Notes from Commodore Ron McGuire
Summer Doldrums? Maybe, but not for the Boat Club.
We’re keeping busy with a great social program when
it’s too warm for some of us to go boating. Marilyn
Danielson and her committee did a fantastic job with a
full house 4 th of July party. Don Tanner and his committee
have a real bargain with the Summer Steak Picnic
(inside) on August 15. In September, the Italian Dinner
is coming up and even though it’s already sold out you
can get on the waiting list. And we continue to have
good crowds for the Business Meetings and Attitude
Adjustments.
There is still some boating taking place with the day
boats going every month and in September we start to
get back into cruising with a cruise to Legacy Harbor
lead by Bob Bridge. The boating schedule really picks
up as we get closer to fall.
Although it applies to all members, I’d like to encourage
our many new members to learn about the Captains’
Challenge. It’s all explained on our website, but briefly
it’s a program sponsored by the Boaters’ Alliance to encourage
all boaters to complete a safe boating course.
Our club was recognized last year for the high percentage
of members that had completed such a course. If
you’ve ever taken a course please register on the website
here. If not, please consider taking one soon.
You should already have received your dues statement
for 2010. You’ll notice that, in spite of rising costs, the
dues have remained the same. This makes the Boat
Club one the best bargains around. Your payment by
September 1 will be appreciated.
One more reminder. The Bloodmobile will be at the
clubhouse the day after the business meeting, Tuesday,
August 11. In the summer with so many people gone,
they really need blood. If you’re reasonably healthy,
please consider coming by. It only takes about 30 minutes
and they say it will save 3 lives.
Cutting Edge Race Schedule
The Boat Club’s cardboard boat, CUTTING EDGE, next
racing entries are:
September 5 (Saturday) 1000 at Indian Mound Park,
Englewood, FL. Sponsored by Englewood Jay Cees.
September 19 (Saturday) 1400 at Picnic Island Park,
Tampa, FL. Sponsored by the Tampa Power Squadron.
At 1200, there will be a picnic lunch with all the goodies.
The cost is $5.00/person, plus a covered dish to
pass. The Tampa Power Squadron needs an advance
count of how many will come to the picnic, so it will be
necessary for you to call Frank Hokenson 637-9318 by
September 9, if you plan on the picnic.
The race begins at 1400, and there is no cost to watch
the race. The Boat Club will have a group there, and it
will be a good time for all. This will be the last race of
the season, so don’t miss it.
Mark these dates on your calendar, as you won’t want to
miss these exciting events.
CUTTING EDGE, crewed by Ron Norvelle and Dennis
Kuzara, needs your cheers and support to win both of
these races.

Fisherman’s Village will be holding a celebration for National
Marina Day on Saturday, August 8 from 1000 -
1600. We have several volunteers that will be manning
our “booth”. If you have friends that are interested this is
great time to bring them by Fisherman’s, join in the celebration,
and introduce them to the membership opportunity
by talking to the volunteers.
We want to express our heartfelt Thank You to all the volunteers
who are giving up personal time on a weekend to
spread the word about what a great club we are. Thank
You!!!

take place on Saturday, September
19. The Boat Club will once
again meet in Ponce de Leon
Park at 0900. After the cleanup, the group will feast
on hot dogs and other goodies. Sign-up will take

Get Well cards were sent to Carl

Sympathy cards were sent to T.C. Beardsley on the loss of
his sister, Bill Barnett on the loss of Joan, and
Frank Hokenson on the loss of his mother.

Connie Leips, and Bill Hyatt.

