The Los Angeles County
Department of Mental Health
(LACDMH) is now recognized
as the only public agency in the
United States that integrates
mental health and spirituality and
that it has shown success in its
outreach to the faith communities
in the Los Angeles County. With this fame came an invitation
from the Virginia based American Association of Pastoral
Counselors (AAPC) to host a one-day training of faith leaders
to address the impact of substance use on individuals, families
and communities. This training is funded by the Substance
Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration Center for
Substance Abuse Treatment (SAMHSA - CSAT) for the
Clergy Education and Training Project® of the National
Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA). DMH
accepted the invitation and in turn invited the Department of
Public Health - Substance Abuse Prevention & Control
(DPH-SAPC) to co-host as well. Both DMH Director Dr.
Marvin Southard and SAPC Director Mr. John Viernes Jr.
agreed to collaborate. Several states have had this training; for
California, it will be held here in Los Angeles County on
Monday, September 10, 2012.
The training objectives are: (1) to raise awareness of how
addiction to alcohol and other drugs impacts individuals and
their families; (2) to discuss the role of clergy and
congregations in offering information, hope and recovery
support for individuals and family members affected by
alcohol and other drug abuse; (3) to review core competencies
for clergy and other congregational leaders and learn strategies
for implementation; and (4) to identify the next steps for
partnership among DMH, SAPC, and the faith communities in
effectively identifying and referral to screening, assessment,
and treatment of substance related problems.
