How lucky are we?
Another Winning Team
We New England sports fans know the thrill and fun of victory. Four of
our major sports teams have won their respective championships in recent
years. If you are reading this newsletter, it’s likely that you have been even
more directly part of another winning team, South Shore Hospital.
For our Hospital, there’s no single winning moment to celebrate. These
Thomas J. McCarthy
moments happen again and again, day-in and day-out, living out our
mission of healing, caring and comforting. And that’s not just coming from
me as Hospital Foundation Chairman of the Board. Recently, two well known independent organizations
have weighed in. US News & World Report ranked us as a Top 10 hospital in the Boston region. Ours
was the only non-academic hospital on this prestigious list. Also, Fitch Ratings, a financial rating agency,
affirmed its A-rating for South Shore Hospital. This third-party vote of financial stability is a credit to our
Hospital’s leadership and fiscal responsibility.
You can also see our winning team’s latest progress for yourself when you drive past the hospital on Route
18 in Weymouth. Construction fences and work herald the start of our new inpatient expansion.
Construction began in late June and will conclude in 2012. When completed, this $44 million expansion
will add 60 new, private inpatient rooms to our Emerson Building, helping us meet the needs of the
growing numbers of people choosing South Shore Hospital for their care. How’s that for a grand slam?
We would not have achieved any of this without those who depend on us for care and supporters who
trust us with their philanthropic investments. Won’t you please consider remaining part of this winning
effort by making a donation, or giving again? It’s easy. You can use the envelope in this newsletter,
or go online at southshorehospital.org. You could also donate your time as a volunteer in programs as
mentioned on page two. Thank you for being on our team.
Can you remember what it was like for you and members of your family after the death of someone
you dearly loved? Perhaps you are still struggling with a loss, or maybe you’re further along on your
journey and can now reflect on life lessons you’ve learned.
Facing a loved one’s death can be one of the most difficult challenges ever. What gets many of
us through such tough times is having someone willing to patiently and respectfully support us.
Often that special friend or clergy person, family member or bereavement volunteer makes
all the difference.
If you are thinking about learning new ways to extend support to bereaved families in your
community, then you’re invited to join our dedicated team of bereavement volunteers at Hospice
of the South Shore. Evening workshops are being offered to prepare volunteers to make a positive
difference for families after their loved ones have passed.
We’ll meet at South Shore Hospital on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings in July, 6-9 pm, starting
July 12. The sessions will be facilitated by Rob Zucker, Coordinator of the Hospice Bereavement
Program. Rob has oriented thousands
of volunteers, counselors, clergy, school personnel, social workers, nurses, first responders and
psychologists throughout the United States and Canada. He is the author of The Journey Through
Grief and Loss: Helping Yourself and Your Child When Grief Is Shared (St. Martin’s Press, 2009).
The sessions are free and there is no obligation to become a volunteer. All that is asked is heartfelt
desire to learn more about grief and to learn strategies for helping those in need.
For more information or to pre-register, call Rob Zucker at (781) 794-7336. ■
Do Well By Doing Good...Tax
Benefits of Charitable Lead Trusts
Many community-minded people
use “charitable lead trusts”
to do good while also
realizing tax benefits. The
charitable lead trust is
a stand-alone trust
created for a specified
term. The trust then
makes annual
payments to a charity
or multiple charities
during the term. After
the term expires, the
remaining trust assets are
distributed to named
non – charitable beneficiaries
who are usually the donor’s family.
The charitable lead trust strategy is great for
anyone who wants their consistent, annual
giving to provide additional tax benefits. In the
right interest rate environment, like now, a
charitable lead trust can help accomplish one
of two additional tax objectives
for the donor:
• Reduce estate taxes
on the future transfer
of assets to the next
generation; or
• Reduce income
taxes in a year
of unusual spiked
income by
accelerating future
charitable giving
deductions into the year
in which you need the
deduction most.