Boating Events - Power & Sail
Fleet Captain of Power, Frank
Gwynn
Steve & Missie Elmquist led the cruise
to Palm Island Marina on June 9-11.
Seven boats and 16 members participated.
After cocktails by the pool, we had dinner at
Leverocks Restaurant. We were joined by the Hokensons,
the Polsons and the McGhees who drove up for dinner.
The next day we took the water taxi over to Palm
Island and had lunch at the Rum Bay Restaurant. After
lunch, some couples went to the beach and the rest came
back to the marina and hung out at the pool. That evening
Steve Elmquist grilled hamburgers and sausages for dinner
and the rest of the group provided side dishes. The
weather was great and everyone had a good time.
The July 8 Useppa Island lunch cruise was led by Mike
and Annie Miro. That day the weather did not cooperate;
there were strong winds blowing across Charlotte Harbor.
Some of the boaters cancelled but five boats did
cruise to Laishley Marina and 25 boaters had lunch at Lu
Lu’s Restaurant. Three boats did make it to Useppa Island
- the Kumms, the Drews and one of our new couples, Bill
and Ellen Even where they enjoyed lunch. This was the
first cruise the Evens made with the club and they were
awarded the club burgee at the July Business Meeting.
The lunch cruise to Cabbage Key, led by Ron and Jan
Norvelle, is scheduled for August 11. Please sign up on
line here or call Ron or Jan at 743-2472. There is usually
some time provided to do some exploring of this island
after lunch. The Skippers’ Meeting is Thursday, August 6
at 1600.
On September 16, Dave and Nancy Hetzel are leading the
lunch cruise to the Nav-a-Gator Restaurant. This is always
a fun cruise so sign up on line here or call Dave or
Nancy at 624-4323. The Skippers’ Meeting for this cruise
is Thursday, September 10 at 1600.
We have been able to reschedule the Legacy Harbor overnight
cruise which had been cancelled last May due to
poor weather. It is now scheduled for September 22 -24
and will be led by Bob and Diane Bridge. Bob has been
able to secure ten slips at a special rate of $1.25 per
foot. He is able to get more slips if we have more people
sign up. This is a beautiful marina in Ft. Myers with floating
docks which makes getting on and off your boat very
easy. There is a pool for your enjoyment and the marina
is within walking distance of the old town and many restaurants.

Fleet Captain Of Sail, Gary Leips
The breezes have died off and the heat is sweltering -
not the best sailing conditions.
The next sailboat race the Chowder Race on October
10. Dave Atkinson is race chairman. The next sail
cruise will be a combination of the Autumn Extravaganza
and the Key West Cruise. The cruise will be led
by Robert Moran.
Kayak Group
On Saturday, July 11, we had a nice paddle leaving
from Riverside Park. We had 13 paddlers, including
three who had just taken their first kayak lesson, as well
as two guests. Everyone did great, and we paddled for
five miles!
The next kayak planning meeting will be on Thursday,
August 6, at 1500. At that time, we will decide on the
date and place for our next paddle. Please contact Jan

about the kayak group.

Social Events
Social Director, Carolyn Potterton
The 4th of July party chaired by Marilyn Danielson was
a great success. About 125 members and guests enjoyed
member prepared appetizers before the spectacular
fireworks, finishing the evening with home made
brownies and ice cream.
The August 15 picnic, Steak on the Grill, chaired by
Don and Rozina Tanner, is being well received and reservations
are available. I have just been notified that
the Italian Dinner, chaired by Ralph Tommasino, is sold
out. They are putting folks on a waiting list. See further
details about these parties in this newsletter.
Bob and Sue Francus are chairing the Flag Raising and
Blessing of the Fleet. The date for this event is October
3; mark your calendar, plans are under way.
When we decided to clean the club, as always, we had
willing hands to help. Thanks to Dennis Kuzara and
Ralph Tomassino for doing some heavy duty cleaning
of the floor and removing the old baseboards. Mucho
thanks go to Candy Nering, Kathy Kuzara and Eunice
Robbins for cleaning the kitchen and main club room.
Extra thanks go to Candy Nering for helping me paint
the kitchen. We think the kitchen looks brighter and
cleaner. PLEASE HELP US KEEP IT CLEAN!

Blessing Of The Fleet, Flag Raising and
Remembrance Ceremony
Saturday – October 3
Traditionally, the opening of the boating season starts
with the Blessing of the Fleet and Flag Raising ceremonies.
Ours will be held on Saturday, October 3 at 1100
starting with Bloody Marys and Mimosas. A brunch
of scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns, croissants,
fruit, coffee and tea will be served at noon catered by
Skyview Café. The cost is $10.00 per person.

Italian Dinner
Saturday, September 12, 2009
Sold Out!!
The committee is hard at work to make
this year’s Italian Dinner even bigger
and better than those in the past.
It will start off with homemade Italian appetizers from six
o’clock until seven.
Dinner will start with Caesar Salad. We will be making
the dressing ourselves, not from a bottle. Anchovies will
be on the side for those enjoy them. The main course will
be chicken Brasciole. This is stuffed chicken breast
served with a tomato based tarragon sauce. It will be
accompanied by stuffed shells. Both items homemade by
the committee.
Red and white wine and soda will be served with the
appetizers and dinner.
Dessert will be tiramisu. For those of you who have not
eaten homemade tiramisu before, you will be totally
amazed; it is wonderful.

Because of the large amount of food preparation, we can
only accommodate 120 people. The reservations have
filled up and we are now putting names on a waiting list
in case of cancellations. To be placed on the waiting list

The cost is $15.00 per person. If you are on the waiting

Attitude Adjustment
