Credit Union Robbed at Gunpoint
A young white man of medium
height and weight, flashing a small
handgun in his left hand, robbed
the Crozet branch of the U.Va.
Community Credit Union in the
Clover Lawn shops on Rt. 250
March 13 at about 10:20 a.m. On
entering, the robber demanded
money, then jumped through the
teller window in front of Susan
Miller, took an undisclosed amount
and ran away west down the parking
lot behind the adjoining block
of businesses.
Albemarle County Police immediately
announced a description of
the suspect and released photos
from the security cameras. Teller
Betty Raines, branch manager Alan
Shenk and a customer witnessed the
robbery. They told police the suspect
was wearing a grey hooded
sweat shirt, with a white T-shirt protruding
from the bottom of the
sweat shirt, tan or khaki trousers,
white tennis shoes and a blue bandanna
with white spots over his
face.
No one was caught and two
weeks later Police Lt. Todd
Hopwood said the case is still being
investigated. Anyone having information
related to robbery should
contact the police at 296-5807 or
Crime Stoppers at: 977-4000.
Miller came back to her spot.
“You gotta get back up on the
horse,” she said. Her retirement date
is coming up soon and it’s looking
even better now.
Credit Union superiors, citing
the police investigation, told the
employees not to describe what happened
for the Gazette. Meanwhile
they work on as normal, but they
remember the day clearly.
The bank robbery was the first in
town memory in at least 20 years.
The former First Virginia branch in
the Crozet Shopping Center, now a
BB&T branch, was robbed about
25 years ago when a man presented
a threatening note to tellers there.
He was later caught. The old porticoed
Virginia National Bank,
destroyed in 1980 to make way for
what is now Bank of America, had
its night deposit box broken into on
FIRST ANNUAL SPRINGTIME BAZAAR
a Sunday night about 35 years ago
and the many church and store
deposits were stolen. That robbery
was never solved.
Crime Mapping
Albemarle citizens can now get
Google maps of local crime reports
and see what might have been
reported in their vicinity. The
department’s new online service
uses CrimeReports.com, a mapping
and analysis service, available to the
County for free, from Public
Engines, Inc., in Salt Lake City,
Utah. A link to crimereports.com is
also at the bottom of the police
department’s homepage.
Police hope to use the service to
alert residents to nearby crime, to
relay traffic information and to get
public help in solving crimes. Not
all types of crimes, such as those
involving sex or juveniles, are
reported on the service. For the widest
report, select “Show All” on the
site’s mainpage. ACPD data is
posted at 5 a.m. every morning.
