much more!
What do I do to become a member? Tri-M is an honor society and membership does have requirements. You are required
to maintain at least a 93 average in your music courses, and at least an 87.5 (un-weighted) average overall. You must also
have been a member of your school’s performing ensembles during your entire high school career (“On Tour” members have
their freshman year waved of this requirement). Upon filling out an Application Form, you will be required to perform a
solo, duet, or small ensemble at a recital in October of next year. You will also take part in a formal membership induction
ceremony.
What else is membership based on? The logo of the Tri-M Music Honor Society includes the five lines of the music staff.
This staff represents the five major criteria for selecting new members: scholarship, character, cooperation, leadership, and
service. The design also includes a lyre and manuscript scroll, which represent proficiency and service in the field of music.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Tri-M Honor Society, please feel free to contact Sandy Sardo at Calhoun
High School.
