EDITOR’S NOTE
Department of Automobile Engineering
Welcome to the Department of
Automobile Engineering. We are glad to
inform you that we have finally come out
with the first edition of the Newsletter
created by the Automobile department.
We thank our Head of the Department,
Dr. E. Ganapathy Sundaram, for giving
us this chance and for supporting us in
this initiative .
The department is gratified that for the
last three months our Automobile department
has focused on many seminars,
guest lectures, projects, placement
training, etc. The department also
hopes to conduct their first department
symposium in the 2015 odd semester.
The third and second year
students’ industrial visit to Ashok
Leyland, TI Metal forming Industry and
Delphi TVS, India’s largest manufacturer
of Fuel Injectors, gave them a
phenomenal idea about the field of
manufacturing in automobile sector.
The present third year students,
the first batch students of this
department, have recently undergone
placement training, where they were
tested and trained for aptitude test,
group discussion and HR interview.

THE GO-KART SPARTANS
The department of Automobile
engineering was involved in fabrication
of the kart for an International Go-Kart
competition and yes the excitement is
felt throughout the department. The Go-
Kart representing our college is named
the “Spartans”. The event is being
organized in Lovely Professional University,
Jalandhar, Punjab. This is claimed to
be Asia’s largest students initiated Auto-
motive event. International Go-Kart
Championship (IGC) was inaugurated
incredibly at LPU and saw tremendous
showcasing of 104 Go-Karts from
across three great nations of Asia-
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and India this
year. And out of this, after an initial
round, 52 teams where selected.

The students from third year
Automobile department participated
and triumphed at the National level
technical symposium, Quintessence
2015, organized by Easwari Engineering
college on February 23 and 24. Three
students namely Hari Prasath, Sree
Kumar, and Vijay won the First prize in
General Quiz. The same students along
with Jaya Manikandan stole away the
third prize in Robo Wars .
Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) First ever workshop
ARAI is the Research Institute
of the Automotive Industry with the
Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public
Enterprises administered by
Government of India. They provide
important R&D services like Power
train, structural dynamics, safety,
NAE, CAE, Electronics, and material
for almost every up coming and on
- road commercial vehicles in India
.
ARAI has a strong base of state
-of-the-art technology equipment,
laboratory facilities and highly qualified
and experienced personnel.

THE LEGENDARY BUGATTI IS BEATEN
It is reported that the legendry Bugatti Veyron
has been beaten by the Hennessey Venom
GT ,as the fastest road car in the world, setting
a mark of 270.49mph early in 2014. It beat the
previous title holder, the Bugatti Veyron Super
Sport, by just 0.63mph - but the record won't be
officially recorded.
Bangalore. They held a 3 days workshop on advanced automotive engineering and
how the vehicles are tested before allowing them to come into market.
At the end of the 3 days workshop an exam was conducted. The students
who cleared the examination successfully got certified with a Merit certificate. The
second year students S.S. Hemanand, Hari Haran, N. Priyadharshan, Yogeshwaran
and Ganesh Pandian participated and cleared the examination successfully.

The Department Head’s Projects
The Head of the Automobile department, Dr. E.
Ganapathy Sundaram always strives to present new
findings to the outside world. He has presented two
papers at an international conference, titled -
Experimental studies on Thermal and catalytic slow
pyrolysis of groundnut shell to pyrolytic oil and
Effect of heat capacity of basin material and glass
cover on distillate yield of single slope passive solar
still- A theoretical Investigation. These papers were
presented at SSN College Of Engineering, Mechanical
department in January 2015. He was awarded the best
paper presentation certificate in the area of
Sustainable Energy Resources, Materials and
Technologies.

More Guest lectures were conducted, on Importance
of Auto CAD/CAE, CREO, ANSYS and HYPERMESH
softwares, to throw light on the importance of these
softwares in the life of an Automobile Engineer. There
always exists a confusion regarding what course to
choose to build his resume. These lectures from the
experts working in reputed organizations, help the students
to understand their own interest and choose the
most appropriate software. Students also get an insight
into what courses to pursue to further their career in the
future.

This Go-Kart competition taking place in
Jalandhar is organized by International Go-kart
Championship (IGC). The important people behind
this IGC are Gurpreet Singh Phull, Deputy Dean,
SME and Hitesh Dhingra, Faculty advisor, LSCC,
from Lovely Professional University. The main aim
of IGC is is to bring out the students from their lecture
halls so they implement their theoretical knowledge and
use it practically with out of box ideas. Also these
techno-manager graduates get to run their go-karts on
a live arena with 10,000+ spectators watching them
with keen eyes.
The teams are provided with rule books mentioning
the requirements of the drivers, team, vehicle,
and power train. Then the vehicles are identified and
tested in qualifying rounds. In the qualifying round the
vehicle is checked for vehicle design, Gnatt chart, design
validation and even COST REPORT, where the cost
of the vehicle should not exceed more than Rs. 70000/-
excluding the safety gears.

