Generali Group: Consolidated results at 31 

March 2011 

MILAN In May Generali Group’s Consolidated Results at 31 March 2011 were 

announced. Generali closed the first quarter of the year with strong growth in net profit to € 

616 million (+16.8%; € 527 million Q1 2010), driven in particular by operating profits in all three 

businesses: Life, Non-Life and asset management. 

Generali Group CEO Giovanni Perissinotto said: “The excellent results in the first quarter 

demonstrate once again the validity of our geographical and distribution diversification strategy. 

We have improved results in all segments. In the Life business our goal is to raise our already high 

profitability still further, through a tighter product policy. In Non-Life we are achieving our planned 

profitability increase. I’m also very satisfied with our results in asset management thanks to a favourable 

balance between growth and profitability. So everything is in place for the Group to report another 

significant improvement in its net profit in 2011.” 

Highlights of the 1 ST Q 2011 Results 

• Strong growth in net profit to € 616 million (+16.8%; € 527 million Q1 2010), driven 

in particular by operating profits in all three businesses: Life, Non-Life and asset 

management 

• Operating result rises to € 1,256 million (+6.6%) driven by result in Non-Life and 

Asset Management 

• Excellent performance confirmed for Life result at € 881 million (+1.7%), one of the 

best quarterly performances of recent years 

• Strong progress in Non-Life result at € 393 million (+26%) 

• Non-Life combined ratio improves by 1.9 p.p. to 96.1% (98% in Q1 2010) 

• Result in financial services improves to € 115 million (+16.7%) 

• Life premiums € 12.3 billion (-13.2%), performance reflects high concentration of 

single premium income in Q1 2010. Growth continues in Life annual premiums 

(+3.2%) 

• Non-Life premiums progress to € 6.8 billion (+2.1%) 

• Shareholders Equity rises to € 17.7 billion (+1.3%)

After the recent inclusion of Assicurazioni Generali in the FTSE4GOOD index, Generali Group 

confirms its solid commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility launching an in-house methodology 

for selecting socially responsible investments (SRI). 

Generali Investments, the company that oversees the Generali Group’s financial assets, has given 

the go-ahead to the introduction of a proprietary methodology for investment selection based 

on Socially Responsible Investing criteria (SRI). The cornerstone of the Generali methodology is 

S.A.R.A. (Sustainable Analysis of Responsible Asset), an internal database developed by a Generali 

Investments team of specialists dedicated to analysis of socially responsible investments (SRI) and 

environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria. 

Initially, the new method will be implemented in three funds (two Euro-denominated and one unitlinked) 

in the Generali France portfolio, with overall assets of € 6 billion. As a result Generali will be 

one of the main investors on the French SRI market, which was worth more than € 68 billion at the 

end of 2010. Over the next few years, Generali Investments will gradually extend the methodology to 

the Group. The database was used to conduct a non-financial assessment on the 465 companies 

in the MSCI Europe index, on the basis of 34 ESG criteria. The originality of the approach lies in the 

enhanced analysis of the environmental, social and governance risks in the investment process. 

The assessment led to the selection of 120 companies, which will form the Generali SRI portfolio in 

France.

Generali China Life Beijing Branch’s General Management and staff, in presence of, Shaanxi Branch 

General Management supported the Shanchegou Primary School Lantian County, Xi’an city, Shaanxi 

Province, donating school supplies and computers for students with financial difficulties. 

Generali China Life’s stress on the importance of social responsibility within the society in which it 

operates is not solely focused on the importance of education but also on teaching how a sustainable 

environment is intertwined to a healthy growth. This is why after the donation ceremony, the volunteers 

were involved in a tree planting activity in school’s playground.

Recently in the selection activity of the “Low-carbon List & Benevolent Company 2011”, Generali China 

Life Insurance Guangdong Branch was awarded the “Best performance in Low-carbon Responsibility 

Dissemination”. 

In collaboration with Guangzhou Daily and Research Center for Corporate Social Responsibility Chinese 

Academy of Social Sciences, the “Low-carbon List & Benevolent Company 2011” presented awards 

in 5 categories. It aims at encouraging the corporations with sustainable development and innovation in 

low carbon concept. 

The jury is consisted of the professionals from Chinese authorities, including the Chinese Academy 

of Social Sciences, the State Commission of Development and Reform, The Climate Group Greater 

China and the Chinese Society for Sustainable Development. During the selection process, the 

corporations are assessed in their environmental protection works according to 5 criteria: totality, 

tangibility, sociality, sustainability and creativity.

Gensport – Moto GP news: First podium with Ducati 

delights Rossi 

In the fourth round of the 2011 season, Moto Grand Prix action arrived to Le Mans in France on May 

15th. Valentino Rossi scored his best result of the season and earned his first Ducati podium. He 

finished third while Nicky Hayden placed himself seventh. 

The fifth race at the Gran Premio Aperol de Catalunya in Spain on June 5th, had mixed conditions. 

The warm-up session was wet, while the race was dry. In Ducati Team’s Valentino Rossi crossed the 

line in fifth place while Nicky Hayden finished eighth. 

The British Grand Prix at the Silverstone circuit played out under treacherous weather conditions on 

June 12th. Nicky Hayden set the fastest lap of the race and crossed the line in fourth. Valentino Rossi 

finished sixth.

Did you know that Generali is celebrating Italy’s 

150th year anniversary in Rome contributing to the 

exhibition “Regions and Witnesses of Italy”? 

The year 2011 represents an important anniversary for Italy: the country is celebrating its 150th year 

since the foundation of the Kingdom of Italy back in 1861. One of the numerous events celebrating 

the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification, is the exhibition “Regions and Witnesses of Italy”. The 

“Art and Regions”, Italian artwork from 1861 to nowadays, is part of this major exhibition hosted in 

Italy’s national monument, "Altare della Patria" (Altar of the Fatherland) in the capital city, Rome, until 

July 3rd. This exhibition celebrates the variety and uniqueness of the 21 regions in which Italy is 

administratively divided. Their diversity is the heritage of the different past lived by each of them. The 

regions showcase not only their exceptional historical, cultural, technological and industrial heritage, 

but also the new identity developed during the course of one and half century. 

Generali, founded exactly 30 years prior to the Italian Unification, is present with a significant 

contribution. In an exhibition space that testifies the company’s development and progress since 

1831. The exhibition is an opportunity to recount the contribution and historical path of the Triestebased 

Company in 150 years of Italian history. It thus bears witness to how, throughout its 

development, Assicurazioni Generali has successfully established its prestigious position in the 

international insurance and financial industries.

participated in the all-night celebrations for Unification “Notte tricolore” on 16 March, illuminating the 

façade of its Rome main offices in Piazza Venezia with the three colours of the Italian flag and the logo 

of the Lion of Trieste
