Thank you for the wonderful Sabbatical Sendoff that you gave
to Jane and me on Sunday night. Your presence,
encouragement, and prayers were greatly appreciated. Our
leave has now begun, so this will be the last newsletter article
that I will write for a few weeks. As our Sabbatical Journey
begins, I ask the following:
‣ Pray – Please remember our family as we travel.
You can follow our trip by going to the Season of
Renewal section of the church web site at
www.fbchsv.org. We covet your prayers and we will
be praying for you as we are away.
‣ Support – We have a wonderful church staff that will
be picking up some extra responsibilities during my
absence. Offer your support and encouragement for
them during these weeks. I am already grateful for
what they will be doing while I am away.
‣ Welcome – I know that you will offer warm hospitality
to all of our guest preachers. Look at the insert in the
newsletter this week to learn more about these
preachers. These are some of my favorite folks. I
have told them about how great you are, and I look
forward to my friends from out of town getting to
know my church family here in Huntsville. Enjoy
offering a warm welcome to them.
‣ Worship – We have planned a Season of Renewal
with wonderful guest preachers. However, as Larry
Moore pointed out on Sunday night, renewal does
not happen just by inviting some good speakers. It
happens in each heart. I hope that you will be a full
participant in these worship and learning
experiences.
With deep gratitude . . . and with hopeful expectancy, we say
so long – for now. See you in August as we begin what will be
a very significant year for our church!
Volunteers Needed for the Medical and Dental
Clinic at the Downtown Rescue Mission
You will recall that our church, under the leadership of
Dr. Jerry Graham, Charlene Graham, and Herb Batt, held
a clinic at the mission during Thanksgiving. This will be
offered again during the memorial weekend on Saturday,
May 24 from 8-4, Sunday, May 25 from 1-4, and Monday,
May 26 from 8-4. We will need four more nurse
assistants, two people to help with the reception area,
and four in witnessing and talking to clients.
If you can help with any of these times please call Herb
Batt at 651-7074

Billy Orton, Minister of Music and Worship
Dear Friends,
The Youth Choir Mission trip to California is just
around the corner! Your spiritual, physical and financial support has meant so
much. Please continue to hold this endeavor in your prayers.
The large group of students (which has even grown in recent weeks!) has been hard
at work preparing for the various worship presentations which the trip will entail,
including one at Camp Pendleton which promises to be a highlight of the year for
our youth as they touch the lives of soldiers who will soon be on the battlefields
around the world. Our students will also lead services in several churches in the
Los Angeles area, presenting choral music, instrumental music and drama with
excellence and creativity. Additionally, the group will work in several “rescue
missions”, putting hands and feet to their Christian message as they assist with and
support the ministries to the truly needy.
FBC is blessed with wonderful students (and their families) who are willing to extend
themselves and the ministry of our church in significant fashion. We ask for your
prayerful support during these remaining days of preparation, travel and mission.
Jamie Mackey and Billy Orton
Music Ministry Staffing Updates…..
FBC welcomes Michael Moore as interim organist, Lisa Belk as interim rehearsal
accompanist (with occasional assistance from Cindy Boyd) and Suzanne Hefner as
interim children’s choir coordinator. We are grateful for these church members who
have agreed to help provide leadership in our Music Ministry during these interim
days, and we offer prayerful support not only to them but also to the search
committees in place for these staff positions.
We are also grateful for Lee Deutschendorf, our ministry intern, who has become
the music and worship coordinator for First Fellowship. Lee is providing leadership
for both adult praise bands as well as the youth band.
“STITCHES IN TIME” QUILT PROJECT
would be helpful. Please consider this unique way to play a part in
this historic event in the life of First Baptist Church.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely,
and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,
A WORD OF GRATITUDE
David W. Hull
We all need seasons for renewal. The Bible builds this concept into the rhythm of life with the
commandment to keep the Sabbath. Jesus often went “up the mountain” to get away from the crush of the
crowds. There he was able to renew his spirit for the work that remained in the valley. If we never take
time to “sharpen the saw” then we end up with dull lives and empty hearts.
I am grateful that our church has a sabbatical policy which comes from this need for renewal. Each of our
ministers receives some time to be away after years of service to the church. My time has now come for a
season of renewal. After thirty years in ministry, this will be my first extended time away from the routine
responsibilities of ministry in the church. I probably will not know how to act. I do need to learn — for
the time away will be a blessing and will make me a better minister.
Not only I am grateful for a church that provides time away, but I am most appreciative of the Lilly
Endowment Clergy Renewal Program. Designed to fund sabbatical experiences by ministers, this program
is a vast resource to help pastors and churches experience what they never could do without the help of
additional funding. I am honored that our church is one of 120 that were awarded a sabbatical grant this
year. Funds have been provided that will allow me to study and travel. In addition, funds are provided to
bring excellent speakers to our church during my absence so that the entire congregation can have a time
of renewal. All of this will occur without a financial cost to the church.
My sabbatical will extend from May 19 until August 9. A few days of rest with family in North Carolina
and an anniversary visit to a former pastorate in South Carolina will allow us to rest up for a trip to
Europe. Jane, Emily, and Andrew will accompany me on this sabbatical journey. In fact, my grant
application was written with the concept of retracing the steps of my first sabbatical. When I was seven
years old, my family lived in Germany while my Dad was on a sabbatical leave. I have never returned to
Europe. Now I will take my family to some of the same places that I experienced as a boy.
Our journey begins in Oxford as I study Baptist history in the library of Regents Park College. From there
we move to Hungary where we visit missionary friends Glen and Clista Adkins. Two weeks will be spent
on the campus of the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Prague, where I will continue my study
of Baptist history. We then move to Germany and visit the places I remember as a boy. Our journey will
end in northern Italy with some days in the Tuscany area before we return home.
My studies in Baptist history will prepare me for our Bicentennial Celebration in 2009. During my absence
you will have wonderful opportunities for a similar preparation of your minds and hearts. The month of
June will provide excellent speakers who will help us to understand the heritage of our faith. Through
preaching on Sunday mornings and teaching later that afternoon, you will have a better understanding of
our family tree as Baptists. The month of July will help us to focus on the future. These preacher/teachers
will challenge us to think about new ways of ministry in the years to come.
The month of June will be people who have been my teachers. The month of July will be people who are
my peers and colleagues. I commend each one to you and encourage you to enter into a Season of Renewal
as I do the same. We all will have opportunities for rich blessings in the summer of 2008!
A SEASON OF RENEWAL
The summer of 2008 is set aside as a special Season of Renewal for the First Baptist Church
What is Your Play Teaching?
The way a family handles the truth is important. Although some teasing may involve
misrepresenting the truth and can be an acceptable part of play, it’s important to ask some
serious questions about where that play is leading. If you’re having a problem with lying in
your family you may want to cut out even playful teasing in this area to help children see
the issues more clearly.
One mom told us, “We have a problem with lying in our family. As I began developing a
plan to deal with it, I noticed that the way we play often encourages deception. If my fouryear-old
comes into the kitchen to ask, ‘What’s for dinner?’ I might jokingly reply, ‘Frog
Soup.’ Our family fun is not necessarily bad as we play small tricks and tease each other,
but I’m seeing now that we need to take a break from those kinds of activities for a while. It
may be that our fun is inadvertently encouraging our children to be dishonest.”
This mom is wrestling with an important issue. Sometimes the things you do or say aren’t
bad in and of themselves, but you may need to make adjustments because of the
particular needs of your family.
