Election Wrap-Up
Radical Right scored success rate of over 40
Percent in state and local battles
The People For the American Way today reported that the
Radical Right racked up victories in more than 40 percent of the
state and local races where they were involved.
Key wins for the movement include:
• Defeat of the Equal Rights Amendment in Iowa,
• Overturning gay civil rights laws in Tampa and Colorado,
• Control over at least three district school boards in San
Diego County, California,
• Victories in dozens of state and local races.
People For president, Arthur J. Kropp, stated that there are
many key lessons to take away from this election:
• The Radical Right was able to 'shop' their issues in 1992,
• They learned that anti-gay campaigns worked, even in a
political year of high voter involvement which made their
"stealth" strategy of running low-profile efforts more difficult
to pull off,
• The Radical Right scored many state and local wins,
• The Radical Right is now uniquely positioned to fill the
leadership vacuum in the Republican Party,
• With Clinton in the White House as their new enemy, they
will have no trouble filling their fund-raising coffers,
• The Radical Right used the 1992 election to test the political
viability of such key goals as increased control of education
and opposition to equal treatment for gay citizens.
"We can't afford to write off the Radical Right's significant
victories in 1992," said Kropp. "We've seen that the less exposure
they receive, the more likely they are to succeed. We will continue
to monitor their activity as they build toward 1994 and 1996."
