Celebrating Intel® Teachers – Western Cape
On September 30 th 2008 teachers from the Western Cape who had excelled in the Intel
Teach Essentials programme were invited to celebrate their achievements at the Cape
Academy of Maths Science and Technology.
Teachers enjoyed the hospitality provided by Intel for the evening. The event proved to be
an opportunity for sharing ideas and experiences related to the Intel® Teach programme.
The Western Cape Education Department had had the foresight to allocate funding to allow
teachers to be trained during 2008 in the Intel® Teach programme. These teachers had
been selected for training at two centres in the Western Cape, Kuils River and Worcester.
They had attended mid week 5 day courses in their subject groups and with their curriculum
advisers. Intel® Teach Essential training courses have been part of a special project being
implemented by the Centre for E-Innovation for the first time during 2008; planning is
underway to expand upon this programme for 2009. The Intel Corporation has been very
pleased that this provincial government department has been prepared to adopt the
programme and to allocate funding of the
training which Intel has been covering since
2003.
The evening’s programme started with an
address by Parthy Chetty from the Intel
Corporation who showed two videos; the first
one was about the Intel® World Ahead
Programme and the second one was produced
by SchoolNet and outlined the impact of Intel
Teach in South Africa.

During the evening there was a
presentation made by Gerald Roos, who
is the educational ICT specialist
responsible for the localisation of the
Intel® Teach programme in South Africa.
Gerald spoke about how Intel Teach
Essentials aligns to the South African e-
Education White Paper and particularly
how it achieves the higher level
competences as set out in the national
policy Guidelines for Teacher Training and
Professional Development for ICT. Sarietjie Musgrave of Eunice Girls High assisted Gerald by
demonstrating how the projects they had devised during Intel® Teach training had worked in
the classroom. Discussion of the most valuable components like Educator support, Learner
Sample, Project Planning formed part of this presentation.
Those present had the pleasure of listening to a short address by Mike Chiles who is the
Director for e-Learning and Library Services at the Western Cape Department of Education.
Past achievements and future planning for e-Education in the Western Cape Department of
Education was clearly outlined with much reference to the e-Education White Paper and
national planning for ICT in education. Andre Weise assisted Mike to deliver his speech;
Andre is the Deputy Director: ICT Training at the Department Of The Premier responsible for
the Centre for e-Innovation.

Teachers had been invited to attend this awards event because they had produced
portfolios of work that were of a sufficiently high standard to warrant commendation and
acknowledgement from their provincial department of education.
