Welcome to our final pre-Olympic edition
From the High Performance Department
Our Eventers and Dressage horses have arrived safely in
Hong Kong and have settled in well. We look forward to
the arrival of the Jumping horses and to have the team all
together.
We are proud and excited about our 2008 Olympic Team
and are ready to give it all we’ve got.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and
give credit to our reserve riders. It is a difficult position to
be on the bench and we thank them for their support,
sportsmanship, and their skills as riders. To be a reserve
in this team is a huge accomplishment.
Thank you.
Saturday saw the opening of the Hong Kong Olympic
Village (HKV) along with the arrival of the first horses. The
Australian Team was one of the first to be checked into the
Olympic Village with Russ Withers, the Deputy Chef de
Mission with the responsibility for the sub-site of
Equestrian and Sailing, and myself as Section Manager
and Team Leader forming the advance party to prepare for
the arrival of the team on 30 and 31 July.
Athletes rooms – photo Russ Withers
The team has been allocated 19 beds within the HKV with
all the athletes and half of the team officials, with the
remainder and the reserve athletes being accommodated
nearby in the Regal Riverside Hotel. Security, like any
Olympic Village is tight, but I must say the security people
are very friendly and courteous which makes the constant
checking more bearable.
Those countries which have a noticeable presence at the
venue and in the HKV are the Spanish, always
resplendent in the red and yellow, the Germans and the
Dutch, who have all decided to arrive earlier rather than
later, unlike the Australians, British and the US who will
arrive later.
Saturday was spent setting up the Australian Team
Headquarters on the 16 th floor of the HKV and one floor
above where the Australian riders and officials will stay.
Today, Sunday, was a trip down to the competition venue
and a check of the shuttle service which are always
notoriously 'scratchy' early on but usually work themselves
as time goes on. It is not perfect yet but there are still a
few days until our team arrives and by then, we are
confident all will be working well.
The Australian and New Zealand stable block – Photo Russ
Withers
Once at the venue we checked out our stable block which
was the same as we had for the test event, which we will
share the Kiwis (probably still smarting from the loss to the
Wallabies in the Bledisloe Cup on the weekend).
As has been reported previously, the stable complex is
first class and to help offset the limited room, additional air
conditioned tack rooms/offices have been put in at the end
of each stable block.
Our container and its contents arrived safe and sound and
tomorrow we will commence the task of preparing the
stables for the horses' arrival, followed by the delivery of
3,000kg of team uniform and nutritional product from the
Australian Team Headquarters in Beijing.
There are no surprises with the weather, today being quite
hot followed by an afternoon thunderstorm. The forecast
for the next few days is rain and unlike Sydney, it will be
hot!
Our Olympic horses arrive in Hong Kong
Pallets going into plane
The majority of the Australian Olympic horses have arrived
in Hong Kong and are now in the Olympic Stables near
Sha Tin Race Course.
Eventing Team horses (All Luck, Irish Jester and
Ringwould Jaguar) flew out of Sydney airport at 8am on 30
July accompanied by Shane Rose, Sam Lyle and Denis
Goulding. Megan, Sonja, Wayne and the grooms were on
another flight which arrived at approximately the same
time in HKG.
The other two members of the Eventing Team (Headley
Britannia and Ben Along Time) and the Dressage Team
horses (Quando-Quando, Greenoaks Dundee and
Relampago do Retiro plus reserve horse Donna Carrera)
also arrived in Hong Kong yesterday, flying in from the
United Kingdom and Amsterdam.
Do these come in XL?
The Jumping Team horses (Itot du Chateau, Ashleigh
Drossel Dan, Leconte 6, Kolora Stud Genoa and reserve
Vivant) will be flying from Holland to Hong Kong on 06
August as their event is later in the program.
“The horses travelled well and have settled in nicely,” said
Brett Mace, Olympic Equestrian Team Section Manager.
“The air-conditioned stable compound and the adjacent
training areas are magnificent and will help reduce the
process of acclimatisation.”
Eventers’ farewell at SIEC
On Saturday 19, at the completion of the 4-star hitout
competition, the EFA gave an informal send off to our Ausbased
Eventing Team members. Geoff Sinclair hosted the
evening and the riders answered lots of questions about
their campaign and preparations for HGK. Thanks to the
riders for signing close to 100 posters each for their fans –
(I am still getting request for posters!)
It was great to hear them speak and share in some of their
experiences.
DRESSAGE
The long-running duel between
multiple gold medallists Isabell
Werth of Germany and
Dutchwoman Anky van Grunsven
will provide the focus for the
Dressage .
Van Grunsven, who won the
individual gold in 2000 and 2004,
will be riding Salinero. This is the
same Dutch team that took home
team gold at the 2007 European
Championships in Turin, Italy.
