Yet <strong>the</strong> colours. <strong>the</strong>y say, are like no earthly<br />

colours, for all is so brilliant, and yet one<br />

thing is described as far more brilliant than<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r. Thus, <strong>the</strong> pearls which covered <strong>the</strong><br />

robe were very brilliant. <strong>The</strong> sleeves were<br />

deep, and covered <strong>the</strong> hands, and were crossed<br />

over beneath <strong>the</strong> breast, so as partly to cover<br />

<strong>the</strong> crucifix. <strong>The</strong> cross was "yellow but<br />

bright ;" <strong>the</strong> figure <strong>of</strong> our Lord upon it was also<br />

'' yellow, but far more bright." <strong>La</strong>tely when<br />

<strong>the</strong> Superior <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>La</strong> Snlette was<br />

preparing a statue representing <strong>the</strong> Apparition<br />

for <strong>the</strong> church, he went, as he told<br />

and hammer were plnced on <strong>the</strong> arms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

cross beyond <strong>the</strong> nailed hands. When told ,<br />

'<br />

answered at once, but " <strong>the</strong>re sere blue roses,<br />

and roses <strong>of</strong> all colours." Yet <strong>the</strong>y declare<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y were not roses, <strong>the</strong>y were so bright.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re were none round <strong>the</strong> lower part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

dress, as sometimes pictured, but only mund<br />

<strong>the</strong> feet. <strong>The</strong> apron descended newly, but<br />

not quite. down to <strong>the</strong> length <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> robe.<br />

Melanie speaks <strong>of</strong> spangles covering this apron,<br />

but when spangles were produced, she said,<br />

" <strong>the</strong>y are not like <strong>the</strong>se, <strong>the</strong>se are not bril-<br />

. liant, <strong>the</strong>se are poor." <strong>The</strong> greatest difEcnlty<br />

'<br />

h~s been to'obtain a correct description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

head-dress. <strong>The</strong>y use <strong>the</strong> word cap, and even<br />

point to caps as worn by pilgrims from one <strong>of</strong><br />