South Shore Hospital is eager to
help supporters understand the benefits
of legacy giving to the donor and patient
care. If you would like more information about
charitable lead trusts please contact
A Happy Camper Renewed:
Tom Hannaford
Tom Hannaford was looking forward to another great season at Camp
Quinebarge. The New Hampshire summer camp (www.campquinebarge.com) is
nestled on 75 acres of woods and trails on the shores of Lake Kanasatka. Tom had
been a camper there in 1963 and had such fond memories that two decades later
he bought the camp. At first, his summers were spent hiking, canoeing, and
teaching campers the joys of nature along the shores of Squam Lake, but then a
nagging knee injury started to slow down his active lifestyle. For three years his
knee hurt so badly that he was confined to his camp office, and required the use
of a golf cart to get around. No more bike rides, horseback riding, or hiking.
“I couldn’t trust my knee,” says Tom. “What if I had to run? There was a serious
question about whether it would work or buckle underneath me.”
When the pain and immobility became too much to bear, Tom visited
Dr. Michael Ayers at South Shore Orthopedics and scheduled knee replacement
surgery. Dr. Ayers and his team performed the surgery at South Shore Hospital
in May, with Tom recovering at his Weymouth home four days later. For Tom,
there was never a question about where he would go for care. “I never felt any
great need to go into Boston. South Shore Hospital is close to home. I know the
doctors – they are as competent and up to speed on the latest technologies as
anyone anywhere,” said Tom.
Three weeks after the surgery, Tom’s knee feels fine, albeit a little stiff. The
exercises he learned from the nurses at the South Shore Visiting Nurse Association
(VNA) will help loosen it up. “They did a very nice job,” he says of VNA. “They
were very conscientious. They showed me exercises to do, and chided me if I
didn’t do them.”
What’s Tom looking forward to most this summer? “Being able to sneak up on
my staff,” he says with a grin. “You could hear me coming from a mile away with
that golf cart. This year I hope to be able to walk freely through the camp to
observe the staff and campers, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.”
To make a donation to support orthopedic or home care programs that help
patients like Tom please visit southshorehospital.org or call (781) 624-8600. ■
Doing something you love for a
good cause. Sounds like a
win-win, right? Although that’s
how the story ends, it didn’t start
that way for Marshfield resident
Nancy Pearce.
Always one to eat right, exercise
(especially her favorite fitness workout
Zumba) and go for regular health
checkups, 50-year-old Nancy was shocked
to learn that she had Stage II breast
cancer. It had spread to a lymph node.
With no family history of cancer and
a recent negative mammogram, she had
a hard time believing the terrible news.
“I was in shock,” explained Nancy. “I don’t
think of myself as someone who could have
cancer. It was always other people who got
sick, not me.”
Not only was I able
to avoid the drive into Boston,
I was able to receive highly-specialized
care that was tailored specifically for me.
This whole experience has turned into
something really positive for me, Not
only did I receive top-notch care,
but I was able to do something
I love, to help others.
Fortunately, Nancy was referred to the Breast Care Center at South Shore
Hospital – offering world-class cancer care center close to her home.
“Not only was I able to avoid the drive into Boston, I was able to receive
highly-specialized care that was tailored specifically for me,” Nancy explained.
Treatment for Nancy consisted of lumpectomy surgery to remove the cancerous
tumor and twelve weeks of chemotherapy followed by radiation therapy.
“I missed a few Zumba classes when I had the surgery, so when I finally did
go back and saw my instructor Chrissy, I explained why I had been out for
so long. She felt bad and wanted to know if there was anything she could do
to help me, like raise money to pay for a wig since I would lose all my hair
during chemotherapy.”
While Nancy’s health insurance covered most of the cost of a wig, she
explained to Chrissy that there were plenty of women whose insurance
would not cover that kind of cancer-treatment expense. It was then that the
two women decided they would host a Zumbathon fundraiser and donate
the proceeds to South Shore Hospital’s Ronnie Fund.
The Ronnie Fund, created by South Shore Hospital Cancer Center
Boutique Patient Services and Product Liaison Pamela Lepore in memory
of her late husband Ronnie Luccio, helps cancer patients whose health
insurance doesn’t pay for wigs and other cancer-related products. More than
200 people showed up to the Zumbathon, raising more than $3,200 for the
Ronnie Fund.
“This whole experience has turned into something really positive for me,”
Nancy explained. “Not only did I receive top-notch care, but I was able to
do something I love, to help others.”
If you would like to donate to the Ronnie Fund and the South Shore