She has been a top competitor
for Holland for several years now, despite 2 years ago
being accused and cleared of allegations of using 'rollkur',
a controversial training method that makes horses hyperbend
their necks. This will be van Grunsven's sixth
Olympics. She's already brought home six medals that
include gold. Expect her to win another Medal for Holland.
Anky will ride against Isabell Werth from Germany, a fourtime
individual and team gold medallist.
Germany has held the Olympic team title since winning at
the 1984 Games. Werth, 39, won silver in 2000 - van
Grunsven won silver in 1996. In a foretaste of what to
expect in Hong Kong, the two went head to head at the
FEI World Cup Dressage final in the Netherlands in March.
In a contest decided only on the final ride, Van Grunsven
clinched victory over Werth.
Japan's Hiroshi Hoketsu, who is in his late sixties, has also
switched to dressage after competing in show jumping at
the 1964 Tokyo Games.
EVENTING
What the yanks think about our Eventers…..
Capt. Mark Phillips (US Eventing Coach) -
“Australia is probably the favorite with Lucinda Fredericks
and her Burghley and Badminton winner Headley Britannia
and her husband Clayton on his World Games horse Ben
Along Time who took the silver medal just ahead of Amy
Tryon and Poggio. Shane Rose was third at Burghley two
years ago and the other two, Sonja Johnson and Megan
Jones have both won three-day events in Australia. When
there is no room for Matt Ryan and Andrew Hoy, Australia
must have a strong hand.”
Amy Tryon and Poggio II (IIyo Thoroughbred)
A very good team headed by Phillip who is always a
medal favourite. Connaught won Kentucky CCI4* in 2008
and was 2 nd in 2007.
Amy Tryon has plenty of international experience on
Poggio II although no really special results in 2008.
Heidi White-Carty won the Norwood CIC3*-W this year
and in 2007 was 4 th at Lexington CCI 4* and finished
second in 2006.. A very good horse who has been around
plenty of 4-star tracks including Badminton, and on his
day could be hard to beat, weakest phase is the show
jumping)
Becky Holder was 2 nd at Kentucky CCI4* this year and in
2007 won 2 CIC3*s.
Gina Miles was 15 th at Badminton in 2007 and 3 rd at the
Pan Am Games in Rio (CH3*). They have wo 4 CIC3*over
the past 2 years, one of which was a CIC3*-W. At Barbury
Castle CIC3* in June they finished 22 nd .
Sharon Hunt and Tankers Town (12yo 16.1hh gelding)
Mary King and Call Again Cavalier (16yo 16.2hh gelding)
William Fox-Pitt and Parkmore Ed
This is a very good team. William Fox-Pitt and Parkmore
Ed are 2007 CCI 4* Burghley champions. Parkmore Ed is
in very good form finishing 2 nd to Lucinda Fredericks at
Barbury Castle CIC 3* in June and has been in the top
four at three World Cup Qualifiers in 2008.
Mary King is just so experienced and such a great
competitor, in 2008 Call Again Cavalier was 3 rd at
Burnham Market CIC3*-W and 8 th at Barbury Castle.
CIC3*. In 2007 they won Chatsworth CIC3*-W and
Gatcombe CIC3*-W and were second at Pratoni CH3*
Kristina Cook and Miners Frolick won the Gatcombe
CIC3* (UK) in 2007 and were 2 nd at Blenheim CCI3* (UK)
and 3 rd at Boekelo CCI3*(NED). In 2008 she has been 6 th
Sharon Hunt and Tankers Town were 5 th at Badminton
2008 and 6 th at Belton CIC3*. They were also 6 th at
Daisy Dick is probably the least in form of the Poms.
They have a 7 th at Pratoni CH3* in 2007. They were 14 th
at Barbury Castle CIC3* this year and also completed
Badminton.
Frank Ostholt and Mr. Medicott
The Germans are a threat but the absent Bettina Hoy is a
significant blow to them. In 2008 Peter Thompsen and
The Ghost of Hamish was 7 th at Luhmuhlen CCI3* (GER)
and 5 th at Malmo CIC3* (SWE). In 2007 he was 10 th at
Badminton CCI4* (UK).
Frank Ostholt and Mr. Medicott finished 3 rd this at Aachen
CICO3* and 6 th at Luhmuhlen CIC3* this year but this
horse is green at this level.
Hinrich Romeike and Marius Voigt-Logistik were 5 th at
Aachen CICO3* and 3 rd at Luhmuhlen CIC3* in 2008. He
was 6 th at Badminton in 2007. In 2006 he was 5 th at
Aachen CH4* and 7 th at Lumuhlen CCI4* so has some
good 4* performances.
Andreas Dibowski and Euroridings Butts Leon finished
6 th at Lumhuhlen CCI4* in 2006. They have had 2 top 5
placings at CIC3* competitions this year.
