Buckley Moss’s Afton Chapel scene By Kathy Johnson After more than 100 years, and in spite of a small congregation, the little chapel on the side of the mountain just beyond the post office at Afton continues with services each Sunday. On August 1, 1899, a deed transferred “a piece of land lying near Afton on the south side of the Old Turnpike Road containing one-half acre more or less.” The deed was between J. R. and Margaret E. Goodloe, who owned the property, and the trustees of the Afton Baptist Sunday School (J. B. Lane, R. D. White and J. H. Goodlow). The deed gave the Baptist denomination the right to erect a building on the site to be used as a Baptist Sunday School. Though it was deeded to the Baptist group, it was not established exclusively for Baptists. The deed authorized the Baptist denomination to have the “right to use said building for preaching or other religious services two Sundays in each month and other Protestant denominations will have the right to use it the two remaining Sundays of each month.” And for the past 109 years that agreement has held. Bill Keith, Afton resident and trustee at the church has been trustee “since 1955 or ’56,” he said. A quiet and modest-appearing man, Keith was waiting patiently on a recent Sunday for the congregation to arrive. “sometimes we have five,” he said, “Sometimes 15. It varies. It’s a mix of ages. We don’t have a Sunday school right now, but if we get a few more children we will.” Longtime Afton resident June Curry used to attend regularly before it became too physically difficult for her to get there. “At one time when people came to church they might take up two pews—Father and Mother and all the children,” she said. And Curry remembers when the owner of the Afton Inn used to lend the church the pond at the inn for baptisms during the summer months. “Back then,” Curry said, “That was the only church close enough that people who didn’t have cars could go to. We can help. Call little church was full every Sunday.” Not so these days—but Keith has hopes. “The people who come come from all over— Afton, Waynesboro, Raphine. All over,” Keith said in a quiet voice. And pastors from a variety of denominations still offer services. “Jimmy Garwood is Methodist,” said Keith. “Bob Nelson says he’s not Baptist, but he’s close enough. Lloyd Fitzgerald is Pentecostal.” The Chapel’s website explains, “Different ministers from the local communities preach and lead the worship. The singing is Southern Gospel, Bluegrass, traditional hymnody, and some Christian praise. Guitars, autoharps, harmonicas and a piano provide the heartfelt music.” In the past, primarily because of dwindling membership, there have been some financial difficulties and some talk that the church would have to close. Mountfair Vineyards’ 2006 “Wooloomooloo” Petit Verdot Chris Yordy and Fritz Repich blend was awarded a gold medal and the 2006 “Belated” Merlot blend and “Inaugural” Cabernet Franc blend won silver medals. “What excites me most is the recognition we have received for all the wines we have produced. It speaks to our consistency in quality,” remarked Chris Yordy, Mountfair Vineyards’ managing partner. The 27th Annual Governor’s Cup Wine Competition was judged by a prestigious panel of nationally recognized wine experts. A panel of approximately 44 judges evaluated over 250 entries from 46 Virginia wineries. After a full day of tasting and deliberation, the judges awarded 22 gold medals, 45 silver medals and 64 bronze medals. Mountfair Vineyards is located on Fox Mountain Road in Mountfair, north of White Hall.