Once the vehicle successfully passes the
qualifying round, it is then taken for the real time testing
- Dynamic testing. Brake test, acceleration test, Skid pad
test, autocross test, Endurance. During these tests the condition
is put forth that if the vehicle breaks down or stalls, the
vehicle will be removed from the track and will not be allowed
to re-enter the track.
The Champions of the International Go-karting is
awarded with Rs. 1,00,000/-, and the first runner up is
awarded Rs. 60,000/-. The winners are titled based on the
points they win in each test of the dynamic round.
The students of 2nd and 3rd year of Automobile
Engineering have teamed up with Professor S. Pradeep
Kumar as the team mentor and S. Ashwin Kugan positioned
as Team Captain. The Spartans Racing Team is made up of
20 committed members who were allocated a separate
department to facilitate the work flow. Apart from the
Technicians the two very important element for a vehicle -
Drivers position, are being taken up by Rakesh Kumar as
first driver and S. Akash Kugan. Both these drivers are
from the third year.

The Spartans have decided to power up the vehicle
with Honda Stunner’s 125cc. The stunner engine is capable
of firing up to maximum power of 10bhp @ 8000 RPM
and maximum torque of about 11Nm @ 6500 RPM. But we
can expect a decrement in these values when they are
being assembled for a kart keeping in mind the weight
factor. The engine is also claimed to run with 61 kmpl
economy with bike frame, which is also known to reduce
marginally.
Obviously even the transmission system is used
from the built in transmission system of the stunner
engine. It is a multi-plate wet type, 5 speed transmission
with normal chain drive mechanism. To use this engine
was a great idea as it is very economical in every aspect
and gives a good power torque graph.
The team says that the kart is expected to get
ready soon. “Faculties other than our team mentor helped
us out, supported and encouraged us greatly during our
tough times”, said the team. Professor Shiva Kumar
helped them in analyzing the chassis design created by the
chassis department of the Spartans team. The complexity
in building the chassis was in its weight reduction and
strength, which he supported by analyzing it every time
the team asked him to. “We are very thankful for his help.
We planned it, designed it but the analytical part was
pretty puzzling for us and this was overcome with the
assistance of Professor”, thanked Kritish, a design team
member.

Art Ingels is known as 'the
father of karting'. In 1956, while he
was a race car builder at Kurtis Kraft,
he made the first go kart out of scrap
parts and a surplus West Bend twostroke
engine. He tested it in a local
parking lot.

The spartans team has reported the completion of the engine mounting, steering mechanism, suspension and wheel
mounts successfully. Now all that’s left is wiring up the clutch mechanism, Brakes mechanism and throttle cable. For
every kart in a go-kart some innovations are expected. Similarly our college team is trying to create a pollution
control device in their kart. And something called pollution control in a racing machine is very uncommon.
This is a mission about succeeding in all arenas ; power, economy and emission factor. This is what the
team strives and works for.
It takes 8,460 bolts to assemble an automobile, and one nut to scatter it all over the road

situations and thanks to improved surround sensors are getting better at recognising
road traffic hazards.
DISTRONIC PLUS STEERING ASSIST, FOR LANE KEEPING AND BLIND
SPOT monitors the lane changes and active blindspots. Using the 2 stereo cameras
in the front and other cameras at the rear and side skirts, monitors for any
vehicle coming at the blind spots. If the car is turned regardless of the given
warning, then using an EPS SYSTEM, brakes are applied to the opposite wheels so
that the car is brought back to the lane causing no accidents or reducing the

Mercedes Benz S-Class is equipped with Pre-Safe Braking, Active Lane keeping
Assist, Active Blind spot Assist, DISTRONIC PLUS with steering assist, BAS
PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist and finally the best - MAGIC BODY CONTROL.
PRE-SAFE BRAKING assists the driver in the urgent situation when a pedestrian
or cyclist cross in front of the car accidently. The car has 2 stereo cameras in the front.
It scans the road using long medium and short range radars. When a interference is
noticed, it starts an autonomous braking, decelerating the vehicle to rest. The PRE_SAFE
braking is active from 50 kmph.