Ingrid Klimke and FRH Butts Abraxxas finished 2 nd in the
CIC 3* at Luhmuhlen CIC3* this year. They were 10 th at
the European Championships last year.
In July this year they were 18 th at the Aachen CICO3*.
Mark Todd and Gandalf
Andrew Nicholson and Lord Killinghurst
Caroline Powell and Lenamore
Joe Meyer and Snip
Heelan Tompkins and Sugoi.
You would be a fool to under-estimate the Rider of the
Century, Mark Todd. He is a legend. He is riding a good
horse, and they came 6 th at Saumur CCI3* this year under
a lot of pressure. The partnership is new and Mark will still
be getting his groove back so I doubt we’ve seen all his
cards on this horse just yet. However, by Olympic
standards this horse is green. He has only completed one
CCI 3* (as far as I can see) and he was not spectacular at
Barbury Castle in June, finishing 48 th .
Andrew Nicholson and Lord Killinghurst have some 4*
performances. In 2007 they were 4 th at Burghley and 5 th
at Badminton and they were 3 rd at Gatcombe CIC3*. More
recently they were 2 nd at the CIC3*-W at Tattersalls (IRL)
in May 2008.
Caroline Powell and Lenamore were 4th at Badminton
this year. In 2007 they were 2 nd at Gatcombe CIC3* and
12 th at Badminton. They finished 26 th at WEG in 2006.
Joe Meyer and Snip have had two top ten finishes at
Badminton. They were 7 th in 2007 and 10 th in 2006. In
2007 they were also 2 nd at Barocca d’Alva (POR) CIC3*.
In 2008 they were 3 rd at Chatsworth CIC3* and 38 th at
Barbury Castle CIC3*. They finished at 51 st at WEG 2006.
Heelan has only been on this horse since 2007 and
finished 3 rd a Takapau CIC3* (NZL) and 2 nd at Richfields
CCI3* (NZL) in 2007.
This year they won the Kihikihi CIC3*-W (NZL) but did not
complete the Chatswrth CIC-W (UK).
Individually Nicolas Touzaint and Galan de Sauvagère
are serious gold medal contenders - this is the man of the
moment.
Galan de Sauvagère is the current European Champion
and also won the World Cup Final in 2006. In 2007 he
won Fontainebleu CIC3*-W and Pratoni CCI3*. Nicolas
also won Badminton this year (on another horse).
Didier Dhennin and Ismène du Temple were 6 th at
Luhmuhlen CCI4* this year and have two 6 th places at
CCI3* once in 2006 and once in 2007.
In 2007 Jean-Renaud Adde and Haston d'Elpegère were
10 th at the Pau CCI4*and 8 th at Blenheim CCI3*. No FEI
Irish Horses favoured by Eventers…..
From Horsetalk.co.nz
Four of the five riders picked for Britain's Olympic Three
Day Event team will be riding Irish-bred horses at the
games. The British team is favoured to pick up a medal at
the games, in Hong Kong next month.
Irish horses will also feature on teams from as far away as
the USA, New Zealand, Australia, China and even
Jamaica.
Horse Sport Ireland says that "Irish-bred event horses are
officially the best in the world and riders express a
preference for the unique combination of intelligence,
athleticism and stamina they offer, and Olympic selectors
have now validated this with their choice for the games."
The horses Britain has chosen are Spring Along (ridden by
Daisy Dick), Parkmore Ed (ridden by William Fox Pitt),
Tankers Town (ridden by Sharon Hunt) and Call Again
Cavalier (ridden by Mary King).
Spring Along was bred by Patrick McDonnell of Nenagh in
Co. Tipperary, while Sean Aylward of Mullinivat , Co.
Kilkenny was the breeder of Parkmore Ed. Tankerstown is
from Co. Laois, where it was bred by Mary Blundell, and
Call Again Cavalier was bred by Noel Walsh of Co.
Carlow.
The Irish Eventing team will also use four Irish-bred horses
- Kilkishen, Lorgaine, Watership Down, and Fernhill Clover
Mist, and New Zealand's Caroline Powell has been
selected for the Olympics on the Irish-bred Lenamore (Sea
Crest x Karinella). He is owned by Caroline Powell, and
Lexi and Jane Mackinnon.
Ludger Beerbaum of Germany is likely to be involved in
the fight for medals again as will his sister-in-law Meredith
Michaels-Beerbaum, the rankings leader who was born in
Los Angeles and competes for Germany.
John and Michael Whitaker, brothers who won a team
silver at the Lo s Angeles Games in 1984, are regarded as
Britain's best chance of a gold medal.
Look for Ian Millar to be carrying the flag for Canada in
Beijing. This will be 'Captain Canada's ' 9th Olympic
