Thermomagnetic releases<br />
The <strong>Tmax</strong> T1, T2 and T3 circuit-breakers can be fitted with thermomagnetic releases and are<br />
used to protect alternating and direct current networks with an application range from 1A to<br />
250A. They allow protection against overloads with a thermal device (with adjustable threshold)<br />
made using the bimetal technique, and protection against short-circuit with a magnetic device<br />
(with fixed threshold).<br />
The four-pole circuit-breakers are always supplied with the neutral protected by the release<br />
and protection of the neutral at 100% of the phase setting for settings up to 100A. For higher<br />
settings, the version with protection of the neutral at 50% of the phase setting is available.<br />

<strong>Isomax</strong> Thermomagnetic Releases<br />
The thermomagnetic releases which equip the <strong>SACE</strong>S3 circuit-breakers have the thermal element with<br />
threshold adjustable from 0.7 ÷ 1 x In. The regulated current value which is obtained by using the appropriate<br />
selector must be intended as the rated value at 40ºC. The magnetic element has fixed trip threshold,<br />
with trip values which may vary according to the phase setting.<br />
The thermomagnetic releases which equip <strong>SACE</strong> S5 and S6 circuit-breakers have the thermal element with<br />

<strong>SACE</strong> <strong>Isomax</strong> S circuit-breakers for<br />
motor protection (protection against short-circuit)<br />
Three-phase asynchronous motor starting, switching and protection are essential operations for its correct use. The traditional system<br />
used for this purpose has three different devices: a circuit-breaker for protection against short-circuit, a thermal relay for protection<br />
against overload and lack of or unbalanced phase, and a counter for the motor operations. Everything must necessarily take into account<br />
the problems which arise on start-up.<br />
In particular, these different factors must be taken into account when selecting these devices, such as:<br />
- the motor power<br />
- the starting diagram<br />
- the type of motor: with cage rotor or with wound rotor<br />
- the fault current at the point of motor installation in the network<br />
ABB <strong>SACE</strong>proposes a wide range of circuit-breakers, which by implementing the protection against short-circuit exclusively, are suitable<br />
for use inside protected starters of traditional type.<br />
The new <strong>SACE</strong> T2 with fixed magnetic protection is an extremely compact circuit-breaker, which stands out for its exceptional performances<br />
in terms of breaking capacity and limitation of the specific let-through energy.<br />
It can be used in a vast range of start-ups, from 0.37kW to 37kW and from 400V-50kA up to 690V-50kA. <strong>SACE</strong> S3 N/H/L 160/250 circuit<br />
breakers and the S3X 125/200 current-limiting circuit-breaker are fitted with a magnetic only release adjustable from 4 to 12 time the rated<br />
service current. They cover coordinations from 37 to 132kW and allow optimal motor protection thanks to their great flexibility due to the<br />
wide setting range of the magnetic threshold.<br />
Finally, <strong>SACE</strong>S4 160/250, S5 400/630, S6 630/800, and S7 1250/1600, with different capacity levels, like the current-limiting S4X and<br />
S6X, can be fitted with the PR211/P (I) electronic microprocessor-based release. Above all, they are used for protection of high power<br />
motors and, thanks to adjustment of the protection against short-circuit from 1.5 to 12 times, allow the optimumtrip value to be selected<br />
for any motor type.<br />

Applications<br />
These current-limiting circuit-breakers are suitable for installation in all types of civil, industrial and service sector installations,<br />
as well as for electrical installations on board ships, in mines or on oil rigs, as well as, generally speaking, in any installations<br />
where high power generators and transformers make it possible for very high short-circuit currents of up to 200kA at<br />
380/415 V~, 180 kA at 440 V~ and 75 kA at 690 V~ to occur.<br />
The circuit-breakers can be positioned downstream of the power supply either to provide general protection (installations,<br />
multi-user systems and electrical lines) or for protecting electrical equipment (motors, generators, transformers and capacitors).<br />
They can also be fitted in systems where back-up protection is required that allows the use of circuit-breakers downstream<br />
which have a lower breaking capacity than the prospective short-circuit current in the point of installation.<br />
The breaking capacities of the <strong>SACE</strong> current-limiting circuit-breakers are higher than the best values achieved by other units<br />
of this type.<br />

Microprocessor-based overcurrent releases<br />
General specificications of the microprocessor-based releases include:<br />
• operation without the need for an external power supply<br />
• microprocessor technology (8-bit for <strong>SACE</strong> PR111 and 16-bit for <strong>SACE</strong> PR112 and PR113)<br />
• high precision<br />
• sensitivity to the true r.m.s. value of the current<br />
• interchangeability among all types of releases<br />
• setting for neutral normally 50% of setting phases, with possibility of setting it to 100% (on request<br />
only for circuit -breakers E1, E2, E3 standard and £4/f, E6/f full size versions).<br />
For the release PR113, it is also possible to select neutral protection at 150% and 200% of the rated<br />

Automatic circuit-breakers with full-size neutral conductor<br />
The <strong>Emax</strong> range of automatic circuit-breakers with full size neutral conductor is used in special applications<br />
where the presence of triple-N harmonics on individual phases may lead to a very high current<br />
on the neutral conductor.<br />
Typical applications include installations with loads having high harmonics distortions (computers and<br />
electronic devices in general), lighting systems with a large number of fluorescent lamps, systems with<br />
inverters and rectifiers, UPS, systems for adjusting the speed of electric motors.<br />
This range includes standard circuit-breakers with full-size neutral conductor in sizes E1, E2, E3.<br />
Models E4 and E6 are available in the “full size” version up to rated currents of 6300A. Models E4/f<br />
and E6/f are available in fixed and withdrawable four-pole versions. These models may be fitted with<br />
all accessories available of the <strong>Emax</strong> range; the exception, on the E6/f model, are the mechanical<br />
interlocks made using flexible wires and 15 external auxiliary contacts, which are therefore incompatible.<br />
All the models may be fitted with all available version of electronic protection relays, in the standard<br />

Switch-disconnectors<br />
The switch-disconnectors are derived from the corresponding automatic circuit-breakers, of which<br />
they maintain the overall dimensions and the possibility of mounting accessories.<br />
This version differs from the automatic circuit-breakers only in the absence of overcurrent releases.<br />
The circuit-breaker is available in both fixed and withdrawable versions, three-pole and four-pole. The<br />
switch-disconnectors, identified by the label “/MS”, may be used according to the category of use AC-<br />
23A (switching motor loads or other highly inductive loads) in accordance with the standard IEC<br />
60947-3. The electrical specifications of the switch-disconnectors are listed below.<br />
