I was struck with <strong>the</strong> same dark lustre in<br />

<strong>the</strong> eyes <strong>of</strong> Maximin, when I first saw him,<br />

that I had observed in Melanie. <strong>The</strong>y remind<br />

me <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> tropical climates. His<br />

eyes are prominent, his brows well. marked,<br />

but somewhat depressed at <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> arch.<br />

.His forehead is clear, his general appearance<br />

is frank, and he prepossesses me favourably.<br />

His manner is free and easy, but still rust,ic.<br />

He answers readily when questioned, but his<br />

hands are restlessly employed about his knees.<br />

His voice has an independent drawl in it, aud<br />

he has not an atom <strong>of</strong> mere human respect in<br />

his composition. All reports agree that he<br />

has made but a very poor way in learning;<br />

for he is both slow <strong>of</strong> mind, heedless, and<br />

volatile.<br />

CHAPTER V.<br />

THE APPARITION.<br />

THE 19th <strong>of</strong> Septeml~er, 1846, fell on a<br />

Saturday. It was also <strong>the</strong> eve <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Festival<br />

<strong>of</strong> our <strong>La</strong>dy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Seven Dolours. Maximin<br />

and Melanie, conducting <strong>the</strong>ir cows, came<br />

down toge<strong>the</strong>r from <strong>the</strong> mountain <strong>of</strong> <strong>La</strong><br />

<strong>Salette</strong> upon <strong>the</strong> level, or terrace, called Sousles<br />

Bawses. <strong>The</strong> day was serene, <strong>the</strong> sky<br />

cloudless, <strong>the</strong> sun shone brilliantly. It wus<br />

ahout mid-d~y, for <strong>the</strong>y heard <strong>the</strong> distant<br />

sound <strong>of</strong>' <strong>the</strong> Angelus bell. <strong>The</strong>y took <strong>the</strong>ir
